OBJECTIVE: To explore the neuroprotective effect of electroacupuncture therapy on damaged cholinergic neurons in hippocampus in aged rats with Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: Thirty six aged male rats were randomly divided into normal control group, sham-operated group, untreated group and electroacupuncture group. Animal model of AD was established with fimbria-fornix transection. The rats in the electroacupuncture group received electroacupuncture on Baihui (DU 20), Yongquan (KI 1), Taixi (KI 3) and Xuehai (SP10). The activity of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) in septal area of brain was detected by radioimmunoassay, and the protein expressions of nerve growth factor (NGF) and c-fos in CA3 region of hippocampus were detected by immunohistochemical assay. RESULTS: The ChAT activity and the expression levels of NGF and c-fos proteins in the electroacupuncture group were significantly higher than those in the untreated group. CONCLUSION: Electroacupuncture therapy can protect cholinergic neurons in hippocampus in aged rats with AD by means of promoting synthesis of c-fos protein and increasing the expression level of NGF.

Objective:To investigate the effects of Maijun'an Tablets on expression of endothelin-1(ET-1) and nitricoxide synthase(NOS) in tissues and plasma of spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR). Methods:12 spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR) were divided randomly into normal control group and drug administration group. Rats in drug administration group were orally given with Maijun'an Tablets (hydrochlorothiazide 10 mg?kg-1.d-1,puerarin 36 mg?kg-1.d-1 and total alkaloid of rhynchophylla 122 mg?kg-1.d-1) once a day for 4 weeks, and rats in control group were orally dosed with equal amount of physiological saline. All animals were sacrificed after 4 weeks. The mRNA and protein contents of ET-1 and NOS in plasma, liver, kidnay and blood vessel were determined. Results:Compared with the control group,Maijun'an Tablets can effectively reduce blood pressure of SHRs,regulate down the content of ET-1 and regulate up the content of NOS at mRNA and protein levels. Conclusion:The up-regulation of NOS and down-regulation of ET-1 at mRNA and protein levels were the major antihypertensive machnisam of Maijun'an Tablets for SHRs.

Objective To establish a rat model of pulmonary hypertension induced by left-to-right shunt and explore the influence of high pulmonary blood flow on pulmonary vascular collagen remodeling. Methods Abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava shunting was produced in rats. Pulmonary artery meanpressure (PAMP) of each rat was measured by using a right cardiac catheterization.Pulmonary artery collagen Ⅰ and Ⅲ were detected using immunohistochemisty. Results After 11 weeks of shunting the Qp/Qs was 3.3∶1.0,indicating a large shunt. Pulmonary artery mean pressure was increased as compared with controls[(23.0?0.9) mm Hg vs (15.7? 1.1) mm Hg,P

A 38-year-old man presented with a 2-year history of recurreit irticaria, abdominal pain and arthralgia of his finger joints. These symptoms were not con rolled in spite of taking medication and had a tendence to be aggravated in the winter. Laboratory findings revealed hvpocomlementemia, hypergammaglobulinemia and a positive rect on with an ice cube test. Skin biopsy specimen taken from the urticarial lesion of the left upper arm showed leukocytoclastic vasculitis with perivascular neutrophilic infiltrition, nuclear dusts, and extravasation of red blood cells. We thus made the diagnosis of hypocomplementemic urtirarial vasculitis syndrome with cold urticaria. The patient was treatcd ith systemic corticosteroids and antihistamines.
