BACKGROUND: Electromagnetic fields (EMF) are ubiquitous in modern society including medical field. As the technology of medical instruments and telecommunications has developed rapidly, it has influenced on our lives in many ways. Modern medical practice requires high quality medical equipments, which have a great deal of electromagnetic interference and susceptibility. The purpose of this study were to evaluate electromagnetic condition under usual clinical condition and to suggest a practical guideline in general hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The actual state of the electromagnetic interference in the medical field was studied under usual clinical conditions including operating rooms, intensive care units, magnetic resonance imaging unit, and hyperthermia unit. RESULTS: There was considerable noise as a result of electromagnetic fields from medical equipments including electrosurgical units and hyperthermia unit, and cellular phones, which could induce serious functional derangements of functioning medical devices. CONCLUSION: It will be necessary to evaluate the individual electromagnetic situations under various medical conditions and to define a limited zone for cellular phone as well as reposition medical equipments to secure a safer medical practice and to minimize electromagnetic interference.

The purpose of this study was to investigate perceptions of Korean foods and school foodservice satisfaction levels among middle school students as provided by a Korean menu-focused school foodservice. The study subjects included middle school freshmen attending a school providing Korean menus and their parents. A survey questionnaire was administered to obtain information on general characteristics, perceptions of traditional Korean foods, and degrees of satisfaction toward school foodservice. The student subjects had significantly lower interest and preference for traditional Korean foods and less positive perceptions of traditional Korean foods than the parent subjects. In regard to degrees of satisfaction for school foodservice, the students evaluated the current Korean menu-focused foodservice significantly higher than the previous foodservice provided to them during their elementary school days. The parent subjects' also generally reported very high satisfaction levels of the foodservice. The current study findings suggest there are positive effects of Korean-style school foodservice and support its further expansion to other schools. It is recommended that dietary education on the excellence of traditional Korean foods should accompany the provision of Korean-style foodservices in order to better guide adolescents' recognition of the matter.

Intraosseous arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in the craniofacial region is rare. When it occurs, it is predominantly located in the mandible and maxilla. We encountered a 43-year-old woman with Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome affecting the right lower extremity who presented with a left orbital chemosis and proptosis mimicking the cavernous sinus dural arteriovenous fistula. Computed tomography angiography revealed an intraosseous AVM of the sphenoid bone. The patient's symptoms were completely relieved after embolization with Onyx. We report an extremely rare case of intraosseous AVM involving the sphenoid bone, associated with Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) is unique to pulmonary circulation. Recent hypotheses have emerged indicating that O2 levels per se can regulate ion channel activity. The modulation of both cation channels differs according to the conduit or resistance pulmonary vessel type. However, it is not yet studied that the cation channel blocker has the same effect in an animal experimental model, which can exclude several factors that may influence on HPV. The purpose of the present study was, therefore, to determine the effect of nonspecific cation blocker, Gadolinium, on HPV in a rabbit model of isolated lung perfusion. METHODS: In adult white rabbits (n = 6), lungs were isolated and perfused with the constant pulmonary perfusate flow. Acid-base status and electrolytes of perfusate also constantly maintained. Thirty minutes after, baseline hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) was measured as the difference of pulmonary artery pressure between a period of 21% normoxic gas inhalation and that of 3% hypoxic gas inhalation. After another thirty minutes, Gadolinium 50microgram were mixed to the perfusate, and then HPV were measured three times. After then Gadolinium 100, 200, 400microgram were mixed to the perfusate and HPV were measured. RESULTS: Gadolinium decreased the HPV response according to the dose. The ED50 of the response was 143microgram/100 ml. CONCLUSIONS: The regulation of HPV is based on the cation channel in the isolated rabbit lung.

Giant fusiform aneurysms at the basilar trunk tend to have a poor natural history and surgical management for these aneurysms remains controversial. For these aneurysms, basilar trunk occlusion with endovascular coiling is difficult when the collateral supply from the carotid circulation is relatively poor. Interestingly, we herein present a successfully treated case of a partially thrombosed giant fusiform aneurysm at the basilar trunk with relatively poor collateral supply using endovascular coil occlusion following bypass surgery (superficial temporal artery-radial artery-superior cerebellar artery anastomosis).

9.Dural Arteriovenous Fistula Involving Transverse Sinus: Successful Embolization Using Onyx(R).

Neurointervention 2008;3(2):87-91
Transvenous coil embolization has been successfully applied for the treatment of cerebral dural arteriovenous fistulae. Unfortunately, the technique can not be applied in cases of poor or absent venous access route to the fistula, the situation of which is not uncommon. Transarterial embolization can be performed as an alternative method. However, the method usually ended in partial embolization of the fistulae because of the multiplicity of the dural feeders and anfractuosity of the feeders. Use of liquid embolic material, such as glue in transarterial embolization generally regarded as not conventional. Recently we experienced a successful embolization using a newly introduced liquid embolic material, Onyx in a case of transverse-sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistula which was failed to be embolized with transvenous approach.

Neurointervention 2011;6(2):95-99
Embolization of an aneurysm at the proximal A1 segment of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) is technically challenging. We treated four consecutive patients with unruptured aneurysms at the proximal portion of the A1 segment of the ACA. We tested various microcatheter tip shapes before we successfully embolized a lesion with a zigzag-shaped microcatheter tip, which was made by steam shaping. The shape of this microcatheter tip resembled the letter "Z", had a relatively long distal straight segment and was helpful in prompt catheterization of the aneurysm sac and stable placement of the catheter and delivery of coils.
