Augmented reality is popular in various fields, and the importance of this technology has been increasing. Its medical application has also been widely studied. Particularly, augmented reality can be a more promising technique of a surgery which requires great precision. This paper introduces an overview of augmented reality and reviews the recent applications in medicine. After describing the basic concepts, brief characteristics of the three components that comprise augmented reality are provided. Various applications implemented in the authors' laboratory are reviewed.

3.Horizontal Ratio of the Korean University Student's Face and Facial Golden Mask.

PURPOSE: Many attempts have been made to describe ideal facial proportions for over two thousands year and constantly lasted till now. Dr. Marquardt has derived supposedly ideal facial proportions from the facial golden mask using golden ratio of 1:1.618. On the other hand, facial reducing surgeries such as mandible angle reduction are popularized in Asia because the width of mid and lower face of Korean is recognized to be wider. The purpose is to analyze characters of Korean university students' faces in horizontal plane and establish the objective data for facial width distributions and clinical applications. METHODS: We applied the facial golden mask to the photographs in 1000 cases, compared the width of mid and lower face between the facial golden mask and Korean university students' faces. And we first calculated the horizontal ratio(HR) of middle and lower face each for using comparative scale of width, facial golden mask. We divided 1,000 cases into 3 groups by degrees of HR and analyzed data of HR on each groups. Using calculated horizontal ratio, we newly invented the cumulative frequency of distribution graphs in Korean university students' faces. RESULTS: Mean data of HR were over 1.0 in all groups, which means that Korean university students' faces are typically wider than facial golden mask in horizontal planes. And this study was statistically significant(p- value<0.05). Clinically using the cumulative frequency distributions of Korean university students' face width, we can easily explain changes of facial width to patient after facial reducing surgery and describe the changes into objective data. CONCLUSION: This study concludes thatKorean university students' faces are wider than facial golden mask is significantly true and the cumulative frequency of distribution graphs are expected to be widely used for comparison of results in facial reducing surgery.

5.Vitamin D Levels in Children and Adolescents with Antiepileptic Drug Treatment.

PURPOSE: This study was to evaluate the relationship of 25(OH)D3 levels with anticonvulsant use and other possible factors in epileptic children and adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 143 patients with epilepsy (90 boys, 53 girls; 11.21+/-4.49 years), who had been treated with anticonvulsants for more than 1 year. Patients who had taken multiple vitamins before the blood test and those who have the limitation of physical activity (wheelchair-bound) were excluded from the study. We evaluated the difference in vitamin D status according to the type and number of anticonvulsants taken and other factors such as gender, age, intelligence and seizure variables. RESULTS: For patients with mental retardation or developmental delay, 25(OH)D3 levels were lower than the levels in patients with normal intelligence quotient levels (p=0.03). 25(OH)D3 levels were lower in patients who had taken anticonvulsants for more than 2 years as compared to those who had taken them for less than 2 years (p=0.03). Those taking oxcarbazepine had significantly lower vitamin D levels than patients taking valproic acid (p=0.01). However, no effects of number of anticonvulsants taken were detectable. More than two-thirds of the patients were diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis in patients showing either vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency. CONCLUSION: The possibility of vitamin D deficiency can be considered in pediatric patients taking anticonvulsants if they have mental retardation or developmental delay or if they have been taking anticonvulsants for more than 2 years or taking hepatic enzyme inducing drugs.

6.The Influence of Fibronectin and/or RGDS Tetrapeptide on Osteopontin Expression in Cultures of Rat Calvarial Osteoblasts.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of fibronectin (FN) and/or RGDS tetrapeptide on osteoblastic proliferation and osteopontin expression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Osteoblasts were cultured on tissue culture polystyrene (TCPS) and apatite-wallastonite glass ceramics (AW-GC) with or without FN and RGDS synthetic tetrapeptide. Osteoblastic proliferation and differentiation were measured after cultivation, by determining the number of attached cells, by [3H]-thymidine assay, and by measuring the activity of alkaline phosphatase. The expression of osteopontin (OPN) was determined by RT-PCR and western blotting. RESULTS: Cellular proliferation was more increased by FN than the other variables examined (P<0.03). OPN mRNA expression by RT-PCR was induced two-fold, 24-hour after FN treatment (P<0.05). The expression of OPN by western blotting showed a five-fold increase in cells treated with FN compared with the controls. The synthetic RGDS peptides partially blocked the growth of cells induced by FN (P<0.05). RGDS tetrapeptide alone increased the OPN expression induced by cultured osteoblasts (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: FN enhanced osteoblastic proliferation on glass ceramics and induced OPN expression. Integrin occupancy by RGD-containing molecules may play a role in the process of osteoblastic proliferation rather than in osteoblastic differentiation.

9.Increased copper content in hair mineral assay of anorexia nervosa patients: 3 cases.

Anorexia nervosa is a kind of dietary disorder which causes amenorhea, weight loss, behavioral changes, and its hormonal status is typical hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism. The patients with anorexia nervosa showed many hormonal and chemical abonormal findings, like decresed follicular stimulating hormone, decreased lutealizing hormone and estrogen, increased cortisol, hypokalemia, hypercarotenemia. But tissue mineral contents of anorexia nervosa were not reported. We experience the typical increase of tissue copper contents in three anorexia nervosa patients in recent days, so report them with reviews of literatures.

10.The disease pattern and relation factor of second generation of the Korean paraquat intoxication patients in vietnam war.

BACKGROUND: This is the studies about "If the soldiers expose in the paraquat, how much have it influenced on themselves who participated in the Vietnam War and their second generation?" and this is also researched about the factors that "How differents do the symptoms according to their health conditions and a class of diseases?". First of all, We divided them into 3 groups as exposure duration and exposure degree of the paraquat and We gave marks against each steps, too. (< point 10: low group, point 11-19: middle group, > point 20: high group). We've focused in "Does the high score really involves with their descendants who suffers from paraquat?" as direct damages men during from June 1965 to February 1971 (72 persons) and their descendants (266 persons) who are in the Pusan veterans hospital and outpatients. METHODS: It is completed by direct interview, telephone interview, army records, army history, and medical records with them. We've tried to minify sample bias as analyzing their information. We could contact only a few people among living in Pusan or Kyongnam province. Generally, someone including persons who couldn't get a damaging proofs from paraquat hardly joined us and the others strongly rejected the interview for this research. RESULTS: Among the 72 participating soldiers in the Vietnam war, average age of patient is 53 years old (the youngest: 46 years old, the oldest: 64 years old), average of exposure score is 16 point (minimum: 1.9 point, maximum: 31.9 point), average of pregnant frequency is 5.2 persons, and average degree of smoking is 14.382 single cigarette (minimum: 4 single cigarette, maximum: 60 single cigarette). The second generation is suffering from abortion, skin disorder, still birth, congenital anomalies, weakness, visual disturbance, peripheral neuropathy in frequency. CONCLUSION: There's no relation between exposure score of paraquat and diseases of the descendants.
