1.A NEW SPECIES OF SIMULIUM (NEVERMANNIA) FROM THE OGASAWARA (BONIN) ISLANDS, JAPAN (DIPTERA: SIMULIIDAE)

Simulium (Nevermannia) satakei sp. nov. is described on the basis of the pupa and mature larvae collected from the Ogasawara (Bonin) Islands in Japan. This new species, tentatively (due to lack of the adult stage) assigned to the vernum species-group of the subgenus Nevermannia, is characterized in the pupa by four gill filaments lacking transverse ridges, and in the larva by a small, M-shaped postgenal cleft, antenna without hyaline bands, and simple rectal papilla. The morphological differences among this new species and the two known species, S. (N.) uemotoi from Japan and S. (N.) karzhantacum from Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, are noted. This is the second species of the family Simuliidae from the Islands.

4.Usefulness of JapanSCORE—Comparative Study of the Usefulness of the JapanSCORE and the Logistic EuroSCORE

Risk analysis models are becoming more important in various aspects of the clinical setting. We have used the logistic EuroSCORE as a risk analysis model, but there is divergence between the model and actual clinical reality in our country. The Japan Score is a risk model based on the Japan Adult Cardiovascular Surgery Database and it is considered to be better reflect from Japanese clinical results. We compared the logistic EuroScore (ES) and Japan Score (JS) and their predictive accuracy, using our clinical results. Between October 2006 and June 2011, 733 operations suitable for evaluation by the Japan Score were performed at our institute. Isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) was performed in 151 cases, valve surgery (Valve) in 346 cases and aortic surgery (Aorta) in 236 cases. In these cases we calculated 30-day mortality using the EuroSCORE and JapanSCORE and compared the results and prediction accuracy, by calculating the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve) and the area under the ROC curve (AUC). We also calculated 30-day mortality and morbidity by the JapanSCORE and analyzed it by the same method. In the entire group, logistic 30-day mortality by ES and JS was 7.28 and 4.05% respectively. The AUC was 0.740 and 0.806, while 30-day mortality and morbidity calculated by JS was 17.72% and the AUC was 0.646. In the CABG group the 30-day mortality by ES and JS was 5.7 and 3.18% respectively, the AUC was 0.636 and 0.770, the 30-day mortality and morbidity was 13.37% and the AUC was 0.631. In the Valve group 30-day mortality by ES and JS was 6.00 and 3.79% respectively. The AUC was 0.715 and 0.794, 30-day mortality and morbidity was 17.54% and the AUC was 0.606. In the Aorta group 30-day mortality was 10.17 and 4.99% respectively. The AUC was 0.720 and 0.827. The 30-day mortality and morbidity was 20.83% and the AUC was 0.640. The 30-day mortality calculated by JS was significantly lower than that of ES (p<0.001). The prediction accuracy of both of the ES and the JS was satisfactory but the prediction accuracy of JS was better than that of the ES. The prediction accuracy of the logistic 30-day mortality and morbidity were not as accurate as 30-day mortality. JS was a good risk analysis model not only for prediction of surgical results but also for improving surgical outcome.
5.Report of 2012 WFAS International Congress and Workshop on Acupuncture

The 2012 WFAS International Congress and Workshop on Acupuncture were held at Mason Pines Hotel in Bandung, Indonesia on November 16-18, 2012. The last congress held in Indonesia was in 2006 in Bali. This was the second congress held in Indonesia since the establishment of the WFAS in 1987.
The number of participants in the workshop and in the congress were 109 and 260, respectively, from 24 countries. There were seven keynote lectures and 51 oral presentations, including 5 by Japanese scientists.
In addition, the 4th session of the 7th Executive Committee of WFAS was held on November 16, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Mason Pines Hotel.
In this report, the agenda, a discussion of the WFAS Executive Committee meeting, and an outline of the oral presentations are introduced.
6.Tokyo was approved as the host city for the 2016 WFAS annual conference

Executive members of the World Federation of Acupuncture and Moxibustion Societies (WFAS) are elected in the general assembly (GA), which is held once every four years. In addition, member societies that will host the upcoming WFAS conferences over the next 4 years are determined in the GA.
Japan hosted the 3rd World Congress of Acupuncture and Moxibustion in 1993, but has not been invited to host the WFAS annual conference for the past 20 years. In the 8 th WFAS GA held in the Sydney Convention Centre Darling Harbour, Sydney, Australia on 1 November 2013, Japan was elected as the host country for the 2016 WFAS Annual Conference. Thus, the 2016 WFAS Annual Conference will be held in Tokyo, and hosted by the Japan Society of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (JSAM) and Japanese Traditional Acupuncture and Moxibustion Society (JTAMS).
In the election of Executive Members, Shuichi Katai was elected as vice-president of WFAS and Ikuro Wakayama and Naoto Ishizaki were elected as executive members. The term for executive members is four years. In addition, Kiichiro Tsutani, former vice-president of WFAS, was appointed as honorable vice-president, and Yukio Kurosu, former honorable vice-president, was appointed as advisor.
Academic programs were carried out for three days from 2 November 2013. In the WFAS conferences usually more than half of the papers are presented in Chinese, but in Sydney, most papers were presented in English. There were one invited lecture and 13presentations from Japan.
7.PECULIARITY OF MUSCLE STRENGTH IN THE LOWER LIMBS OF SOCCER PLAYERS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF ISOKINETIC MUSCLE STRENGTH AND MRI FINDINGS IN COMPARISON WITH THOSE OF ARCHERS

This study examined peculiarities in both muscle strength and cross-sectional area (CSA) among soccer players in comparison with those of archers as contrasting athletes. Subjects were 15 male soccer players and 9 male archers at N University. Measurement items were height, body weight (BW), isokinetic muscle strength (knee extension, knee flexion, hip extension, hip flexion) and CSA (psoas muscles). Isokinetic muscle strength (30, 120, 240°/sec.) was measured by Cybex6000 (Lumex Co.), and the psoas muscle CSA was determined using magnetic resonance imaging (Hitachi, Japan). Results were as follows : 1. There was no significant difference in isokinetic knee extension and flexion strength/BW at all angular velocities between soccer players and archers. 2. On isokinetic hip flexion strength/BW, the average values of soccer players were significantly higher at all angular velocities than those of archers. However, there was no significant difference in the average values of isokinetic hip extension strength at all angular velocities between the two groups. 3. The average value for the psoas muscle CSA in soccer players was significantly higher than that of archers. In this study, the biggest difference in muscle strength between soccer players and archers was hip flexion strength, and the CSA of the psoas muscle in soccer players, which is the main component of hip flexion, was significantly larger than that of archers. These findings showed the peculiarity of soccer players due to the constant demands of movements involved in ball kicking and running during practice and competition.
8.A Case of Type 2 Diabetes with Ipragliflozin Administration Developing Euglycemic Diabetic Ketoacidosis Due to Reduced Food Intake Following Colonoscopy

The patient was an 80-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes mellitus taking ipragliflozin. She underwent a colonoscopy one week prior to admission. After the colonoscopy, she felt exhausted and lost her appetite. On the day of admission, she was admitted to the emergency department because of abdominal pain and repeated vomiting. Physical examination and chest and abdominal CT were performed; however, no cause was identified for the abdominal pain or vomiting. Blood gas analysis showed high anion gap metabolic acidosis. Serum ketones were elevated to 6,045/μL and plasma glucose concentration was 182 mg/dL. We diagnosed ipragliflozin-induced euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis (euDKA) and discontinued the drug. Ketoacidosis improved with administration of intravenous fluids and insulin injections. Her abdominal pain and vomiting improved. It is important to recognise that patients taking SGLT2 inhibitors may develop euDKA, as in this case, due to fasting after colonoscopy or reduced food intake after the procedure, and to discontinue SGLT2 inhibitors at least 2 days before the procedure.
9.High Infant Mortality Presumably Due to Thiamine Deficiency in Lao PDR

Introduction
During the course of primary health care activities in Khammouane province of Lao PDR by non- profit organization, international support and partnership for health, an exceedingly high infant mortality rate was recognized in some villages. As thiamine deficiency was strongly suspected for the main cause of the high mortality, the household survey with an emphasis on nutritional aspect and the measurement of thiamine level in the blood of mothers as well as their breast-milk were carried out for the confirmation.
Methods
The survey was conducted at Sibounhouane sub-district (Group 1) with the highest infant mortality and Hatkhamhieng sub-district (Group 2) with the lowest mortality. Fifty families of the two groups, each consisting of randomly selected 25 families with less than one year old infant(s) were interviewed by using prepared questionnaire. The body weight of both mother and infant was measured and blood and milk were taken from the mother.
Results
The ethnic minorities of the group 1 consisted of Lao Lum (44%) and Lao Theung (56%), whereas only Lao Lum in the group 2. The economical indicators and the mother's educational level in the group 1 were inferior to those in the group 2. There was no significant difference in the methods of preparing staple glutinous rice, likely to flux thiamine and intake of thiaminases between the two groups. High infant mortality rate was documented in the group 1 whose clinical symptoms were mostly consistent with those of infantile beriberi. The concentration of thiamine in the blood and milk of mothers in both groups were considerably lower and significant reduction of thiamine level was observed in the group 1 than the group 2. Nevertheless, both groups of those infants tended to be inadequately fed with the foods except for breast-milk during their early infantile phase.
Conclusions
The low concentration of thiamine in the blood and milk of mothers was strongly suggestive that infantile beriberi due to thiamine deficiency was the principal cause of the infant mortality in the study region. We hereby surmise that thiamine deficiency could be extensively prevalent in Lao PDR than the currently studied areas because of their traditional preparing methods of staple dietary rice, postpartum food taboos and intake of thiaminases. For the prevention of infant death due to severe thiamine deficiency, necessary measures including the exchange of information among the institutions concerned, adequate thiamine supplementation and nutritional counseling have to be urgently adopted.
10.Report on WFAS Houston 2014

The WFAS Houston 2016 annual conference was held in the Royal Sonesta Hotel, Houston, Texas, USA from 31 October to 2 November 2014. The theme of the conference was "East Meets West -Shaping the Future of Healthcare", and more than 900 acupuncture practitioners and scientists participated. The number of papers presented was 216, including 6 keynote lectures. Papers from Japan numbered 11.
At the Executive Committee (EC) meeting, 39 of the 76 EC members were present (10 EC members sent a letter of attorney in advance), including 3from Japan. Although Tokyo was approved as a host city of WFAS 2016 last year, we proposed changing the venue to the Tsukuba International Congress Center, which was approved.
