1.Short-term Observation of Histological Changes on the Rabbit Retina after Endocryopexy.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the histopathologic changes of the pigmented rabbit ratina after endocryopexy. We investigated the differences or similarity among endocryopexy, transscleral cryopexy and laser phocoagulation. Their ultrastructural changes were observed with light and electron microscope. The results were as follows; 1. The first day after endocryopexy, we observed rupture of the internal limiting membrane, breakdown the inner and outer retina, separation of intercellular gap junction of pigment epithelial cells, and accumulation of exudation within subretinal space. 2. In the 8th days, there are mull iplication of retinal pigment epithelial cell layer and development of basal infolding. 3. The present study suggested that effects of endocryopexy on the retina to cause chorioretinal adhesion was similar to transscleral cryopexy or laser photocoagulation However it should be operated on the premise that in requires technical skill for the purpose of clinical application.

2.Full-Field and Focal Macular Electroretinography in Normal Subjects using MacADIOS 411 and Maculoscope.

Specific values for amplitude and implicit time may differ among laboratory due to normal variations in recording electrodes, equipment, and protocol. We presented the results of fulHield and focal macular electroretinography in normal subjects using MacADIOS 411 and Maculoscope. Full-field electroretinograms were obtained in 87 normal subjects (65 males, 22 females) and focal macular electroretinograms were recorded in 33 valunteers(18 males, 15 females) under controlled condition. Age-matched norms were given in table, and for the purpose of clinical application, range of values was given for each group.

3.Expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene as a Wrapping Material for Porous Polyethylene Orbital Implant.

PURPOSE: To investigate the possibility of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) as a wrapping material for porous polyethylene orbital implant. METHODS: Two groups of 6 female New Zealand albino rabbits underwent enucleation with placement of a 12 mm porous polyethylene orbital implant wrapped in simple e-PTFE in one group (group 1) and macro-porous e-PTFE in the other group (group 2). Histopathologic sections of the implants obtained at 4, 6, 8 weeks were compared on the extent of fibrovascular ingrowth, percentage of the area of proliferated vessel, and grade of fibrosis between the two groups. RESULTS: There was no implant exposure or severe inflammation in group 1 and 2 during the observation. The extent of fibrovascular ingrowth differs only at 4 weeks. Group 1 showed less fibrovascular ingrowth (until outer 1/3) at anterior half compared with posterior one, but there was no difference between anterior and posterior half in group 2 (until middle 1/3). The percentage of the area of the proliferated vessels was higher in group 2 than group 1 at both anterior and posterior half, and the anterior/posterior ratio of the area of vessels was also higher in group 2 than group 1. The grade of fibrosis was higher in group 2 than group 1 at 4, 6, and 8 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: Macro-porous e-PTFE almost didn't disturb fibrovascular ingrowth into the orbital implant, so macro-porous e-PTFE can be used safely as a wrapping material for porous polyethylene orbital implant.

4.Comparison of Voice Outcomes between Medialization Thyroplasty and Arytenoid Adduction with or without Injection Laryngoplasty in Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis Patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In unilateral vocal fold paralysis (VFP), medialization thyroplasty (MT), arytenoid adduction (AA) and injection layrngoplasty (IL) are the most common procedures to correct phonatory problems. There is no consensus that which procedure is superior to the other for correcting the glottal insufficiency. The purpose of this study was to compare the phonatory parameters between MT, AA and AA with IL (AA+IL) in patients with unilateral VFP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled patients from 2005 to 2016. Total 72 patients (49 male, 23 female, mean age 54.5 years) were classified into three groups ; MT (n=28), AA (n=12), and AA+IL (n=32). GRBAS scales, maximum phonation time (MPT), jitter, shimmer, noise to harmonic ratio (NHR), and voice handicap index (VHI)-10 and VHI-30 were preoperatively and postoperatively collected and compared between the three groups. RESULTS: Age, gender and cause of VFP were not significantly different between the three groups. In MT and AA groups, MPT, VHI, G (overall grade) and B (breathiness) were significantly improved. In AA+IL group, jitter, shimmer, NHR, MPT, VHI, G and B were significantly improved. In analysis of differences (pre-postoperative values), Δ jitter (p < 0.001), Δ shimmer (p=0.031), and Δ NHR (p=0.002) were significantly different and AA+IL group showed the greatest improvement. CONCLUSION: Analysis of voice parameters showed that all the three procedures for patients with unilateral VFP are effective in the improvement of voice ; especially in MPT, VHI-10, G and B scales. Compared to the others, AA+IL provided the better acoustic values including jitter, shimmer and NHR.

5.Early Injection Laryngoplasty With a Long-Lasting Material in Patients With Potentially Recoverable Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis

OBJECTIVES: Injection laryngoplasty (IL) is one of the major options for treatment of unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP). Early IL in patients with abrupt-onset UVFP can reduce hoarseness and aspiration-related discomfort and complications. Temporary or short-lasting materials are recommended for the early IL since permanent or long-lasting materials may negatively affect the voice quality when vocal fold motion is spontaneously recovered. METHODS: Patients who received IL with a long-lasting material (ArteSense) within 1 month following development of postoperative UVFP were enrolled for this study. They were categorized into a spontaneously recovered group (n=30) and unrecovered group (n=276) from UVFP. The subjective and objective voice parameters were collected before and 6 months after IL. Patients' demographics and collected voice parameters were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Age and sex distributions were not different between the two groups. Aspiration symptom, maximum phonation time (MPT), jitter, shimmer, noise to harmonic ratio (NHR), overall grade (G) and breathiness (B) of GRBAS (grade of dysphonia, roughness, breathiness, asthenia, strain) scale score, and voice handicap index (VHI) were significantly improved after IL in both groups. The amounts of improvement in MPT, jitter, shimmer, NHR and VHI were significantly greater in the recovered group. There was no IL-related complication including granuloma formation, hypersensitivity to injection material, or worsening of hoarseness. CONCLUSION: Early IL with a long-lasting material can be safely performed to improve voice quality and to reduce aspiration episode for the patients with postoperative UVFP, regardless of recovery from the paralysis. The amounts of improvement in the subjective and objective voice parameters were significantly greater in patients who showed spontaneous recovery from UVFP when compared with those in patients who did not.

6.Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy Versus Elective Neck Dissection: Long-Term Oncologic Outcomes in Clinically Node-Negative Tongue Cancer

Objectives:
. The aim of this study was to compare the long-term oncologic outcomes of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) versus elective neck dissection (END) in clinically node-negative (cN0) tongue cancer.
Methods:
. This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with cN0 tongue cancer from a single institution, including 91 patients in the SLNB group and 120 patients in the END group.
Results:
. The overall recurrence rate showed no significant difference between the two groups. The regional control rate was also comparable between the two groups (P=0.490). The 5-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) was slightly better in the SLNB group than in the END group (P=0.427). The 5-year overall survival (OS) rate was 89.9% in the SLNB group versus 91.9% in the END group (P=0.737). In a propensity-matched subgroup analysis, the type of neck management did not affect RFS or OS.
Conclusion
. SLNB showed non-inferior oncologic outcomes compared to END in patients with cN0 tongue squamous cell carcinoma.
7.Synthetic Cannabinoid-Induced Immunosuppression Augments Cerebellar Dysfunction in Tetanus-Toxin Treated Mice.

Synthetic cannabinoids are one of most abused new psychoactive substances. The recreational use of abused drug has aroused serious concerns about the consequences of these drugs on infection. However, the effects of synthetic cannabinoid on resistance to tetanus toxin are not fully understood yet. In the present study, we aimed to determine if the administration of synthetic cannabinoids increase the susceptibility to tetanus toxin-induced motor behavioral deficit and functional changes in cerebellar neurons in mice. Furthermore, we measured T lymphocytes marker levels, such as CD8 and CD4 which against tetanus toxin. JWH-210 administration decreased expression levels of T cell activators including cluster of differentiation (CD) 3ε, CD3γ, CD74p31, and CD74p41. In addition, we demonstrated that JWH-210 induced motor impairment and decrement of vesicle-associated membrane proteins 2 levels in the cerebellum of mice treated with tetanus toxin. Furthermore, cerebellar glutamatergic neuronal homeostasis was hampered by JWH-210 administration, as evidenced by increased glutamate concentration levels in the cerebellum. These results suggest that JWH-210 may increase the vulnerability to tetanus toxin via the regulation of immune function.

8.The First Meeting of the National Control Laboratories for Vaccines and Biologicals in the Western Pacific in 2016.

The first meeting of the National Control Laboratories for Vaccines and Biologicals in the Western Pacific Region was held on September 1–2, 2016 in Seoul, the Republic of Korea. The meeting objectives were to share results of current research and to promote collaboration between the National Control Laboratories. To this end, we first discussed each country’s current status of research on quality control of biologicals. Next, we reviewed quality control of snake venom and antivenom production and the progress of a collaborative study on the Korean reference standard candidate for snake venom. We also discussed the establishment of the second regional reference standard antivenom and the characterization of the Vero cell genome landscape and its application to quality control. Moreover, we also reflected on the importance of collaboration among interested parties participating in this meeting. In conclusion, the meeting initiated networking between the national control laboratories in the Western Pacific region and paved the way to continue collaboration, which will eventually improve the region’s capacity for quality control of biologicals.
