Tuberous sclerosis is a rare hereditary anomaly of variable penetrance characterized by mental retardation, epilepsy, and adenoma sebaceum. Pulmonary involvement is uncommon, but, when involve by tuberous sclerosis, it shows characteristic reticulonodular infiltration and cystic changes. Lymphangioleiomyomatosis is a rare disease of unknown cause that affects women of reproductive age. It is characterized by progressive proliferation of smooth muscle in the lung. We experienced one case of pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis associated with tuberous sclerosis in a 26-year-old female patient. This case is reported with a brief of the literature.

5.The Epidemiologic Characteristics of Drowning in Korea.

PURPOSE: In spite of preventive measures and excellent prognosis with immediate treatments, drowning and drowning- related injuries remain as one of the leading causes of accidental death in Korea. However, abundant statistical data for drowning has yet to be collected. Thus, this study aimed to describe the epidemiologic characteristics of drowning in terms of demographic characteristics, geopolitical factors and socio-economic status. METHODS: This study was conducted with drowning patients who either visited hospitals or died between January 2001 and December 2003. Of these patients, we enrolled individuals registered for such coverages as automobile insurance, national health service and work injury insurance and we reviewed death records reported to the Korea National Statistical office. NISS (New Injury Severity Scale) and EMR-ISS (the Excessive Mortality Ratio -adjusted Injury Severity Score) values were calculated for each patients and the results were classified 4-into four different severity groups. After analysis, we drew conclusions in terms of year, gender, age, region, insurance type, daily rate of incidences and severity. RESULTS: The incidences of drowning-related injury were 2,486 in 2001, 2,364 in 2002, and 2,595 in 2003 (average of 2,482). The average annual death were 1,954. Victims were more likely to be male and especially high incidence rates were found for two groups: (1) Children aged 5-9 years, (2) Adults aged 40 and older. Seoul and Gyeonggi had the largest total numbers of injury cases, while JeJu had the highest per capita incidence rate (106 per 1,000,000 population). The seasonal distribution of incidence rates showed that predictably, incidents were most frequent between the beginning of July and September. CONCLUSION: The average number of incidents was 55.73 per 1,000,000 population, which constitutes approximately 0.02% of all injuries. Based on this data, we recommand continuing studies and further evaluations in order to develop specific measures to combat drowning.

We report a case of trichoblastic fibroma involving the scrotum in a 60-year-old man. Trichoblastic fibroma is very rare and benign trichogenic tumor that has both epithelial and mesenchymal components and histologically recount the embryologic development of the hair follicle. The diagnosis was confirmed by histopathologic examination.

9.A case of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma presented only as unilateral pleural effusion.

We experienced a case of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma presented only as right side pleural effusion, that is primary effusion lymphoma (PEL), in a 75 year-old male patient in Korea where is the endemic area of tuberculosis. He visited our hospital complaining of exertional dyspnea. He did not have B symptoms. The breathing sound was decreased on the right side chest, but we could not find external lymphadenopathy or hepatosplenomegaly on physical examination. Simple chest radiograph showed right side pleural effusion. The cells of pleural fluid were lymphocyte-predominant and the pH, protein, lactate dehydrogenase, adenosine deaminase of the fluid was 7.31, 38 g/L, 381 U/L, 31 U/L, respectively. The biopsy specimen of the parietal pleura was diagnosed as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of small lymphocytic type. Computed tomograph of the chest, abdomen and pelvis, and the biopsy of bone marrow were negative for disease. We tried up to 3 cycles of chemotherapy with adriamycin, vincristine, cyclophosphamide and prednisolone and there was a marked decrease in the amount of the pleural effusion.

10.Analysis for Effects of Hearing Aids Performance by Applicability of Hydrophobic Nano-Coating Technique: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although popular as a method for aural rehabilitation with hearing impairment, hearing aids are susceptible to inflow of foreign materials such as water, sweat, and dust, causing corrosion of the circuit board and eventual device failure. Performance of hearing aids is evaluated by assessing the applicability of hydrophobic nano-coating technique using waterproof hearing aids electronic devices. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: Performance was evaluated using a Fonix 7000 for the maximum output sound pressure level (Max OSPL 90), high frequency average full on gain (HFA FOG), total harmonic distortion and input noise level for 13 hearing aids. Nine of the 13 hearing aids were tested after nano-coating was applied to 2.5 µm of thickness. Fro the immersion test, hearing aids were subjected to 1 m of depth of water and performance was immediately measured; they were also measured after a day and also after a month. RESULTS: In the coated group, Max OSPL 90, HFA FOG were significantly reduced but the corrosion of the circuit board was not observed. The four hearing aids without nano-coating failed to work immediately after the immersion test. However, there were no changes in performance after a month of immersion in any of the aids. For the non-coated group, corrosion of the circuit board was observed after 1 month. CONCLUSION: Nano-coating is a competitive technology and an advangtage to have to ensure waterproof effect and corrosion prevention. Thus it should be recognized as essential technology to enhance performance of hearing aids.
