International Journal of Surgery 2013;40(8):553-556
Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) is a good seed cell, and it is widely used in intervertebral disc tissue engineering research. The improvement of cellular scaffolds, cell factors and further understanding of intervertebral disc (IVD) cell pathophysiology and BMSCs biology have laid the foundation for cell-based therapies for IVD degeneration. However,BMSCs repairing IVD is still in the early stage of research,at present there are still many problems, one of the most prominent is the survival of transplanted cells. This review mainly introduces the current research status of BMSCs in IVD tissue engineering.

Chinese Herbal Medicines 2011;03(1):17-22
The current official quality control approaches meet the challenges from the complexity of herbal medicines. In fact, any herbal medicines containing numerous unknown components, its curative effect usually depends on the whole of herbal medicines,so it is impossible and unnecessary to qualitatively and quantitatively study every component.By investigating the limitations of current quality control approaches for herbal medicines and the difference and similarity in the chemical substantial style as well as quality control pattern of herbal medicines,a new quality control approach for Chinese herbal medicines should be explored and designed. The combination approach of chemical analysis with bioassay is promising to be developed and employed in order to ensure the safety and efficacy of Chinese herbal medicines.

Object To study the optimal conditions and parameters for the enrichment process of scoparone in Yinchenhao Decoction (YCHD) with macroporous resin. Methods With the enrichment degree of scoparone in YCHD as an index, the optimal conditions of the enrichment process were investigated. Results The optimal conditions were that the aqueous extract of YCHD was taken into the macroporous resin column, and kept for 30 min, then the resin was washed by five times of distilled water to get rid of impurity and three — four times of 70% ethanol to elute scoparone. Conclusion The process is feasible to enrich effective ingredient scoparone from YCHD.

To explore the new pattern of Chinese medicine solid preparations (CMSP) in vitro dissolution, a method testing the bio-thermal activity in combination with UPLC was used. Microcalorimetry was used to obtain the characteristic metabolic growth power-time curves and a series of biothermodynamic parameters of the inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus by Yinhuang tablet dissolving solutions at the pH 6.8 (phosphate buffer) dissolution medium at different times. From these results, the cumulative dissolution of Yinhuang tablet based on bio-thermal activity was obtained. The dissolution rates of two components of chlorogenic acid and baicalin were determined by UPLC method. Then f2 similar factor method was used to evaluate the relevance of these two methods. The result showed that f2 values all were more than 50, indicating that there is a good correlation between the two methods of measuring the dissolution rate. It is feasible to determine CMSP in vitro dissolution by using bio-thermal activity, and to provide new evaluation methods for controlling the quality of CMSP.

To be a reference to industrial production of Chinese materia medica (CMM) and modernization of CMM and to summarize several relevant articles and consulte some publications about common key technologies in CMM production. Since 2000, some new technologies have been applied to CMM industrial production, such as SFE, macroporous resin extraction, MST, high-speed centrifugal, ultrasonic extraction, microwave extraction, HSCCC, etc. There are still some problems and difficulties lying in its application to industry. But with the innovation and further research of these new technologies, the application of these technologies to CMM preparation and production may help to expedite the modernization and industrial production of CMM. These technologies will be applied to CMM industrial production with making it more and more vigorous.

Background Dry eye is the most common ocular surface disease.Anterior segment pattern of optical coherent tomography (OCT) is able to be used to assess the tear meniscus directly and accurately. Objective This study was to evaluate the correlation between measuring outcomes of tear meniscus by anterior segment module of OCT with signs and symptoms of dry eye. Methods A retrospective serial cases-observational study was designed.Thirty-six patients who completed Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and got a score more than 20 were enrolled in the First Hospital of Peking University from September to October,2010 under the informed consent. The upper and lower tear meniscus height (U/LTMH,μm),depth (U/LTMD,μm) and cross sectional area (U/LMA,mm2) were measured with the anterior segment module of OCT (RTVue.pitch).A series of clinical tests were performed, including tear film interferometry,break-up time (BUT),fluorescein corneal staining, lissamine green conjunctival staining and Schirmer Ⅰ test (S Ⅰ t).The correlations of measuring outcomes of tear meniscus by anterior segment module of OCT with dry eye-related examinations were analyzed with Spearman correlation coefficients. Results The values of UTMH,UTMD,UMA were (232±56) μm,(156±53) μm,(0.021 ±0.008) mm2,respectively,and the values of LTMH,LTMD,LMA were (222 ± 72) μm,(163 ± 65) μm,(0.020 ± 0.006) mm2,respectively.No significant differences were found in the measuring values between the upper and the lower tear meniscus (all at P>0.05).The quantitative values of tear meniscus were not significantly correlated with the OSDI scores or tear film interferometry grade.Significant correlations were seen between UTMH,UTMD,UMA and BUT (r=0.46,P=0.01 ;r=0.40,P=0.02;r=0.43,P=0.01).LTMH,LTMD,LMA were positively correlated with BUT (r=0.61,P=0.00;r=0.64,P=0.00;r=0.64,P=0.00) and S Ⅰ t (r=0.54,P=0.02 ;r=0.46,P=0.01;r=0.55,P=0.01) as well as negatively correlated with fluorescein cornealstaining (r=-0.37,P=0.04;r=-0.37,P=0.04;r=-0.41,P =0.05) and lissamine green conjunctival staining (r =-0.56,P =0.01 ; r =-0.37,P =0.04 ; r =-0.47,P =0.00).Conclusions Anterior segment module of OCT is an effective approach to the measurement of tear meniscus. The measuring outcomes of anterior segment of OCT are associated with dry eye-related signs.

The patterns of efficient components recognition and quality control for Chinese materia medica (CMM) have been the difficult and hot topics for CMM modernization. To get a radical and significant breakthrough in the investigation on the efficient component recognition and quality control standard for CMM,a tentative idea about efficient component recognition and quality control pattern for CMM based on constituent knock-out/knock-in is initially proposed in this article on the foundation of retrospective and prospective analyses. And its main aim is to provide some creative and practical ideas and methods to recognize the key efficient components of CMM precisely and quickly, and to meet with the requirements that the quality control standards for CMM will be effectiveness-related,quantitative and accurate, controllable and assessable.
