Even though some authors have reported on the advantages of early total correction of complex heart disease, for low birth weight premature neonates, most surgeons prefer a multi-step approach to early total correction due to the many problems, such as the technical problems, the cardiopulmonary bypass management and etc. We report here on a successful case of early one-stage total repair of coarctation of the aorta and a ventricular septal defect in a 1,250 gram premature neonate.

Uterine tumor resembling ovarian sex-cord tumor (UTROSCT) were first described by Clemen and Scully in 1976. They are a heterogenous group of uterine neoplasm characterised by pure or predominant histological patterns that resembled sex cord tumors of ovary. Clemen and Scully divide the tumors into two groups according to sex-cord-like structures within tumors (the so-called group I tumors with 50% of sex-cord elements, the so-called group II tumors with almost completely sex-cord-like structures). The histogensis of the sex-cord-like elements is uncertain, the group I tumor appears to be more malignant. We experienced a case of UTROSCT in a 44 years old woman underwent LAVH under tantative diagnosis of uterine myoma and report the case with brief review of literature.

Purpose: The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of suction drains following total hip arthroplasties, by comparing the post-operative results between the group with suction drains and the group without suction drains. Materials and Methods: Eighty-six patients, who underwent primary total hip arthroplasties from June 2001 to June 2004, were divided into two groups: group 1 (48 patients), with suction drains; and group 2 (38 patients), without suction drains. We assessed the perioperative hemoglobin and platelet levels, the amount of total blood loss, the amount of post-operative blood transfusions, post-operative ranges of motion (ROMs, at 6 weeks), wound problems, and general conditions. Results: Although the postoperative hemoglobin level was greater in group 2 than in group 1, there was no statistically significant difference. The amount of total blood loss and blood transfusions in group 1 were statistically greater than in group 2 (p<0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in the post-operative ROMs and wound complications between groups 1 and 2. Conclusion: There were no limitations of hip motion and no wound complications in the patients without suction drains after total hip arthroplasties. However, they required fewer post-operative blood transfusions than did the patients with suction drains, due to less post-operative blood loss; and the absence of a suction drain might prevent retrograde tube infections. In addition, patients without suction drains after total hip arthroplasties seemed to recover better did than those with suction drains. Therefore, suction drains might provide no benefit in total hip arthroplasties.

PURPOSE: To report a case of acute interstitial keratitis as the first clinical sign in a patient with latent syphilis. CASE SUMMARY: A 23-year-old female presented with visual impairment and discomfort in her right eye that developed 3 days earlier. The visual acuity in the right eye was 20/200 and corrected to 20/100, and slit lamp examination showed round sub-epithelial opacification in the central cornea with stromal edema and neovascularization on the cornea of the right eye. Whole body tests including serological tests were performed. Under the suspicion of acute interstitial keratitis, topical antibiotics and steroids were applied 4 times a day initially. Serological tests were reactive for venereal disease research laboratory test (VDRL). Under the suspicion of acute interstitial keratitis due to syphilis, fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption test IgM/IgG (FTA-ABS IgM/IgG) was performed; a positive result for FTA-ABS IgG led to diagnosis of acute interstitial keratitis with latent syphilis. During treatment, systemic doxycycline 200 mg for 4 weeks with topical antibiotics and steroids were administered, the opacity and edema of the cornea regressed after 2 weeks of treatment, and visual acuity in the patient's right eye improved to 20/20. CONCLUSIONS: We report an unusual case of acute interstitial keratitis as the first clinical manifestation of latent syphilis in an immunocompetent patient.

Osteoporosis is a worldwide problem and it mainly affects postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis associated with pregnancy or lactation is a rare condition. The incidence and mechanism of this phenomenon has not been clarified, but it can cause one or more vertebral compression fractures with severe, prolonged back pain in the affected women. We experienced this uncommon case, treated it with percutaneous vertebroplasty. A 35-old-woman visited our hospital with complaints of severe back pain and flank pain 2 months after normal vaginal delivery. She was diagnosed with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures on the T5, 8, 9 and 11 vertebral bodies and we performed percutaneous vertebroplasty on the T8, 9 and 11 vertebrae with a good result. We present here an unusual case of pregnancy-associated compression fractures treated by percutaneous vertebroplasty.
