Between May 1982 and October 1983, arthroscopic meniscectomy had been performed in 54 knees between ages of 11 and 70 years. There were 32 male patients and 22 female patients in this series. The mean follow-up was 20 months, ranging from 15 months to 33 months. Postoperative complications developed were retropatellar tenderness and effusion. No infection, thrombophlebitis or instability occurred postoperatively. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the various possible prognostic factors upon the developtnent of the above mentioned complications. The factors included were 1) shape of tear, 2) ligamentous injury, 3) degenerative arthritia, 4) discoid lateral meniscus, 5) quadriceps atrophy, 6) sites of meniscus(medial or lateral) & extent of excision, 7) preoperative retropatellar tenderness and 8) method of rehabilitation. The findings were statistically analyzed by the Chi-square test (df-1) & Fisher's direct probability method. The results obtained were as follows; 1. The rate of development of postoperative effusion was significantly high in cases of quadriceps atrophy (P<0.01) and preoperative retropatellar tenderness(P<0.01). 2. The rate of deveopment of postoperative retropatellar tenderness was significantly high in case of discoid lateral meniscus (P <0.01). 3. There was no significant correlation between complications and other factors including shape of tear, preoperative degerative arthritis, site of meniscus & extent of excision and methods of rehabilitation.

Mucus hypersecretion is a common response to chronic inflammation in the lower airways and is a hallmark of chronic rhinosinusitis. It contributes to their morbidity and mortality by plugging airways and causing recurrent infections in lower airway. At present there is no specific treatment for mucus hypersecretion. However, it has been discovered that epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) expression and activation causes mucin production in airways. An EGFR pathway is implicated in mucus cell differentiation induced by various stimuli; therefore, inhibition of the EGFR transduction cascade may provide effective new treatments for hypersecretory airway diseases. EGFR pathways have also been implicated in the regranulation of goblet cell in the airway epithelium. Proving this theory will require the use of selective EGFR inhibitors in clinical studies of nasal hypersecretory states.

We investigated the active proliferation sites of epithelial cells in normal nasal mucosa by immunohistochemical staining of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), the marker of S phase of cell cycle and active cell proliferation. The whole nasal mucosa of the ten normal Sprague-Dawley rats were processed for PCNA immunolabeling. In respiratory portion, distinctly positive reaction was seen mainly in the anterior aspect, that is, the nuclei of squamous and non-ciliated cuboidal/transitional epithelium. These types of epithelial cells are transformed to pseudostratified ciliated epithelium in the posterior direction where positive reaction became scanty. In olfactory epithelium, the nuclei immunoreactive for PCNA were distinct in some area, but absent in other adjacent areas, lacking of region-specific immunolabeling that was observed in respiratory mucosa. These results suggest that anterior portion of nasal cavity is the main proliferation zone of normal nasal respiratory epithelium as well as the main site of protective function. In contrast, the neurogenesis of the olfactory nerve cells is not site-specific, indicating that any region covered by olfactory mucosa may be the main proliferation zone.
