The purpose of this study was to develop the standardized manual for dietetic internship. The general information of the dietetic internship program in Korea was gathered and of dietetic internship(DI) in the USA was also surveyed. The existence of DI program manual, the number of intern and length of the dietetic internship program, and other general information were investigated. At first, the questionnaire was developed and mailed to 130 hospitals in Korea and the number of returned questionnaires was 42 showing participating rate of 28%. Second, telephone survey was carried out and the number of response was 40 out of 46 participating rate of 87%. The results of this study could be summarized as follow. 1. General informations of dietetic internship program in Korea; The hospital having a dietetic internship program was 31.7% and of them 14.6%(12 hospitals) have a manual developed by themselves. The number of dietetic intern per hospital was 2.0+/-1.4. The length of the program was from 3 to 12 months. Ten hospitals (38.5%) have a only food service program and 16 hospitals (62.5%) have both food service and clinical program. Seventy one percent (58 hospitals) of total hospital were willing to use the well developed standardized dietetic internship manual. 2. General information of Dietetic Internship Program in the USA; Two hundred fifty nine hospital had the dietetic internship program approved by ADA. The number of dietetic intern in each hospital was 10.6+/-6.3. The mean length of the program was 13.6+/-6.3 months. Twenty seven percent of institution have coordinated internship/masters degree program. The range of tuition for DI program was from $300 to 30,855(otherwise, interns were payed by the hospital in Korea). As a conclusion, the standardized dietetic internship program for the clinical dietitian as nutrition professionals to carry out their job at the hospitals should be developed. And the coordinated internship/masters degree program could be considered to improve the skill levels and job performances of clinical dietitian.

Tinea corporis usually presents as an erythematous annular plaque with a scaly, concentrically expanding border. However, it is often difficult to diagnose when the initial manifestation is atypical, especially in immunocompromised patients. Early accurate diagnosis on mycologic basis may be of value in controlling the disease and preventing severe infection. We herein report an atypical case of tinea corporis that presented with skin lesions resembling erythema annulare centrifugum. A 61-year-old female presented with multiple, pruritic, polycyclic plaques on the back for a few days. She had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, and was being treated with Velcade chemotherapy. KOH examination was positive, and on histological examination, fungal hyphae were noted on Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain. Fungal cultures from skin scrapings showed growth of Trichophyton rubrum.

Purpose: Children have few small alveoli, which reduce lung compliance; in contrast, their cartilaginous rib cage makes their chest wall highly compliant. This combination promotes lung collapse. Prolonged inspiratory to expiratory (I:E) ratio ventilation is used to optimize gas exchange and respiratory mechanics in surgery. However, the optimal ratio is unclear in children. We hypothesized that, compared to a 1:2 I:E ratio, a 1:1 I:E ratio would improve dynamic compliance and oxygenation, and affect the peak airway pressure in pediatric patients undergoing surgery. Materials and Methods: Forty-eight patients aged ≤6 years who were scheduled to undergo surgery under general anesthesia with an arterial line were randomly allocated to receive 1:1 (group 1:1) or 1:2 (group 1:2) I:E ratio ventilation. Airway pressure, respiratory system compliance, and arterial blood gas analyses were compared between groups immediately after induction (T0), 30 min after induction (T1), 60 min after induction (T2), immediately after surgery (T3), and on arrival at the post-anesthesia care unit (T4). Results: Peak and plateau airway pressures were significantly lower in group 1:1 than in group 1:2 at T1 (p=0.044 and 0.048, respectively). The dynamic and static compliances were significantly higher in group 1:1 than in group 1:2 at T1 (p=0.044 and 0.045, respectively). However, the partial pressure of oxygen did not significantly differ between groups. Conclusion Compared to a 1:2 I:E ratio, a 1:1 I:E ratio improved dynamic compliance and lowered the peak airway pressure without complications in pediatric patients. Nevertheless, our results do not support its use solely for improving oxygenation.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the prevalence of colorectal cancer related with metabolic syndrome is increasing in Korea. The aim of this study was to reveal a relationship between components of metabolic syndrome and the development of colon polyp. METHODS: Among the subjects who visited a health promotion center of one university hospital and underwent colonoscopic examination from February 2010 to February 2011, a total of 1,630 (males 1,156, females 474) asymptomatic adults were included for the study. Sex, age, body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol levels and the presence of colorectal polyps were measured. Alcohol consumption, smoking and exercise were assessed by a self-administered questionnaire. Metabolic syndrome was defined by criteria of 2004 American Heart Association/Updated NCEP Adult Treatment Panel III. RESULTS: The prevalence of colon polyps and metabolic syndrome was 21.7% and 16.0% respectively among study subjects. After adjustment for sex and age, metabolic syndrome (odds ratio [OR]=1.72, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.05-2.82, P=0.031) and waist circumference (OR=1.04, 95% CI 1.01-1.06, P=0.009) were associated with increased risk of colorectal polyps. CONCLUSION: Metabolic syndrome and waist circumference were associated with increased risk of colon polyps in asymptomatic Korean adults.

The term electrosurgery refers to the passage of high-frequency alternating electrical current through the tissue, to achieve a specific surgical effect. It is used in everyday dermatologic practice for various purposes, including tissue dissection, bleeding control, and the removal of common skin lesions such as viral warts, melanocytic nevi, and cherry angiomas. Considering the nature of the device, adverse effects including skin burn and scarring can occur at any stage of the procedure. Therefore, it is essential that electrosurgery be performed by skilled and well-trained physicians. In this paper, we introduce a brief history of electrosurgery and present its categories and their clinical uses. In addition, the possible adverse effects and safety measures of electrosurgery are addressed.

Aspergillosis is defined to include any infection caused by a species of Aspergillus. Aspergillosis is a granulomatous, necrotizing. and cavitary disease of lung, often with hematogenous spread to other organs such as brain. kidney, heart, spleen. intestine, skin, and bone. Aspergillosis is becoming increasingly vulnerable to patients with malignant disease and to patients receiving immunosuppressive therapy and antibiotics for a wide range of illness. We present a case of this disease involved the right kidney without lung.
