While advancements in microsurgical technique and suture material have led to meticulous wound closure in cataract surgery, excessive postoperative corneal astigmatism may delay visual recovery and compromise the ultimate optical outcome. Greater efforts to prevent and control surgically induced astigmatism have been made recently since the introduction and popularized use of intraocular lenses. Control of astigmatism has been attempted with intraoperative variations in the size, location, and type of incision, the selection of suture material, attention to suture depth and technique, the use of preplaced sutures to facilitate wound closure, and most recently, the application of surgical keratometers. We reviewed follow up records to evaluate and compare the influences on corneal astigmatism after extracapsular cataract extraction(ECCE) with intraocular lens implant in 100 cases of polyglactin 9l0(vicryl) group and 50 cases of polydioxanone (PDS) group, and results were as follows; 1. In planned ECCE group, mean corneal refractive power changes was -0.14D +/- 0.47 in vicryI group and -0.17D +/- 0.78 in PDS group, there was no significant correlation between two. In phacoemulsification(KPE) group, mean corneal refractive power changes was 0.05D +/- 0.49 in vicryl group and 0.27D +/- 0.82 in PDS group. There was no significant correlation between two. 2. In total group, mean corneal refractive power changes was 0.02D +/- 0.48 in vicryl group and 0.08D +/- 0.74 in PDS group. There was no significant correlation between two groups. 3. Mean power of cylindrical lens for correction of astigmatism was -0.76D +/- 0.98 in vicry I group and -0.67D +/- 0.71 in PDS group, there was no significant correlation between two.

A 40 year-old female was admitted to our hospital because of proptosis for 4 years. Detecting a 2 cm-sized retrobulber mass on computerized tomography, we extracted well capsulated reddish brown mass, which confirmed as a cavernous hemangioma by histologic examination. One year postoperatively, her proptosis was gone, visual acuity was normal, and ocular motility was good.

PURPOSE: After delivery, eating brown seaweed soup is a typical Korean tranditional habit. But, excessive intake of iodine transiently inhibits biosynthesis and secretion of thyroid hormones if a certain threshold of iodine is reached in the serum. The aim of our study was to demonstrate whether the observed the elevations of TSH level in the breast fed neonatal infants was caused by mother's eating brown seaweed soup or not. METHODS: We performed neonatal TSH test by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(FRELISA Screenig TSH) and cheked TSH level for 178 newborns with a appropriate gestational age. We divided the study subject into 3 groups, the group used breast feeding, mother had taken brown seaweed soup and blood sampled at 6th day after birth was categorized Group A, formular feeding, blood sampled at the 4th days after birth was categorized Group B, breast feeding and had taken brown seaweed soup and blood sampled at the 19th day after birth was categorized Group C. RESULTS: 1) The mean TSH level was 1.5+/-1.3 uU/ml in Group A, 3.3+/-2.5uU/ml in Group B, 1.7+/-l.3uU/ml in Group C(Group A vs Group B: p<0.05, Group A vs Group C: p<0.05). 2) There was no statistical significances between the TSH levels and the amount of brown seaweed soup which mother had one day, the duration which mother had brown seaweed soup and duration of breast feeding. CONCLUSIONS: Mother had taken brown seaweed soup about 3 times a day in korea at present days, There was no significant changes of TSH levels in the beast fed newborn infants after the korean mother had taken brown seaweed soup.

10.Diagnosis of Idiopathic Inflammatory Pseudotumor of the Orbit.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1991;32(2):134-142
For an accurate diagnosis we analyzed 15 cases of clinically suspected idiopathic inflammatory pseudotumor(pseudotumor). The patients were 11 men and 4 women(mean age, 45.9 years). They were followed up for an average of 22 months. The final diagnosis was drawn collectively with clinical symptoms and signs, orbital computed tomography(CT), pathologic finding, and response to corticosteroids. In most instances the pathologic reading was reactive lymphoid hyperplasia(RLH). The final diagnosis was not constantly correlated with the pathologic reading; 5 were pseudotumor,6 RLH, and 4 undetermined. It could be concluded that the pseudotumor in the case which presented acute in flammatory symptoms and sings, involved the entire orbit in CT scan, or was cured by corticosteroid therapy. In the cases of no significant inflammatory sings it was difficult to differentiate pseudotumor from RLH with CT scan, pathologic finding, or response to corticosteroids. Although CT-guided fine needle biopsy often provides an insufficient specimen for pathologic diagnosis, it seems a useful diagnostic method, which is a simple and noninvasive technoque. At least the other orbital tumors or granulomatous lesions could be excluded by CT-guided fine needle biopsy.
