PURPOSE: This study was done to identify that Rooming-in of new mothers have an influence on continuous breast feeding. METHOD: This is a comparative survey study which was done by self reported questionnaire and telephone contacts. The subjects are collected from two groups which consist of 29 in Rooming-in group and 24 in Non-Rooming-in group respectively. The data were collected method of this study was lists of given to mothers while they were in the hospital and interviews by telephone were done at their home 3 months and 6 months after delivery. RESULT: The results of this study were as follows: 1. The rates of breast feeding were 79.3% in the Rooming-in group and 41.7% in the non-Rooming-in group after 3 months. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups(chi2=10.217, p=.009). 2. The rates of breast feeding were 69.0% in the Rooming-in group and 29.2% in the Non-Rooming-in group at 6 months. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups(chi-square=10.310, p=.012). CONCLUSION: Rooming-in system provoke an increase of the breast feeding rate in new mothers and encourage them to keep breast feeding. In addition, it would be desirable that hospitals apply Rooming-in system actively and encourage new mothers to breast feed for 24 hours a day. It could be make breast feeding successful.

In Korea, nation-wide statistical data on patients who have received therapy for primary liver cancer or its natural history is non-existent. Moreover, various local treatment methods for hepatoma such as percutaneous alcohol injection therapy, microwave coagulation therapy, and radiofrequency ablation therapy are being performed without a period of verification or consensus. This has led to a lack of uniformity not only in establishing the initial mode of therapy for hepatomas, but also among various institutions, and also a tendency for conflict rather than synergy among the various treatment modalities. Therefore, there exists a dire need for a national cancer registry for hepatoma. Fortunately, as a first step, the Korean Liver Cancer Study Group was established in June of 1999 to arrive at a consensus and hence overcome these problems, and to establish an environment for co-operation between institutions. In June of 2001 "The general rules for the study of primary liver cancer" was published which successfully lay down the groundwork for the promulgation of a national registry. With the above mentioned Korean Liver Cancer Study Group acting a central role, this author attempts to describe present status of database of the Cancer Registry for Hepatoma which has been completed after a year and a half, and also to explain its characteristics and implementation.

Due to recent rapid advances in imaging modalities, there has been a marked increase in the early diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Also, the emergence of effective local treatment methods has lead to the necessity for a wider selection of therapeutic modalities depending on the individual characteristics of each patient, such as tumor factors and hepatic factors, rather than a single uniform approach. At present, accurate preoperative liver function evaluation is available, and in addition, increased knowledge of the liver anatomy through liver transplantation, and advances in postoperative patient care has subsequently decreased the morbidity and mortality rates significantly after surgery. Such newly developed techniques and acquired knowledge has allowed the surgical option to expand from the classical hepatic lobectomy to systematic subsegmentectomy. Not only for early HCC, but also for intermediate HCC and advanced HCC, hepatectomy has shown the best results in each stage of disease with regard to treatment goals. It is therefore thought that hepatectomy should always be considered as the main treatment method in the multimodality treatment of HCC, as long as the liver function reserve permits, to enhance the quality of life, increase survival, and to cure disease. The authors present here a summary of the role of surgical approaches in HCC with respect to recent increases in the detection of early stage disease, new therapeutic modalities, and a new staging system for HCC.
