1.Sheeted Mohs Paste for Alleviating Symptoms of Malignant Tumors in Home Care

Mohs paste (MP) is a topical treatment that can help relieve the symptoms of self-destructive skin lesions caused by malignant tumors. Despite the potential benefits of MP in improving the quality of life of patients, its use in home-based care is limited due to various obstacles. In this study, we developed a 1-mm-thick MP gauze sheet, which allowed us to apply the MP treatment at home to a patient with breast cancer. After three weekly treatments, the patient’s main symptoms, including itchiness, odor caused by exudates, and mobility issues, showed improvement. By using MP as a sheet, we overcame the obstacles associated with its use, such as alterations in the physical properties and the risk of damage to healthy skin tissue. Additionally, we reduced the treatment duration and need for trained personnel. Our findings suggest that the MP treatment can effectively control the symptoms of patients in home-based care, consistent with prior research.
2.Challenges in the conduct of clinical research

The promotion of clinical research in Japan requires the establishment of a formal and systematic education and training program for clinicians to ensure they become effective clinician investigators. The first of its kind in Japan, a formal 1-year masters-degree-level training program (MCR course) was started at Kyoto University School of Medicine and Public Health. The first 28 students graduated in 2008, with most returning to their original clinical institutions.
1) As follow-up, we conducted a self-administered questionnaire survey of all 28 graduates (response rate, 86%) concerning the current status of clinical research and problems encountered at their institutions.
2) Almost 40% of respondents (n=24) reported "no time" or "no research collaborators" for clinical research.
3) Twenty respondents (83%) have attempted to promote clinical research at their hospital or workplace, but only 1 has received institutional support.
4) Over half of the respondents (54%) would like to be working in both clinical research and clinical practice at their hospital in the future (10-year timescale). Forty-two percent of respondents had a concrete image of the clinical researcher's career path.
5) Although open to improvement, the MCR program presents a concrete model for the education of clinical researchers. These findings suggest that promoting the conduct of clinical research requires the implementation of a support system and adjustment of personal and physical infrastructure.
3.Subacute effects of deep-sea water from the Japan Sea on blood examination values in mice.

OBJECTIVESTo clarify the characteristics of deep-sea water (DSW), we investigated the hematological, immunological and biochemical effects of DSW, specifically the so-called Japan Sea Proper Water (JSPW), samples of which we collected from the Japan Sea at a depth of about 300 meters.
METHODSFive groups of five mice each were orally administered,ad libitum for 12 weeks, one of the following: 1.2% DSW, 12% DSW, 1.2% surface-sea water (SSW), 12% SSW, or purified water (control)
RESULTSAmong these groups, no significant differences were observed in the average reduction of water intake, food consumption or body weight. The mean corpuscular volume, however, was significantly lower (p<0.05) in the 1.2% DSW group than in the control group. Moreover, serum immunoglobulin G and A values were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the 12% DSW and the 12% SSW groups, respectively, compared with the control group. In addition, the serum glucose value in the 12% DSW group was significantly higher (p<0.05) than in the control group
CONCLUSIONSThe findings of the present study suggested the presence of some toxic components in DSW. Before a final answer is reached about whether DSW, and specifically JSPW, is bad for human health, the pathophysiology of findings such as the decreased mean corpuscular volume, the higher immunoglobulin G value and the higher glucose value should be investigated.
