1.The Importance and Global Trends of Biological Resources: The Introduction of the KCTC and Fungal Resources.

In 1985, the Korean Collection for Type Cultures (KCTC), a former organization of the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology Biological Resource Center (KBRC), was officially approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) as a gene bank node and became a member of the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC). The KBRC was also designated as an International Depository Authority (IDA) under Budapest Treaty in 1990. As a national bio-infra for biological resources, the main functions of the KBRC are 1) collection, preservation and distribution of biological resources, 2) research and development of core technologies for valuable bioresources, and 3) construction of local and international network of biological resources and information. As major activities in 2007, about 1,300 type and reference strains including bacteria, actinomycetes, yeasts, filamentous fungi, anaerobes, cell lines and patent strains were newly acquired and about 4,000 strains were distributed to academia, industries and research institutes. The KBRC published 49 papers regarding biological resources and described 18 new microbial species. Especially, a big progress was made in several aspects: establishment of the back-up depository system for over 3,300 patent strains, development of the barcode system for computerized and centralized management of biological resources, and structural remodeling. The KBRC is going to promote tighter networking among domestic and international culture collections, to strengthen the national depository system for bioproducts from research, and to emphasize research and development related to the collection and preservation of valuable biological resources. Consequently, the KBRC will expand its roles not only as a national infrastructure for life science and biotechnology but also as a fundamental basis of many industries in an era of bio-economy in the 21st century.

2.Preoperative Staging of Rectal Cancer by CT & MRI.

Accurate staging of rectal cancer preoperatively is important to plan a proper treatment and to predict treatment results. For the preoperative staging of rectal cancer, computed tomography (CT), transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have been used, but the role of them remains controversial. This research was intended to compare and analyze the accuracy of CT and MRI in the preoperative staging of rectal cancer. METHODS: From January 1998 to June 1999, sixty patients were studied by CT and MRI before their operations for rectal cancer in our institution, but two patients with local excision were excluded in N-staging as objects. The patients who had preoperative irradiation were also excluded in this study. Preoperative staging with CT and MRI were conducted by one radiologist according to 1997's TNM classification based on AJCC. On the results of pathological findings after operation, preoperative staging with CT and MRI were classified into T-staging and N-staging. Accuracy and agreement rate between pathological staging and preoperative staging by CT and MRI were compared and analyzed by Kappa value. RESULTS: The accuracy of CT was 68 percent in T-staging, and 58 percent in N-staging, MRI showed accuracy of 82 percent in T-staging and 64 percent in N-staging. In the T-staging, the agreement rate between pathological staging and CT staging was 0.54 (95% confidence interval), while the agreement rate was 0.70 in MRI staging, resulting in a higher agreement rate with MRI than with CT. In the N-staging, the agreement rate between pathological staging and CT staging was 0.38, with a relatively lower agreement rate, while the agreement rate was 0.56 in MRI staging. In our study, MRI showed a higher agreement rate than CT. CONCLUSIONS: In the future, more research should be conducted, but it can be conclued that in preoperative staging for rectal cancer, MRI using body arrayed coil has a better accuracy than CT. Subsequently MRI staging should be considered as a more useful investigation method before operation than CT.

3.Comparison of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and Electroneuronography Between Bell's Palsy and Ramsay Hunt Syndrome in Their Acute Stages.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the neurophysiologic status in patients with idiopathic facial nerve palsy (Bell's palsy) and Ramsay Hunt syndrome (herpes zoster oticus) within 7 days from onset of symptoms, by comparing the amplitude of compound muscle action potentials (CMAP) of facial muscles in electroneuronography (ENoG) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). METHODS: The facial nerve conduction study using ENoG and TMS was performed in 42 patients with Bell's palsy and 14 patients with Ramsay Hunt syndrome within 7 days from onset of symptoms. Denervation ratio was calculated as CMAP amplitude evoked by ENoG or TMS on the affected side as percentage of the amplitudes on the healthy side. The severity of the facial palsy was graded according to House-Brackmann facial grading scale (H-B FGS). RESULTS: In all subjects, the denervation ratio in TMS (71.53+/-18.38%) was significantly greater than the denervation ratio in ENoG (41.95+/-21.59%). The difference of denervation ratio between ENoG and TMS was significantly smaller in patients with Ramsay Hunt syndrome than in patients with Bell's palsy. The denervation ratio of ENoG or TMS did not correlated significantly with the H-B FGS. CONCLUSION: In the electrophysiologic study for evaluation in patients with facial palsy within 7 days from onset of symptoms, ENoG and TMS are useful in gaining additional information about the neurophysiologic status of the facial nerve and may help to evaluate prognosis and set management plan.

4.Pain-Related Evoked Potential in Healthy Adults.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the normal data of pain-related evoked potentials (PREP) elicited with a concentric surface electrode among normal, healthy adults and the relationship between PREP and pain intensity. METHODS: Sixty healthy volunteers (22 men and 38 women; aged 36.4+/-10.7 years; height, 165.4+/-7.8 cm) were enrolled. Routine nerve conduction study (NCS) was done to measure PREP following electrical stimulation of hands (C7 dermatome) and feet (L5 dermatome). Negative peak (N), positive peak (P) latencies, peak to peak (NP) amplitudes, conduction velocity (CV), and verbal rating scale (VRS) score were obtained. Linear regression analysis tested for significant relevance between variables of PREP and VRS score. RESULTS: Normal NCS results were obtained in all subjects. N latency of hand PREP was 163.8 +/-40.0 ms (right) and 161.0+/-39.9 ms (left). N latency of foot PREP was 178.0+/-43.9 ms (right), 180.4+/-43.4 ms (left). NP amplitude of hands was 20.6+/-10.6 microV (right) and 21.9+/-11.6 microV (left). NP amplitude of feet was 18.8+/-8.3 microV (right) and 19.0+/-8.4 microV (left). The calculated CV was 13.2+/-4.7 m/s and VRS score was 3.8+/-1.0. A highly significant positive correlation was evident between VRS score and NP amplitude (y=0.1069x+1.781, r=0.877, n=60, p<0.0001). CONCLUSION: PREP among normal, healthy adults revealed a statistically significant correlation between PREP amplitude and VRS score.

5.Effect of Regular Exercise on Cardiopulmonary Fitness in Males With Spinal Cord Injury.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cardiopulmonary endurance of subjects with spinal cord injury by measuring the maximal oxygen consumption with varying degrees of spinal cord injury level, age, and regular exercise. METHODS: We instructed the subjects to perform exercises using arm ergometer on healthy adults at 20 years of age or older with spinal cord injury, and their maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) was measured with a metabolic measurement system. The exercise proceeded stepwise according to the exercise protocol and was stopped when the subject was exhausted or when VO2 reached an equilibriu RESULTS: Among the 40 subjects, there were 10 subjects with cervical cord injury, 27 with thoracic cord injury, and 3 with lumbar cord injury. Twenty-five subjects who were exercised regularly showed statistically higher results of VO2max than those who did not exercise regularly. Subjects with cervical injury showed statistically lower VO2max than the subjects with thoracic or lumbar injury out of the 40 subjects with neurologic injury. In addition, higher age showed a statistically lower VO2max. Lastly, the regularly exercising paraplegic group showed higher VO2max than the non-exercising paraplegic group. CONCLUSION: There are differences in VO2max of subjects with spinal cord injury according to the degree of neurologic injury, age, and whether the subject participates in regular exercise. We found that regular exercise increased the VO2max in individuals with spinal cord injury.
