Ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis has developed rapidly since it first emerged in the 1980s, becoming an almost indispensable tool in anthropological and archaeological sciences. Abstract
Introduction: Live surgery demonstrations have been widely used in surgical education. However, they cannot be used to demonstrate trauma surgery due to the emergency situation and lack of informed consent. The aim of this study was to conduct a live demonstration of trauma surgery with a porcine model to increase educational opportunities in trauma surgery.
Methods: Live demonstration was conducted at the Center for Development of Advanced Medical Technology (CDAMtec) , Jichi Medical University, Japan. An experienced trauma surgeon instructed three trainees during a live demonstration using pre-planned injuries in a porcine model. A six-point Likert Scale was used on a written survey to determine the value of the program to the viewers. Free-form written comments were also obtained from the participants. Live images of the surgical field were transmitted to a lecture room by a closed wireless LAN with interactive bidirectional audio capability.
Results: Eighty-three participants viewed this live demonstration and completed the questionnaire. Participants were highly satisfied with the live demonstration (mean survey scores: 4.6-5.1/6) , and gave very positive feedback concerning the educational value of this program. Nine free-form comments were submitted, which revealed that the participants felt they could acquire concrete skills for trauma surgery.
Discussion: Live demonstrations for trauma surgery using a porcine model are a feasible and effective educational tool to demonstrate technical procedures and non-technical skills, with possible added advantages regarding the ethical considerations of performing a live surgery demonstration.

Although research conducted in East Asia has uncovered parasite eggs from ancient toilets or cesspits, data accumulated to date needs to be supplemented by more archaeoparasitological studies. We examined a total of 21 soil samples from a toilet-like structure at the Hwajisan site, a Baekje-period royal villa, in present-day Korea. At least 4 species of helminth eggs, i.e., Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides, Clonorchis sinensis, and Trichuris sp. (or Trichuris vulpis) were detected in 3 sediment samples of the structure that was likely a toilet used by Baekje nobles. The eggs of T. trichiura were found in all 3 samples (no. 1, 4, and 5); and A. lumbricoides eggs were detected in 2 samples (no. 4 and 5). C. sinensis and T. vulpis-like eggs were found in no. 5 sample. From the findings of this study, we can suppose that the soil-transmitted helminths were prevalent in ancient Korean people, including the nobles of Baekje Kingdom during the 5th to 7th century.

We conducted a fact­finding survey about the difficulties of handling the telephone consultations at a Kampo medicine outpatient clinic. We extracted the details of consultations that could not be handled by an outpatient nurse alone from the descriptive data of the telephone responses described by the nurses in the sur­vey. We, then, identified the factors that were involved in the difficulties encountered in these consultations, and countermeasures were established and implemented. One year later, we compared and examined the status of telephone consultations between before and after the fact-­finding survey. We classified the telephone con­sultations that were difficult for the outpatient nurses to handle alone into four categories : (1) consultation about a physical disorder, (2) questions about prescribed Kampo medicines, (3) reports and questions based on the patient's own judgment, and (4) questions about treatment and hospitalization. Some of the questions about Kampo medicines included the continued use of the medicine and drug interactions, and the main topics of the survey's nurse self-­judgment reports were dose reductions and changes in Kampo medicine regimens. As a re­sult of the introduction of guidelines prepared by the nurses together with physicians at the clinics, the outpa­tient nurses became able to handle telephone consultations about frequently asked questions (FAQs). At 1 year after the survey, the number of cases of difficulties in handling telephone consultations decreased to less than half the original value, and no telephone consultations were made within 1 week after the patients' first visits to the outpatient clinic.
