Although causative factors are not completely defined, carcinogenesis of colorectal cancer is attributed to multiple genetic alterations. The abnormal expressions of oncogenes are regarded to be responsible for the production of malignant phenotype, subsequent invasion and metastasis. From 63 surgically resectable colorectal adenocarcinoma patients, expression of oncogenes in colorectal cancer tissue was evaluated with immunohistochemical staining methods using monoclonal antibodies to products of the oncogenes. To evaluate the possibility of oncogenes as a prognostic factor, we studied the relationship between the expression of oncogenes and the clinicopathologic findings which are well known prognostic factors. Rates of expression in colorectal cancer tissue were 27% for c-myc, 74.6% for c-Ha-ras and 77.8% for c-erbB-2 oncogenes. The positive rate of c-erbB-2 oncogene was higher in the well differentiated group than in the poorly differentiated group. The rates of expression of c-myc and c-Ha-ras oncogenes were significantly correlated each other. Expression of these oncogenes in colorectal cancer were not correlated with the pathologic stage, location of cancer, DNA ploidy pattern and histologic differentiation except between c-erbB-2 and histologic differentiation. In conclusion, there seems to be a possibility that c-erbB-2 could be used as a prognostic factor of colorectal cancer. However, further and more intensive study seems to be required.

Gastric cancer is the most common gastrointestinal malignancy in Korea. Identification and evaluation ofgastric mass lesions and regional-distant metastases by abdominal CT scan are important for the treatment planningand prognostic implications of gastric cancer patients. Author reviewed CT scan are important for the treatemntplaning and prognostic implications of gastric cancer patients. Author reviewed CT scan of 61 cases of pathologyproven gastric cancer, retrospectively, for recent 20 months from July 1983 to Feb. 1985 at department ofradiology, Korea University, Hae Wha Hospital. The results were as follows: 1. There were 50 cases of advanced adenocarcinoma, 8 cases of early gastric cancer, 2 cases of leiomyosarcoma, and 1 case of lymphoma in total 61cases. 2. The sex ratio of male to female was 2:1. Age distribution was from 24 to 75 year old and peak incidencewas in 6th decade. 3. The most frequent site of involvement with gastric cancer was gastric antrum in 51%. 4. 48of the 50 patients with advanced gastric adenocarcinoma(96%) had a wall thickness greater than 1 cm, and all of 8cases of early gastric cancer had a wall thickness less than 1 cm. Regional lymph node tumor infiltration wasfound in 100% of gastric wall thickness greater than 2.0cm, in 64% of cases of 1.5 to 2.0cm, in 50% of cases of1.9 to 1.5cm, and 12.5% of cases of less than 1.0cm. 5. In a comparison of enlargement of reginal lymph node by CTscan to tumor infiltration of regional lymph node by histology, senitivity was 52%, specificity was 87%, and reliability was 66%. 6. The structures involved by distant metastases of these cases were the retroperitoneallymph node in 15, liver in 8, and pancrease in 3. 7. The diagnostic accuracy of CT staging was considered about68% by correlation of the surgical and histological findings. 8. The CT scan is one of the accurate and simpletool for evaluation of size, shape, extent, as well as distant metastases in the cases of gastric malignancies.

Diagnostic radiologic studies for angiosarcoma are usually non-specific, but selective angiography is notablyexceptional, and there had been a few reports of CT or US featurs of hepatic or splenic angiosarcoma. Intussusception is rare in adult and usually caused by organic lesions, although there is a singnificant numbeof so-called idiopathic cases. The diagnosis of intussusception have been made by pali abdomen, barium enema andsmall bowel series. But recently ultrasound and CT make a contribution to diagnose intussusception. CT is not theprimary means for evaluation a gastrointestinal tract abnormality but also provides yaluable informations inevaluating disorders affecting the hollow viscera of the alimentary tract. CT image of intussusception demonstratea whirl like pattern of bowel loops separated by fatty stripe correlating to the intestinal walls. Abdominal ultrasonogram was used as the initial diagnostic test in 2 cases out of total 4 cases, with abdominal mass ofunknown cause. It revealed a typical pattern, composed of a round or oval mass with central dense echoes andperipheral poor echoes. We report 4 all cases of intussusception in adult who were performed by CT and/orultrasound. All cases were correlated with barium enema examination and/or surgical reports.

PURPOSE: Automated oscillometric blood pressure measurement is not used universally, but has a tendency to be used more frequently in pediatric areas. Reference values of blood pressure by this method were not reported on infants and children under 5 years of age in Korea. This study was performed to study normative blood pressure values by using oscillometric method, presenting 95 percentites on Korean infants and children by age, sex, and weight. METHODS: The subjects were 2,989 normal infants and children from birth to 11 years of age. Blood pressure was measured three times by automated oscillometric method. Percentile values of systolic and diastolic blood pressure were presented according to age, sex and weight. RESULTS: There were no differences in systolic and diastolic blood pressure between male and female in these age groups. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure values increased significantly with increasing age and also with increasing weight. Blood pressure was more correlated with weight than with age. CONCLUSION: Oscillometric blood pressure values in infants and children were presented by age, sex and weight. These normal blood pressure values may be useful in identifying hypertension in Korean children.

PURPOSE: Abdominal CT scans in patients with intraperitoneal fluid were retrospectively studied to identify characteristic features useful for differential diagnosis of various causes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and seventy patients with intraperitoneal fluid collection were classified as categories of hepatic disease, carcinomatosis, and infectious disease. We analyzed sites of fluid collection, the presence of peritoneal thickening, omental and mesenteric fat infiltration, and lymph node enlargment. RESULTS: Intraperitoneal fluid was present in subhepatic space, subphrenic space, paracolic gutter, mesentery, and fossa of the gallbladder in decreasing order of frequency. Fluid in the gallbladder fossa was the most frequent in hepatic diseases. The fluid collection in subhepatic and subphrenic space was less frequent in infectious diseases. Peritoneal thickening was noted in infectious diseases, and carcinomatosis. Omental fat infiltration and enlarged lymph nodes were the most frequent in carcinomatosis (58% and 44%, respectively), whereas, mesenteric fat infiltration and enlarged lymph nodes were the most common in infectious diseases (61%, and 26%, respectively). CONCLUSION: The location of peritoneal fluid collection showed some lesion specific characteristics, and CT features of fat infiltration and enlarged lymph nodes of peritoneum, omentum, and mesentery were helpful for differential diagnosis between carcinomatosis and infectious diseases.

We experienced 3 cases of intrahepatic duct stones detected on plain radiographs. The patients had history of multiple episodes of recurrent cholangitis. Radiographic characteristics of these stones included multiple, round or rectangular radioopaque densities surrounded by calcified rim; these densities showed a branching pattern along the intrahepatic ducts.

Though the incidence of paragonimiasis has been remarkably decreased since 1970, it is still not a rare disease in Korea. Major problems in the diagnosis of pulmonary paragonimiasis on chest radiography are its differentiation from pulmonary tuberculosis and lung cancer. Chest radiographic findings have been described in detail, but little have been reported on CT findings. We reviewed CT findings of 10 patients with pulmonary paragonimiasis. The characteristic CT findings were similar to those on chest radiography, such as air-space consolidation (70%), nodular mass (50%), pleural effusion (40%), cystic lesion (30%), small low density within the mass (30%), linear density (20%), pneumothorax(20%), and burrow track (20%). CT depicted the cystic lesions and the burrow tracks more clearly and showed the small worm-retaining cysts within the mass that were not detectable on chest radiography. In conclusion, all of these CT findings are useful in the diagnosis of pulmonary paragonimiasis especially when differentiation from tuberculosis or lung canceris difficult on chest radiography.
