Objective To assess the application of echocardiography in mini-invasive surgical device closure of ventricular septal defect (VSD). Methods 73 VSD patients including 35 with aneurysm formation and among them 21 with multi-defects in the aneurysm were treated by mini-invasive device closure. A closure device was positioned to the defect through parastemal mini-incision in all patients. TEE was used to monitor the whole procedure, to guide the device positioning and to evaluate the curative effect instantly after operation. All patients were evaluated by TTE one year postoperatively. Results All patients were successfully positioned closure devices by TEE guiding. 9 cases were found with trace to small amount residual shunt instantly after operation. 7 cases still had small amount residual shunt at the time of 48 hours after the operation. In the one year follow-up, 4 cases had residual shunt, but the size and volume of left ventricle were significantly reduced than those before operation, and the pulmonary artery systolic pressure was also reduced. Conclusion Echocardiography possesses an important role in preoperative indication screening, intraoperation monitoring and evaluating the curative effect postoperatively.

OBJECTIVETo present a method of quantitative diagnosis of craniofacial skeleton deformities based on three-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT).
METHODS20 cases with facial asymmetric deformities underwent 3D CT and the 3D images were reconstructed by Mimics 10.0 (Belgium). Anatomical landmarks were located and the coordinate of the landmarks obtained. Axial images of 1 patient with Romberg disease was used as representative case. The differences in the distance between the right landmarks and the left were calculated and analyzed.
RESULTSThe measurement results were not significantly different between two stages with an interval of 4 weeks ( P > 0.05), showing a reproducible resutls. The deviation of landmarks at facial midline increased gradually from upward to downward, reaching (2.63 +/- 0.54) mm at menton point. Paired landmarks showed asymmetry in three dimensions, especially gonion point on the left side, which was deviated 10.21 mm inward, 9.26 mm forward, 6.30 mm upward, compared to the opposite side.
CONCLUSIONSThe method of 3D CT quantitative analysis can provide precise information in the diagnosis and treatment planning of facial asymmetry deformity.

Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine 2009;29(1):68-71
OBJECTIVETo explore the effect of salvia injection (SI) combined with composite amino acid (CAA) in treating fetal growth restriction (FGR).
METHODSA retrospective analysis was conducted on 106 pregnant women with FGR hospitalized from January 2007 to January 2008. Patients were randomized into 2 groups equally, the treated group (53 cases) treated with SI plus CAA, and the control group treated with CAA alone, all for 7 days. The clinical effect and umbilical blood flow (S/D) in patients were observed.
RESULTS(1) The total effective rate in the treated group was 81.13%, it was 88.80% (16/18) for patients in the gestation period of 24+ -28 weeks, 80.00% (12/15) for those of 28+ -32 weeks, and 75.00 (15/20) for 32+ -36 weeks, while in the control group, the corresponding rates were 69.81%, 77.77% (14/18), 66.66% (10/15), and 65.00% (13/20), respectively. The difference between the two groups was significant (P < 0.05). (2) After treatment, S/D significantly lowered in patients of the treated group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01), no matter how long the gestation period was, but it was insignificantly changed in the control group.
CONCLUSIONThe combined treatment with SI and CAA on FGR could improve the condition of the fetus.

Objective To verify the efficiency of a new laparoscopic urethrovesical anastomosis training model by comparing it with the chicken skin model. Methods Chicken posterior trunks and porcine colons were used to construct the training model. The posterior trunk of a chicken was used to simulate a human pelvis, and a 3-mm cloacal stump was used to simulate a human urethral stump. A 15-cm segment of porcine colon with a 1-cm orifice was used to simulate a human bladder or neobladder. An imitation urethrovesical anastomosis was performed with laparoscopic instruments in a laparoscopic training box. Forty trainees with no laparoscopic experience were randomized into 2 groups. The trainees in group A (n=20) practiced using this new model for 8 h, while those in group B (n=20) practiced using the chicken skin model for 8 h. The trainees' skills were assessed using the porcine model before and after training. Results Compared with the chicken skin model, this new training model more accurately resembled the structure and characteristic of human pelvis, urethral stump, and bladder (neobladder). After the training sessions, both groups improved in anastomosis time [GroupA: (64±11)min vs. (123±20)min, P<0.05; Group B: (77±12)min vs. (121±17)min, P<0.05] and quality (Group A: 8.8± 1.0 vs. 3.8 ± 1.2, P<0. 05 ; Group B: 7.7 ± 0.9 vs.3. 7± 1.1, P<0. 05). Compared with trainees in group B, trainees in group A required less time and achieved a higher quality score (P<0.05). Conclusions This new training model can help urologic surgeons to reduce learning curve of this technique and improve their suturing skills. It is an effective, convenient training model for laparoscopic urethrovesical anastomosis.

OBJECTIVETo study the effect of Tangshenkang Granule (TG) containing serum on renal mesangial cells' (RMCs) proliferation and TGF-β1/Smad2/3 pathway in the high glucose condition.
METHODSTwelve SD rats were randomly divided into four groups, i.e., the low dose TG group, the middle dose TG group, the high dose TG group, and the blank control group, 3 in each group. After 7-day gastrogavage via portal vein blood, rats were sacrificed and their serum samples were collected. RMCs were cultured in common rat serum and TG containing serum respectively. The proliferation of mesangial cells was determined by methly thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay to determine the optimal TG containing serum concentration. Expression levels of TGF-β1 mRNA and protein were determined by real time quantitative PCR and ELISA. Smad2/3 protein expression and phosphorylation were determined by Western blot and immunofluorescence.
RESULTSTG containing serum at different doses could inhibit high glucose induced RMC cells' proliferation, TGF-β1 over-expression and Smad2/3 phosphorylation.
CONCLUSIONTG containing serum could inhibit high glucose induced RMC cells' proliferation, and its mechanism might be possibly associated with inhibiting TGF-β1/Smad2/3 signaling pathway.
