Korean Journal of Community Nutrition 2023;28(4):269-281
Objectives:
This study aimed to examine the frequency of convenience food consumption at convenience stores (CVS) and the CVS usage patterns of middle and high school students as well as to understand students’ attitude toward sodium and sugar reduction.
Methods:
We used an online questionnaire for data collection. The questionnaire comprised five distinct categories: general characteristics, CVS usage, frequency of consumption according to convenience food menus at CVS, attitude toward sodium and sugar reduction, and adherence to dietary guidelines.
Results:
A total of 75 students from Seoul (14 middle school students and 61 high school students) participated in the study. Most respondents visit CVS 3-5 times a week. CVS are predominantly used during weekdays, mostly during lunch, and dinner. The students mostly checked the caloric content and expiration date as food labeling information. The participants were aware of the need to reduce their sugar and sodium intake. Among frequent CVS convenience food consumers, there was an increased consideration of the need to reduce their sugar and sodium consumption, despite their actual selection of foods with high sugar and sodium content. Additionally, they did not check the sugar and sodium levels indicated in food labeling. Further, the dietary action guide from the Ministry of Health and Welfare were poorly followed by most students.
Conclusions
There is a need for nutrition education specifically addressing the sugar and sodium content of the convenience foods predominantly consumed by students. Additionally, educating students with frequent convenience food consumption to actively check the sugar and sodium information on food labels could help promote healthier food choices.
2.The Effect of Pre-warming for Patients under Abdominal Surgery on Body Temperature, Anxiety, Pain, and Thermal Comfort.
Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2010;40(3):317-325
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of pre-warming on body temperature, anxiety, pain, and thermal comfort. METHODS: Forty patients who were scheduled for abdominal surgery were recruited as study participants and were assigned to the experimental or control group. For the experimental group, a forced air warmer was applied for 45-90 min (M=68.25, SD=15.50) before surgery. Body temperature and anxiety were measured before and after the experiment, but pain and thermal comfort were assessed only after the surgery. Hypotheses were tested using t-test and repeated measured ANOVA. RESULTS: The experimental group showed higher body temperature than the control group from right before induction to two hours after surgery. Post-operative anxiety and pain in the experimental group were less than those of the control group. In addition, the score of thermal comfort was significantly higher in the experiment group. CONCLUSION: Pre-warming is effective in maintaining body temperature, lowering sensitivity to pain and anxiety, and promoting thermal comfort. Therefore, pre-warming can be recommended as a preoperative nursing intervention.

4.Adaptation and Evaluation of the Incontinence Care Protocol.
Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2015;45(3):357-366
PURPOSE: This study was done to develop an evidence-based incontinence care protocol through an adaptation process and to evaluate the effects of the protocol. METHODS: The protocol was developed according to the guideline of adaptation. A non-randomized controlled trial was used for testing the effects of the new Incontinence Care Protocol. A total of 120 patients having bowel incontinence with Bristol stool type 5, 6, and 7 and admitted to intensive care units were recruited to this study. The newly developed incontinence care protocol was used with patients in the experimental group and conventional skin care was given to patients in the control group. Outcome variables were incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) severity, pressure ulcer occurrence and severity. RESULTS: The experimental group had significantly less severe IAD (t=6.69, p<.001), lower occurrence of pressure ulcers (chi2=7.35, p=.007), and less severity of pressure ulcers (Mann-Whitney=86.00, p=.009) than the control group. CONCLUSION: Use of this incontinence care protocol has the effects of preventing pressure ulcers and inhibiting worsening of IAD and pressure ulcers. Therefore, this incontinence care protocol is expected to contribute to managing IAD and pressure ulcers.

Korean Journal of Pathology 2011;45(Suppl 1):S41-S44
We herein describe a case of a 55-year-old healthy woman with localized primary thymic amyloidosis presented as a mediastinal mass, found incidentally by chest radiography. Computed tomography revealed a 4.1 cm soft tissue lesion with nodular calcification in the left anterior mediastinum. The resected specimen was a well-defined lobulating mass with calcification. Microscopically, the mass was consisted of amorphous eosinophilc hyalinized substances involving the thymus and intrathymic lymph nodes. These eosinophilic substances showed apple-green bi-refringence under polarized light after staining with Congo red. In immunohistochemical study, they were positive for kappa and lambda light chains and negative for amyloid A. There was no evidence of systemic amyloidosis in clinical investigations. A final diagnosis of localized primary thymic amyloidosis was made.

Korean Journal of Community Nutrition 2020;25(4):303-316
Methods:
In this study, five subjects with colorectal cancer undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy were interviewed in-depth using the Giorgi study method. The contents of the nutrition education visits and in-depth interviews were transcribed in the language of the subject after recording, and the appropriateness of the data was improved by reflecting the subject’s actions and facial expressions.
Results:
After conducting the in-depth interviews for each subject, the experience of the subject’s diet and adjuvant chemotherapy was drawn into two domains, six elements, and 26 sub-elements. In the cognitive domain, the patients experienced physical and psychological changes, and the need for nutrition management was recognized by analyzing the dietary causes of the diseases. In the domain of practice, a knowing-doing gap was formed, unlike the patient’s will. Factors that inhibited compliance with nutritional management included digestive problems, sensory changes, loss of appetite, and social interaction stress.
Conclusions
Dietary management is very important for patients receiving periodic anticancer therapy, and step-by-step training and personal monitoring based on the chemotherapy order is necessary to maintain the patient’s will and social and environmental support.

Journal of Nutrition and Health 2022;55(6):699-708
Purpose:
Adequate nutrition is to be provided for normal growth and development during early childhood. Currently, childcare teachers provide lunch to most children in Korea. The purpose of this study was to investigate the portion size provided by teachers and examine the effect of education on food serving size.
Methods:
The subjects were childcare teachers (n = 120) in charge of children aged 3–5 years at a daycare center in Hanam-si. The survey was conducted through questionnaires which included questions on the general characteristics of the teachers, their nutritional education status, and the source of nutrition information. In addition, the portion sizes of items on the menu currently provided to children were measured and the data were analyzed. To assess the effectiveness of education in determining serving size, the subjects were randomly equally divided into two groups. In the first group (n = 60) theoretical education on nutrition and serving sizes was given, whereas in the second (n = 60), practical education on these topics was provided.
Results:
The difference between the actual portion size of rice and the serving size announced on the menu was observed to decrease along with the increase in the experience of the teacher, although the differences in the main dish and kimchi were higher. The gap between the serving size mentioned in the menu and the portion size distributed widened as the age of the teachers increased. Notably, the difference between the portion size and the serving size of food decreased after both practical and theoretical education. Furthermore, the effect of education on the serving size of the main dishes (p < 0.001), side dishes (p < 0.01), and kimchi (p < 0.01) was observed to be greater in the practical education group than in the theoretical education group.
Conclusion
Regular education should be provided to teachers on the serving sizes mentioned in the menu, as the quantity of food served depends on the experience and age of teachers. In the case of rice, theoretical education alone sufficed to ensure a proper serving size. However, hands-on training on the main and side dishes, and kimchi would be much more helpful.

Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2020;50(4):611-620
The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (K-WLEIS). Methods: Data were collected from 360 nursing students using a self reported questionnaire. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were used to test construct validity. Convergence validity was identified by correlation with communication competency.Item convergent and discriminant validity were also analyzed. Reliability was evaluated internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Results: The results of exploratory factor analysis showed that the eigen values ranged from 1.34 to 5.86 and 73.2% of the total explained variance. Confirmatory factor analysis showed adequate model fit indices (χ 2 /df 1.89, RMSEA .07, GFI .89, CFI .95, and TLI .93) and standardized factor loadings (.48 to .87). The average extracted variances (.71 to .79) and composite reliability (.80 to .87) validated convergence and discriminant validity of the items. Test-retest reliability of intra-class correlation coefficient was .90 and the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was .88. Conclusion: The K-WLEIS is an appropriate scale for measuring the emotional intelligence of Korean nursing students. Therefore, it is expected that the K-WLEIS will be used for nursing education programs to improve nursing students’ emotional intelligence.

Korean Journal of Pathology 2011;45(Suppl 1):S32-S35
Diffuse pulmonary meningotheliomatosis (DPM) is an extremely rare condition. We herein report a unique case of DPM in a 54-year-old woman with a previous history of hepatocellular carcinoma. A chest computed tomography showed diffuse bilateral nodular infiltration, suggesting miliary spread of metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma. The patient underwent a video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for diagnostic purposes. The cut surface of the lung specimen showed multiple dispersed small nodules, consisting of variably sized nests or whorls of bland epithelioid cells often along the walls of alveolar septa or in a perivascular network within the alveolar interstitium. The tumor cells showed immunoreactivity for epithelial membrane antigen, vimentin, and progesterone receptor. DPM should be included in the differential diagnosis of diffuse multiple small nodules or a reticular pattern in the radiologic studies.

10.The effects of indoxyl sulfate-induced endothelial microparticles on neointimal hyperplasia formation in an ex vivo model.
Jung Hwa RYU ; HeeJung PARK ; Seung Jung KIM
Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research 2017;93(1):11-17
PURPOSE: Neointimal hyperplasia (NH) is considered to be one of the main causes of vascular access occlusion in patients receiving hemodialysis. Endothelial injury and TGF-β-mediated proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) induce NH. Endothelial microparticles (EMPs) are also increased by endothelial injury. We aimed to investigate the effects of EMPs and TGF-β expression on VSMC proliferation and their contributions to NH formation in an ex vivo model. METHODS: EMPs were collected from the culture media of human umbilical vein endothelial cells treated with indoxyl sulfate (IS, 250 µg/mL) after ultracentrifugation at 100,000 × g. Porcine internal jugular veins were isolated and treated with EMPs (2 × 10⁶ /mL) or left untreated for 12 days and subsequently compared with TGF-β (10 ng/mL)-treated venous tissue. Intima-media thickness and NH area were assessed using a digital program. Masson's trichrome staining and immunohistochemistry (IHC) analysis for α-smooth muscle actin, phosphorylated Akt, ERK1/2, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and Smad3 were performed on each vein sample. RESULTS: NH and VSMC proliferation developed to a significantly greater degree in EMP-treated veins compared to controls, with similar patterns seen in TGF-β-stimulated samples. IHC analysis demonstrated that EMPs markedly increased phosphorylation of Akt, ERK1/2, p38 MAPK, and Smad3 in areas of venous NH formation. CONCLUSION: Our results showed that IS-induced EMPs provoked massive VSMC proliferation and NH formation via activation of the TGF-β signaling pathways. Further investigation is needed to elucidate the precise mechanism of EMP activity on vascular access stenosis in vivo.
