Purpose: Tumor radioresistance and dose-limiting toxicity restrict the curative potential of radiotherapy, requiring novel approaches to overcome the limitations and augment the efficacy. Here, we investigated the effects of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) activation and autophagy induction by irradiation on antiapoptotic proteins and the effectiveness of the BH3 mimetic ABT-737 as a radiosensitizer using K-ras mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells and a Kras G12D :p53 fl/fl mouse (KP mouse) model. Materials and Methods: A549 and H460 cells were irradiated, and the expression of Bcl-2 family proteins, JAK/STAT transcriptional pathway, and autophagic pathway were evaluated by immunoblotting. The radiosensitizing effects of ABT-737 were evaluated using A549 and H460 cell lines with clonogenic assays and also by a KP mouse model with microcomputed tomography and immunohistochemistry. Results: In A549 and H460 cells and mouse lung tissue, irradiation-induced overexpression of the antiapoptotic molecules BclxL, Bcl-2, Bcl-w, and Mcl-1 through JAK/STAT transcriptional signaling induced dysfunction of the autophagic pathway. After treatment with ABT-737 and exposure to irradiation, the number of surviving clones in the cotreatment group was significantly lower than that in the group treated with radiation or ABT-737 alone. In the KP mouse lung cancer model, cotreatment with ABT-737 and radiation-induced significant tumor regression; however, body weight changes in the combination group were not significantly different, suggesting that combination treatment did not cause systemic toxicity. Conclusion These findings supported the radiosensitizing activity of ABT-737 in preclinical models, and suggested that clinical trials using this strategy may be beneficial in K-ras mutant NSCLC.

It is very common that stored blood and various replacement solutions are simultaneously administrated during operation. The stored blood of healthy man was used to find out the hemolysis due to various replacemen solutions for 21 days. We used for the test solutions which were 5% Dextrose in Water, 5% Dextrose and Saline, N-Saline, Volex, Rheomacrodex-D and Hartmann's solution. The results are as follows: 1) It was very significant that F-Value of all the replacement solutions was 8,4773. 2) The most prominent effect of hemolysis was in Rhemacrodex-D and the least one was hartmann's solution among the six replacement solutions for 21 days. 3) It was shown the peaked hemolysis aroun 15th day in the six replacement solutions.

The effects of skeletal muscle relaxants on skeletal muscle have been well known, but not the effects of these drugs on smooth muscle. In and attempt to study the effects of pancuronium, gallamine, succinylcholine, d-Tubocurrarine on siolated mongrel dog tracheal preparations, the writer has performed a set of experiment, of which results can be summarized as follows: 1) Pancuronium in dose of (r/cc) 3,10,30,100 produced dose dependent relaxation on Acetylcholine contraction. 2) Gallamine in dose of (r/cc) 30,100,300,1000 produced dose dependent relaxation on Acetylcholine contracction. 3) Succinylcholine in dose of (r/cc) 30,100,300,1000 produced dose dependent contraction on Acetylcholine contracction. 4) d-Tubocurarine in does of (r/cc) 30,100,300,1000 produced dose dependent contraction on Acetylcholine contracction. From the results described above, it can be concluded that pancuronium and gallamine had bronchodiating character and succinylcholine and d-Tubocurarine had bronchospastic character. But the clinical application of these results are still obscure.

From the results described above, it can be concluded that pancuronium and gallamine have bronchodilating character and succinylcholine and d-Tubocurarine have bronchospastic character.

Systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE) is a disease of unknown etiology in which multiple organs are damaged by pathogenic autoantibodies and immune complexes. Neuropsychiatric manifestations in SLE were first described by Kaposi in 1872. These are so diverse that they include psychosis, depression, stroke, seizure and cognitive dysfunction etc. These patients are frequently consulted for psychiatric evaluation. Neuropsychiatric manifestations in SLE are also among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality and associated with poor long-term outcome. So it is essential to recognize and intervene these symptoms early. But the clear diagnostic criteria for CNS involvement in SLE have not been formulated, and diversity and fluctuation of illness make it difficult to confirm it. The authors reported three cases of SLE with severe neuropsychiatric manifestations. These patients showed symptoms such as disorientation, auditory and visual hallucibation, delusion and mood instability. They became frequently impulsive and violent and had risks to injure themselves or others. Although CNS involvement in SLE is not well known, we reviewed the pathogenesis, classification, diagnosis, clinical manifestation and treatment of them.

Marchiafava-Bignami disease (MBD) is characterized by cerebral white matter lesions associated with chronic alcoholism. Premortem diagnosis of MBD is usually based on history and clinical manifestations. We report a case of acute MBD in which diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) showed high signal intensities along the white matter including the corpus callosum. DWI may be useful in premortem diagnosis of acute MBD.
