Cellular oncogenes are expressed as an intrinsic part of the transformed or neoplastic phenotype. More than 60 of the known cellular oncogenes play a specific role in normal cellular development and differentiation. To examine the correlation between ras oncogene expression and the development of cervical cancer, this study investigated the reactivity of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia(CIN) and carcinoma of the uterine cervix by using anti-ras P21 mouse monoclonal antibody. The expression of ras oncogene significantly increased with the grade of malignancy from 11% in severe dysplasia, 30% in carcinoma in situ, 43% in microinvasive carcinoma, to 53% in invasive cancer. The expression of ras oncogene was not correlated with histologic type, tumor size, and nodal status of cervical cancer. It was concluded that expression of ras oncogene is related to early phase of carcinogenesis and tumor invasion of carcinoma of the uterine cervix.

BACKGROUND: There have been few reports suggesting involvement of mast cell and neutrophil to induce bronchoconstriction in aspirin-sensitive asthrna. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate mast cell and neutrophil activation in pathogenesis of aspirin-sensitive asthma. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We observed changes of serum NCA and MPO levels during L-ASA bronchoprovocation test in 14 subjects with aspirin-sensitive asthma. RESULTS: Serum NCA was significantly increased at 30 min(p=0.01) after the inhalation of L-ASA and then, no significant changes were noted at 240 min (p=0.14). NCA was significantly higher in subjects with late asthmatic responses than in those without it (p=0.04). Serum MPO level tended to increase at 30 min with no statistical significance (p=0.08), and then it significantly decreased at 240 min (p=0.05). There was no significant correlation between serum NCA and MPO level (r=0.22, p=0.58). CONCLUSION: These results support the view that NCA derived from mast cell may contribute to neutrophil recruitment into the airway in aspirin-sensitive asthmatic patients.

Journal of the Korean Society of Virology 1997;27(2):197-208
To investigate the NS4 region of JEV, NS4 cDNA of K94P05 (JEV strain isolated from Korea in 1994) was amplified by RT-PCR and analyzed by sequencing PCR product. Genomic size of NS4 was 1212bp and nucleotide sequence was compared with that of other JEV strains. Nucleotide homology between JaOAr582 and K94P05 was 91.1% and that between Beijing and K94P05 was 89.8%, respectively. But the nucleotide sequence of I region of JaOAr582 and K94P05 showed 97.0% homology and that of Beijing and K94P05 did 95.8% homology. NS4 protein was expressed as a form of fusion protein by a prokaryotic expression system. The induced fusion product showed a lower molecular weight than predicted size and remained insoluble. The NS4 protein might be cleavages by E. coli protease. Concluding above results, high hydrophobicity of the NS4 protein supported the fact that this protein played a role as a membrane component and the poor nucleotide sequence conservativity among JEV strains suggested that this region might be important to adapt each viral growth environment.

6.The Prognostic Significance of Blood and Lymphatic Vessels Invasion of Upper Urinary Tract Transitional Cell Carcinoma.

Korean Journal of Urology 1997;38(6):615-620
The prognostic significance of vascular (blood and lymphatic vessels) invasion was evaluated in a retrospective review of 27 patients with upper urinary tract transitional cell carcinoma from January 1985 to December 1993, who underwent a nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff resection. Vascular invasion was found in 10 patients (37%). The incidence of vascular invasion was well correlated with tumor grade and stage. The incidence of postoperative metastases was significantly higher in the patients with (70%) than without (17.6%) vascular invasion (p<0.05). The survival rate of the patients with vascular invasion was significantly lower than in those without vascular invasion (p<0.01). In multivariate Cox`s regressional analysis the prognostic value of vascular invasion was independent of tumor grade and stage. These results indicate that vascular invasion should predict a more unfavorable outcome in patients with upper urinary tract transitional cell carcinoma as an independent morphological indicator.

8.Local Effect of Psychotherapeutic Agents on Rabbit Penile Corpus Cavernosum.
Hae Young PARK ; Young Nam WOO
Korean Journal of Urology 1996;37(6):627-633
The mechanism of erectile dysfunction associated with psychotherapeutic medication is not well defined. To determine whether psychotherapeutic drugs have a direct effect on penile cavernosal smooth muscle, the activity of 4 drugs from 4 major classes of psychotherapeutic agents, chlorpromazine, thioridazine, haloperidol and amitriptyline, was examined in vitro on isolated rabbit corpus cavernosum. Strips of corpus cavernosum were mounted in organ baths for isometric tension studies. The effect of the drugs on resting tension, their relaxant effect on norepinephrine (NE) precontracted tissue, and their effect on electrical field stimulated (EFS) relaxation of NE precontracted tissue were determined. Incubation with any of the drugs did not affect resting tension compared to a control. All drugs produced a dose-dependent relaxation in NE precontracted tissue which were significantly greater than the water treated control (p<0.0001). None of the drugs inhibited EFS relaxation. These result show that these classes of drugs do not affect the basal tone of the corpus cavernosum. All have intrinsic relaxant properties and none interfere with neurally stimulated relaxation. This study suggests that drugs from these 4 major classes of psychotherapeutic agents do not adversely affect penile cavernosal smooth muscle relaxation at the level of the penis and its associated neural elements. It may be inferred that reports of impotence in patients treated with these classes of drugs more likely reflect a central or primary psychopathologic process rather than a local corpus cavernosum effect.

Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1994;30(4):723-726
PURPOSE: Surgical sponges retained after laparotomy can cause serious problem if they were not be identified in early state. In these circumstances, abdominal CT yields the accurate diagnostic images. The purpose of this report is to present highly indicative findings permitting correct preoperative diagnosis of the gossypiboma. we experienced three cases in which CT showed the images sufficiently characteristic to suggest the correct preoperative diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated retrospectively the radiological images of gossypiboma confirmed by operation. Three patients were admitted due to palpable masses. Two female patients had mdical histories of cesarean sections and a male patient had been operated due to malignant fibrous histiocytoma, previously. RESULTS: Abdominal CT scan of one case revealed huge ovoid hypodense mass with enhanced peripheral rim. Calcific spots and whirl-like stripes were noted within the lesion. Towel was found in pathologic specimen. CT images of two patients showed well-encapsulated, mixed fluid and soft tissue density mass with several gas bubbles. Surgical sponges were found within abscesses. CONCLUSION: The authors conclude that these characteristic CT findings and careful histories of surgery are very useful for correct pre-operative diagnosis and permit the guideline for the optimal plan of the surgical treatment.
