Objective To evaluate the clinical results of phacoemulsification combined with pars plana vitrectomy for eyes with cataract and proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Design Non-controlled retrospective case series study. Participants 123 eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and cataract. Methods Phacoemulsification,posterior chamber intraocular lens (PCIOL) implantation combined with pars plana vitrectomy were done in 123 eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and cataract. Postoperative vision,number of secondary procedures and surgical complications were analyzed. Main Outcome Measures Postoperative visual improvement and associated complications. Results All 123 eyes underwent combined surgery. The average follow-up was 10 months. 99 eyes (81%) experienced postoperative vision improvement of varying degrees. Vision improved by 2 lines or more in 93 eyes (76%). No apparent corneal edema or corneal decompensation were encountered. One patient with type 1 diabetes developed neovascular glaucoma 6 months after surgery. Retinal detachment occurred in 1 eye and reoperated. Vitreous hemorrhage requiring secondary procedure happened in 4 eyes. All 24 eyes (19%) without vision improvement were found to be with diabetic maculopathy. Conclusions Phacoemulsification combined with pars plana vitrectomy can be used as an effective surgical tool to improve visions in patients with PDR and cataract. Objective To compare the postoperative effect of pars plana vitrectomy,phacoemulsification and intraoeular lens (IOL)implantation with silicon oil removed,phacoemulsification and IOL implantation.Design A retrospective case-control study.Par- ticipants 91 cases(104 eyes)of proliferative diabetic retinopathy with tractive retinal detachment or vitreous hemorrhage were per- formed cataract surgery with IOL implantation.Methods All patients were followed up average 6 months,in whom 52 eyes with pars plana vitrectomy,phacoemulsification and IOL implantation(combined group),and the other 52 eyes with silicon oil removed,pha- coemulsification and IOL implantation(sequential group).The differences of the postoperative visual acuity and inflammatory reactions of the anterior chamber between the two groups were analyzed.Main outcome measures Visual acuity and inflammatory reactions of the anterior chamber.Results There were 14/52 eyes with best corrected visual acuity more than 0.1 in combined group and 8/52 eyes in the sequential group after the surgeries(X~2=-6.87,P=0.07) .Corneal edema happened in 16/52 eyes in combined group and 6/52 eyes in sequential group 1 week after the surgeries(X~2=11.53,P=0.001).Keratic precipitate happened in 20/52 eyes in combined group and 9/52 eyes in sequential group after the surgeries(X~2=5.79,P=0.019) .Conclusions The incidence of postoperative anterior chamber in- flammation is higher in Phacoemulsification combined with pars plana vitrectomy group.

Some types of bacteria swim through rotating their flagella. The swimming mechanism of bacteria during flagella bundling and tumble process is analyzed. The effects of body rotation and flagellum′s polymorphic transitions on bundling processes and the wall effect phenomenon are also discussed. Finally, based on dynamics similarity, a new microrobot module is put forward to further studying the flagella swimming phenomena. The research would be very helpful for constructing the bionic swimming robots under the low Reynolds number.

OBJECTIVETo explore the clinical effects of Dynesys system for the treatment of multiple segment lumbar degenerative disease.

METHODSA total of 28 patients with lumbar degenerative disc disease treated with Dynesys system from December 2008 to May 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. There were 16 males and 12 females, aged from 27 to 75 years old with an average of 49.1 years. Thirteen patients with multiple segmental lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion, including L3-L5 in 7 cases, L2-L4 in 1 case and L4-S1 in 5 cases. Fifteen patients with multiple segmental lumbar spinal stenosis, including L3-L5 in 10 cases, L4-L5 in 4 cases and L2-S1 in 1 case. The symptoms of lumbago and (or) intermittent claudication in all patients were treated with conservative treatments for more than 6 months and these methods did not work. Visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to analyze the lumbar and leg pain, imaging data were used to measure the intervertebral space height and intervertebral motion of fixed segment and upper adjacent segment, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) was used to evaluate the clinical effect.

RESULTSAll operations were successful and the patients were followed up from 38 to 65 months with an average 50.6 months. At final follow-up, ODI and VAS of the low back pain and leg pain were (25.10±6.52)%, (1.25±0.70) points and (1.29±0.89) points, respectively and were decreased compared with preoperative (P<0.05). Postoperative intervertebral space heights were increased and intervertebral motions were decreased in fixed segment compared with preoperative (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in intervertebral space heights and intervertebral motions of upper adjacent segment between preoperative and postoperative (P>0.05).

CONCLUSIONDynesys system may obtain long-term clinical curative effect in treating multiple lumbar degenerative disease. It can partially preserve the intervertebral motions of the fixed segments, have little effect on adjacent segments. The long-term clinical effect of Dynesys still need longer time follow-up observation.

OBJECTIVETo study the role of nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB pathway with p38MAPK in Curcuma wenyujin diterpenoid compound C (CDCC) fighting against inflammation and inducing gastric cancer cell apoptosis by stimulating gastric cell SGC7901 with tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha).

METHODSHuman umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and human gastric cancer SGC-7901 cells were in vitro acted by CDCC in different concentrations at different time points. Their growth inhibition ratios were measured by MTT assay. The apoptosis rate of gastric cancer cells was detected by Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining. Nuclear translocation of p65 was detected by cell immunofluorescence. Expression levels of p38MAPK/P-p38MAPK, p65/P-p65, and Caspase 3/P-Caspase 3 were measured by Western blot.

RESULTSCDCC had significant inhibitory effect on the proliferation of SGC-7901. It also could effectively induce the apoptosis of gastric cancer cell SGC-7901. It also could reduce nuclear translocation of p65 in gastric cancer cell SGC-7901. Results of Western blot indicated that expression levels of p38MAPK and p65 were reduced and the expression level of Caspase-3 was elevated along with increased concentrations of CDCC (P<0.05).

CONCLUSIONApoptosis executive protein Caspase 3 activated by regulating p65 via p38MAPK might be one of possible mechanisms for CDCC fighting against inflammation and gastric cancer.

OBJECTIVETo study the effect of Qianyang Recipe (QYR) on the Gan-yang hyperactivity syndrome (GYHS), the blood pressure, and correlated vascular regulatory factors of hypertension rat.

METHODSThirty SD rats were randomly divided into the normal control group, the model group, and the QYR group, ten in each. Hypertension rat model of GYHS was prepared using Aconiti Praeparata Decoction plus ephedrine plus salt water. Rats in the QYR group orally took QYR physic liquor, while distilled water was given to rats in the normal control group and the model group. They were medicated for 28 successive days. The facial temperature, the grip strength, and the systolic pressure were determined once every 7 days. Rats' irritable degree and feather color were observed and recorded once every 14 days. After the last administration the plasma renin (PR), angiotensin II (Ang II), aldosterone (ALD), atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (cGRP) were determined.

RESULTSCompared with the model group of the same phase, the facial temperature of rats in the QYR group significantly decreased on the 14th, 21th and 28th day after administration. The systolic pressure obviously decreased on the 21st day after administration. On the 28th day after administration symptoms such as irritability, dry hair were improved, and the Ang II level decreased. There was significant difference in all these changes (P<0.05, P<0.01).

CONCLUSIONSQYR could relieve GYHS rats' symptoms such as facial hotness, irritability, dry hair, and so on, and decrease the systolic pressure. Decreased Ang II level might be one of its mechanisms.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the protective effects of Yuyin Ruangan Decoction(YRD, traditional Chinese medicine) on experimental hepatic injury in mice.

METHODSThe mice were randomly divided into control group, model group and YRD low, middle and high dose group(n = 11). By ip injection of D-GalN, CCk or thioacetamide (TAA), three models of hepatic injury mice were established to investigate the effects of YRD through detecting the indexes of liver function in serum and, the content of antioxidant system in the hepatic tissue.

RESULTSYRD could decrease the content of alanine aminotransferase (ALT)and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in serum and that of malonaldehyde (MDA) in the hepatic tissue, upregulate the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in the hepatic tissue. Furthermore, the above effects were dosedependent in a certain degree. CoNCLUSION: YRD has some protection effects on the model of experimental hepatic injury in mouse.

OBJECTIVETo study the effects of oxaliplatin combined with low-molecular-weight citrus pectin (LCP) on cell proliferation and apoptosis in human colon carcinoma cell line HT29 in vitro.

METHODSEffects of oxaliplatin alone and oxaliplatin combined with LCP on HT29 cells proliferation were determined by MTT. Coefficient of drug interaction (CDI) was calculated. Influence of oxaliplatin alone and oxaliplatin combined with LCP on HT29 cell apoptosis was determined by fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS). Protein expression change of procaspase-3, 8, 9, PARP was examined by Western blotting.

RESULTSBoth oxaliplatin alone and oxaliplatin combined with LCP could suppress HT29 cell proliferation in both dose- and time-dependent manner. The inhibitory effect of oxaliplatin combined with LCP on HT29 cell proliferation was more significant (P<0.01) with a CDI less than 1. FACS analysis showed that oxaliplatin alone and combination therapy could increase the apoptosis proportion of HT29 cells. After the drug treatment for 6, 24, and 48 hours, the apoptosis rate of oxaliplatin alone group was (9.76±0.47)%, (20.45±0.74)%, (28.70±3.29)%, and apoptotic rate of the combination group was (20.63±0.69)%, (34.35±1.02)%, (49.47±3.04)%, respectively, which was significantly higher as compared to oxaliplatin alone (P<0.01). Both oxaliplatin alone and combination therapy down-regulated expressions of procaspase-3, 9, and PARP protein. Procaspase-3, 9, PARP protein expression in combination group decreased more significantly, while procaspase-8 expression was not significantly different between the two groups.

CONCLUSIONLCP can enhance the ability of oxaliplatin to inhibit cell proliferation and induce apoptosis, which may be associated with the activation of mitochondrial apoptosis pathway.
