Objective To Use three-dimensional Sinite element model analysis for studying the lijmbar biomechanical characterislics following mjcleijs discectomy in a palierrt with lijmbar iritervertebral disc protrvion. Methods A novel CAD method was adopted to acciirately create the Smite teemerrt modtes of L4/5 segment, mdiidmg the modCls for normal disc, degenerated disc, denucleated disc immediatcly after operaSion (denucleated modCl), and denuCleated disc after a longer lime period (scar growth model) Furthermore, the biomechanical parameters of the foUr modtes were examined under SiVe different loads, riamtey, compresSion, fleXion, extemion, forward and backward shear loads. Resutts (1) Under the iiVe loads, the siiffttess of degerterated modCl was ncreased compared with that of the normal disc under all 5 different loads. (2)The sfiffiiess of dermcleated modCl was decreased than that of degerterated disc and ncreased than that of the normal disc. (3)The siiffness of scar growth modte was enhanced and eVen siripassed that of the degerterated modte due to the fact that the scar tissite filled the irrtradisc caVity. (4) The facet contact force was decreased under CleXion, exteniion, and backward shear loads in dermcleated modCl, and were increased under exteniion, forward and backward shear loads in scar growth modCL (5) The backward budge in the degerterated modte wasobViously siighter than that in the rormal modte. The backward bulge of denucleated modte increased to some ejrterrt, and its inner annulus fibrous had inward bUlging. Conclusion NuCleus discectomy has differerrt effects on the biomecharics of liimbar mofion segment in pafierrts at different iime points after operafion. The impacts on liimbar stabliity and postefiior structure are small immediatery after nuCleus discectomy, and the liimbar moiion segmerT may sfiffen and the stress of ariicular process may ncrease after a longer iime period following nuCleus discectomy.

Objective: To study the antiviral constituents from the active fraction of Re-Du-Ning (RDN) Injection. Methods: In this study, the active fraction of RDN Injection was screened by the mice model loaded with restraint stress infected with influenza virus. The chemical constituents were isolated by chromatography on silica gel, ODS, Sephadex LH-20 & Toyopearl HW-40 columns, and reverse phase MPLC & HPLC repeatedly. Their structures were identified by spectral data and physicochemical property. Results: The 95% ethanol eluate of RDN Injection on the macroporous adsorption resin column was proved to be the antivirus active fraction of RDN Injection. Fourteen compounds were isolated and identified as (2E,6S)-8-[α-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1″-6')-β-D-glucopyranosyloxy]- 2,6-dimethylct-2-eno-1,2″-lactone (1), lyoniresinol (2), 5'-methoxyisolariciresinol (3), ent-isolariciresinol (4), (7R,8R)-4,7,9,9'- tetrahydroxy-3,3'-dimethoxy-8-O-4'-neolignan (5), (7S,8R)-4,7,9,9'-tetrahydroxy-3,3'-dimethoxy-8-O-4'-neolignan (6), ceplignan (7), 5'-methoxyceplignan (8), (-)-dihydrodehydrodiconiferyl alcohol (9), (7S,8R)-3,3',5-trimethoxy-4',7-epoxy-8,5'-neolignan-4,9,9'-triol (10), (2-cis, 4-trans)-abscisic acid (11), (2-trans, 4-trans)-abscisic acid (12), (1S,3R,4R,5S,7R,9R)-decane-6-carboxylic acid (13), and (1S,3R,4S,5S,7R,9R)-decane-6-carboxylic acid (14); Among them, compound 1 exhibited the antivirus activity against Dengue virus. Conclusion: Compound 8 is a new compound and the other isolated compounds are reported from RDN Injection for the first time, and compound 1 shows the anti-virus activity against Dengue virus.

As a commonly used Chinese materia medica, Artemisia annua mainly contains sesquiterpenoids, diterpenes, phenylpropionic acids, coumarins, flavonoids, volatile oil, and other chemical compositions. Its pharmacological activities are anti-malaria, anti-tumor, anti-microbial, anti-parasitic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, immunoregulation and so on. The significantly anti-malarial activity has led to its earlier use in the treatment of malaria. In this paper, the chemical constituents and pharmacological activities of A. annua in recent years are reviewed in order to provide a reference for the further development and rational utilization of this plant resource.

Results: Sixteen compounds were isolated and identified as 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (1), 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid methyl ester (2), 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid (3), 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid methyl ester (4), 4,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (5), 4,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid methyl ester (6), 3,5- di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (7), 3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid methyl ester (8), 3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (9), 3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid methyl ester (10), secologanic acid (11), vogeloside (12), 7-epi-vogeloside (13), E-aldosecologanin (14), Z-aldosecologanin (15), and 5H,8H-pyrano[4,3-d] thiazolo[3,2-a] pyridine-3-carboxylic acid (16). Compounds 1-10 showed high efficiency and low toxicity with antivirus activity against RSV. Conclusion: All the isolated compounds are reported from RDN Injection for the first time, and caffeoylquinic acids may be one of antivirus pharmacodynamic material bases of RDN.

In addition, the in vitro activity on influenza virus A (A/PR/8/34 H1N1) of the flavonoids was evaluated in vitro by the method for the detection of anti-influenza virus neuraminidase activity. Results: Through the macroporous adsorption resin, 95% ethanol eluate of RDN Injection was proved to be the antivirus active fraction of RDN Injection. Twenty compounds were obtained and characterized as syringic acid (1), ferulic acid (2), benzoic acid (3), caffeic acid (4), p-hydroxy benzaldehyde (5), vanillin (6), 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy styrene acrylic acid (7), trans-p-hydroxy cinnamic acid (8), trans-o-hydroxy cinnamic acid (9), trans-cinnamic acid (10), 7-hydroxy-6-methoxy coumarin (11), 7-hydroxy-6, 8-dimethoxy coumarin (12), coumarin (13), 3-hydroxy-1, 2-bis (4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1-propanone (14), isorhamnetin (15), quercetin (16), luteolin (17), rutin (18), hyperoside (19), and luteolin-7-O-β-D-glucoside (20). Among them, luteolin exhibited the antivirus activity against Flu A virus. Conclusion: All the isolated compounds are reported from RDN Injection for the first time, and luteolin exhibits the most potential activity against H1N1.

Objective To investigate the current situation of iodine deficiency disorders and the effect of control measures in Sanmenxia city of Henan province, and to formulate targeted control measures for iodine deficiency disorders. Methods In 2008, five villages(offices) were selected according to the east, west, south,north and center position in each county in 6 counties(cities, districts) of Lingbao, Shan, Hubin, Yima, Mianchi,and Lushi in Sanmenxia city. One primary school was selected in each village(office), fifty students aged 8 - 10 in each primary school were randomly selected to check thyroid and their urine and edible salt were collected to detect iodine. Thirty 5th-grade students in each school were selected to carry out the questionnaire survey of health education about iodine deficiency disorders. According to the east, west, south, north and center position, five potable water samples were selected to detect iodine in the village where the primary school was in. Questionnaire survey was also carried out among ten housewives in the village. Thyroid was examined by palpation;ammonium persulfate digestion-arsenic cerium catalytic spectrophotometry(WS/T 107-2006) was used to detect urinary iodine;direct titration(GB/T 13025-1999 ) was used to detect salt iodine;arsenic cerium catalytic spectrophotometry (GB/T 5750.5-2006) was used to detect water iodine. Results One thousand and five hundreds children aged 8 - 10 were analyzed in 6 counties(cities, districts), the rate of goiter was 3.30%(50/1500), the median of urinary iodine was 273.15 μg/L. One thousand and five hundreds salt samples were detected, the coverage rate of iodized salt was 99.93% (1499/1500), the qualified rate of iodized salt was 98.00% (1469/1499), the edible rate of qualified iodized salt was 97.93% (1469/1500), the coverage rate of non-iodized salt was 0.07% (1/1500), the median of salt iodine was 28.9 mg/kg. One hundred and fifty water samples were collected, the median of water iodine was 2.76 μg/L. The pass rate of the questionnaire survey of health education about iodine deficiency disorders was 97.11% (874/900) in students and 98.67% (296/300) in housewives, respectively. Conclusions The prevention and control of iodine deficiency disorders has achieved significant results and the monitoring indicators have reached the national standard for eliminating iodine deficiency disorders in Sanmenxia city.

BACKGROUND: The commonly used culture methods for primary intervertebral disc cells are type Ⅱcol agenase alone digestion method, and type Ⅱ col agenase combined trypin digestion method. However, the acquired cells are few. OBJECTIVE: To acquire nucleus pulposus cells from human degenerative intervertebral disc using a systemic and simplified method. METHODS: Nucleus pulposus cells were isolated and cultured. The morphology of nucleus pulposus cells was observed under inverted phase contrast microscope every day. Primary and subcultured cellsuspension was applied for the determination of cel viability using trypan blue staining. The cel growth was detected with MTT assay. The cel morphology was observed under laser confocal microscopy. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Nucleus pulposus cells were successful y isolated from from human degenerative intervertebral disc using the improved method, and cells were subcultured to passage 3. Primary cells were fusiform shaped, while cells at passage 1 and 2 were triangle or polygonal, which were similar to fibroblasts. When cells almost reached the confluence, the cells showed slabstone-like appearance. Trypan blue staining showed that, the primary cel viability was 99%, and passage 3 cells had 93%-95% viability. The proliferation of nucleus pulposus cells gradual y decreased as the generation increased. Compared with passage 1 cells, passage 2 and 3 cells at logarithmic phase trended to be smoother. The cel morphology observed under laser confocal microscopy was similar to the results under phase contrast microscope. The improved simple method can successful y acquire a variety of cells from human degenerative intervertebral disc, and these cells show fine biological properties.
