3.Effect and Path Analysis of Laughter Therapy on Serotonin, Depression and Quality of Life in Middle-aged Women.
Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2015;45(2):221-230
PURPOSE: This study was done to examine how laughter therapy impacts serotonin levels, QOL and depression in middle-aged women and to perform a path analysis for verification of the effects. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study employing a nonequivalent control group and pre-post design was conducted. Participants were 64 middle-aged women (control=14 and experimental=50 in 3 groups according to level of depression). The intervention was conducted five times a week for a period of 2 weeks and the data analysis was conducted using repeated measures ANOVA, ANCOVA and LISREL. RESULTS: Results showed that pre serotonin and QOL in women with severe depression were the lowest. Serotonin in the experimental groups increased after the 10th intervention (p=.006) and the rise was the highest in the group with severe depression (p=.001). Depression in all groups decreased after the 5th intervention (p=.022) and the biggest decline was observed in group with severe depression (p=.007). QOL of the moderate and severe groups increased after the 10th intervention (p=.049), and the increase rate was highest in group with severe depression (p<.006). Path analysis revealed that laughter therapy did not directly affect depression, but its effect was indirectly meditated through serotonin variation (p<.001). CONCLUSION: Results indicate that serotonin activation through laughter therapy can help middle-aged women by lessening depression and providing important grounds for depression control.

Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2008;38(1):180-185
PURPOSE: This study was to investigate the reference accuracy in major nursing journals in Korea. METHODS: The references in articles from eight nursing journals from 2006 were compared with PubMed for authors, year, title, journal, volume, and page accuracy. Four hundred sixty-six references were reviewed. Errors were classified as major or minor and categorized by bibliographic headings (author, title, journal, year, volume and page). RESULTS: Of the 466 references, 223(47.9%) had citation errors. The reference error rates ranged from 28.6% to 58.7%. Most errors occurred in the author element (37.9%), followed by title (20.9%), journal (19.0%), page (13.9%), volume (5.9%), and year (2.4%). CONCLUSION: This study identified a considerable error rate in the references of nursing journals. Inaccuracy of references is a reflection on scholarly work of authors and journals. Authors and Editorial committees are responsible for the accuracy of references.

Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1997;37(5):899-904
PURPOSE: To evaluate the radioloic findings of malignant retroperitoneal fibrosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Post-contrast CT (n=9) and urographic (n=7) findings of nine patients with malignant retroperitoneal fibrosis were retrospectively analyzed. Primary tumors were found to be advanced gastric cancer (n=6), early gastric cancer (n=1), breast cancer (n=1), and cervical cancer (n=1). We analyzed CT findings with regard to the site of soft tissue lesion, ureteral involvement, the presence or absence of hydronephrosis, and distant metastasis. The level and length of ureteral involvement, presence or abscence of ureteral stenosis, and ureteral displacement as seen on urography, were analyzed. RESULTS: On CT scans, enhanced soft tissue lesions (mass, 5 cases; plaque, 4 cases) encircling the abdominal aorta and IVC were noted in all cases. Thickening of the ureteral wall (n=8), hydronephrosis (n=9), and enlarged lymph node (n=5) were also seen. On urography, irregular stenosis and medial displacement of ureters from level L2 to S2 were noted in all cases. The length of ureteral involvement was 4-6.5cm. CONCLUSION: The common CT findings of malignant retroperitoneal fibrosis were enhanced soft tissue lesion encircling the abdominal aorta and IVC, hydronephrosis, and thickening of the ureteral wall. On urography, ureteral stenosis and medial displacement were seen.

Korean Journal of Radiology 2012;13(3):332-341
Iterative decomposition of water and fat with echo asymmetry and the least-squares estimation (IDEAL) is a recently developed method for robust separation of fat and water with very high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) efficiency. In contrast to conventional fat-saturation methods, IDEAL is insensitive to magnetic field (B0 and B1) inhomogeneity. The aim of this study was to illustrate the practical application of the IDEAL technique in reducing metallic artifacts in postoperative patients with metallic hardware. The IDEAL technique can help musculoskeletal radiologists make an accurate diagnosis particularly in musculoskeletal imaging by reducing metallic artifacts, enabling the use of contrast enhancement, improving SNR performance, and providing various modes of MR images with one scan parameter.

PURPOSE: To describe the angiographic findings of patients with recurrent hemoptysis after bronchial artery embolization (BAE) according to the point at which relapse occurred. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 125 patients who underwent BAE due to hemoptysis between 1996 and 2000, we selected 18 of 23 who underwent additional BAE due to recurrent bleeding after initial BAE . Depending on the point at which relapse occurred, they were divided into two groups (I and II, according to whether additional BAE was performed within two weeks of initial BAE or more than two weeks after this). We retrospectively compared the two groups in terms of angiographic findings, number of embolized arteries, and character of feeding arteries at initial and additional BAE. RESULTS: Nine patients in group I (additional BAE: n=10) and nine in group II (additional BAE: n=13) were admitted for recurrent hemoptysis within two weeks of initial BAE and more than two weeks after this, respectively. In group I(n=29) and II(n=31), angiography demonstrated two direct and 27 indirect, and two direct and 29 indirect signs of hemorrhage, respectively. No statistically significant differences were observed (x2=0.005, p=0.945). Among the embolized feeder ressels in group I (n=30) there were 20 bronchial artery and 10 non bronchial systemic collaterals, while for group II(n=35), the corresponding totals were 21 and 14. Again, no statistically significant differences were encountered(x2=0.308; p=0.579). In group I, feeders were newly developed in one case(10%), previously embolized in five(50%), and missed in four(40%), while in group two the corresponding figures were none, twelve(92.3%), and one(7.7%). No significant differences were noted, though the incidence of previously embolized feeders in Group II was very high (x2=5.383, p=0.068). CONCLUSION: Among patients in whom hemoptysis after BAE recurred at different times, the angiographic findings and number of embolized arteries were not significantly different, but differences in the nature of the feeder were noted. Patients in whom hemoptysis recurred more than two weeks after BAE showed more recanalization of previously embolized feeders than those in whom there was recurrence within two weeks.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the ultrasonographic findings of struma ovarii, a rare ovarian tumor composed solely or predominantly of thyroid tissue or the tumor in which hyperthyroidism results from the ovarian thyroid tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using ultrasonography, preoperative ultrasonographic findings of pathologically proven struma ovarii in six patients were retrospectively evaluated for the site, size, margin, nature (cystic, solid, mixed), septa, mural nodule, calcification, fat, and metastasis. The findings were compared with pathologic findings. RESULTS: All six were unilateral, and smooth tumor margins, 5 were mixed cystic and solid tumors, regular septa and scattered echogenic spots within cyst. One of our cystic tumor (bilocular) had hyperechoic mural nodules. Calcification was found in one tumor and no fat. Malignant change or metastasis was not any tumor. CONCLUSION: Most cases of struma ovarii occurred unilaterally within ovarian teratomas in premeno- pausal women, Struma ovarii has a characteristic ultrasonographic appearance of a complex mass of multiple cysts and solid components with scattered echogenic spots within cyst.

Dextran of a low molecular weight (dextran 40) is frequently used to improve regional perfusion after surgery in spite of the potentially serious complications such as noncardiogenic pulmonary edema, oliguric renal failure, and coagulopathy that have been widely reported. Dextran is used to improve cochlear microcirculation in sudden deafness of vascular origin, but the frequency of complications is rarely reported in the field of otolaryngology. We reviewed the literature of a case we experienced in which a pregnant woman, after recovering from pulmonary edema caused by treatment for sudden deafness with dextran, had a successful vaginal delivery.
