BACKGROUND: Laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation for general anesthesia are potent stimuli to the cardiovascular system due to sympathetic stimulation. The aim of this study was to compare the hemodynamic responses with different administration routes of lidocaine on blood pressure and heart rate changes associated with tracheal intubation. METHODS: Sixty patients were randomly assigned to spray group (Group 1, n=20) received 10% lidocaine 1.5 mg/kg spray to intratracheally immediately before tracheal intubation, IV group (Group 2, n=20) received 2% lidocaine 1.5 mg/kg intravenously before 90 sec tracheal intubation and control group (Group 3, n=20). Anesthesia was induced with thiopental 5 mg/kg IV, vecuronium 0.1 mg/kg and 50% N2O-O2- 2vol % enflurane. After 5 minutes, tracheal intubation was performed. Mean arterial pressure and heart rate were measured at preintubation and immediately postintubation, 1, 3, 5 mins after tracheal intubation. RESULTS:The differences of mean arterial pressure which were measured at preintubation and immediately postintubation and 1 minute after intubation in group 1 were significantly lower than those in other group (p<0.05). The differences of heart rate which measured at preintubation and 1 minute after intubation were lower than those in group 3 (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: For the suppression of sympathetic stimulation following tracheal intubation, 10% lidocaine spray to the laryngotrachea is an effective method to suppress cardiovascular response.

Three cases of lipomas associated with heavy talc deposits are reported in local inhabitants near a fiber glass factory. Pathologic and mineralogical analysis by polarizing microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray diffraction of mass were done. Simultaneously, we performed an epidemiological survey and a mineralogical study of disposed fiber glass from waste site and ground water. All tumors consisted of mature fat tissue containing an abundant birefringent talc fibers and particles under polarized light. The concentrations of the fibers were 494.7, 6.7 and 50.7 million fibers per gram of dry tissue. The fibers were needlelike with rectangular fractured ends, up to 17 micrometer in length and 0.5 micrometer in diameter. EDX and X-ray diffraction analysis of the fibers showed that 71 to 100% of the fibers were magnesium silicate, talc. We also identified magnesium silicate fibers in the fiber glass from the waste site and in the ground water which were similar to talc fibers in lipomas,. We concluded that fibrous talc, a component of fiberglass waste, might be associated with the development of lipomas via unknown exposure route.

Mucocuaneous Lymph Node Syndrome(Kawasaki disease) is a new diseae entity that was first described by Kawasakiin 1967. It occures predominantly in children less than 5yrs old and acute febrile illness, which is mucocutaneousinvolvment associated with swelling of cervical lymph nodes. The coronary artery aneurysms have been revealed 20–30% of patients with Kawsaki disease. The authors report a case of multiple coronary artery aneurysms inKawasaki disease which was diagnosed by a coronary arteriography.

Korean Journal of Pediatrics 2009;52(2):176-180
PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to establish the serum IGF-1 level in newborn infants, and investigate its association with growth and diseases. METHODS: In a retrospective study, serum IGF-1 levels were measured for newborn infants admitted to NICU at Kyungpook University Hospital from March 2007 to July 2007. Birth data, disease history, and hospital course were obtained from medical records. RESULTS: Of 52 blood samples obtained at birth, serum IGF-l levels in 30 preterm infants (31.6+/-27.3 ng/mL) were lower than in 22 full-term infants (53.4+/-40.0 ng/mL; P<0.05). In sick full-term infants, serum IGF-1 levels (46.0+/-40.2 ng/mL) were lower than in healthy full-term infants (64.1+/-39.5 ng/mL; P<0.05). In preterm infants, there were no differences in IGF-1 levels between healthy (33.2+/-23.3 ng/mL) and sick infants (30.6+/-30.4 ng/mL); however, IGF-1 levels in both sick and healthy preterm infants were lower than in healthy full-term infants. Among infants admitted after 8 days of life, serum IGF-1 levels were higher in infants who gained weight (70.8+/-36.2 ng/mL) than in infants who lost weight (13.3+/-19.9 ng/mL; P<0.01); however IGF-1 levels showed no difference between gender or method of delivery. CONCLUSION: The study showed lower IGF-l levels in preterm infants than in full-term infants. Additionally, the IGF-l level in infants with weight loss was lower than in infants with weight gain. These results indicate that serum IGF-1 is associated with gestational age and postnatal growth.

Journal of the Korean Dietetic Association 2005;11(1):11-20
This study was conducted to investigate preference for convenience food and dietary attitude in college students in Seoul and Kyunggi-do area. This study used a questionnaires as instrument tool. Thequestionnaire consisted of socio-demographic characteristics of the subjects, the valuation of preference for convenience, the concern of nutrition, and the dietary attitude. The subject were 199 males and 137 females. The mean age of subjects was 22.4+/-2.3year. The results have been summarized as follows Male students preferred more convenience food than females. Male students liked chicken, ice cream, ramyeon, pizza.hamburgerandfemalestudentslikedchicken, pizza, ice cream, ramyeon.hamburger. The kinds of convenience foods for a substitute meal were ramyeon, hamburger, bread, potato in male group and female group had frequently ramyeon, hamburger, bread, rice cake for a substitute meal. Male students were more likely to eat ramyeon (p<0.01) and purchased sabalmyeon The subjects used to purchase sabalmyeon as main convenience food at convenient store The score of preference for convenience food in male group was higher than female group. The score of attitude toward balanced diet in female group was higher than male group(p<0.01). In scores of concern for nutrition information, balanced diet, and nutrition knowledge, Female group had higher scores of concern for nutrition information, balanced diet, and nutrition knowledge than that of male group (p<0.01).There was no significant difference in the degree of preference for packing types, however, Male group tended to prefer more micro wave type than female group. The persons to affect the consumption of convenience food were friends. There was no significant difference in the time of purchase convenience food, however, Male tended to purchase convenience food at the time of snack than female group. As a results, proper nutritional education and qualitative development of convenience food are required in order to improve the consuming attitude of consumers and their preference for convenience food.

9.Clinical Study of Adequate Doses of Gallamine triethiodide for Endotracheal Intubation .
Hae Ja LIM ; Seong Ho JANG ; Jung Soon SHIN
Korean Journal of Anesthesiology 1983;16(2):124-130
In the modern practice of general anesthesia, endotracheal intubation is routinely used for controlled ventilation. To facilitating intubation, succinlycholine is the most valuable muscle relaxant. But succinylcholine has many untoward reactions such as elevation of intraocular pressure, increased plasma potassium, increased intragastric pressure, bradycardia and the development of postperative muscle pain, etc. Several attempts have study was intended to determine adequate doses of gallamine triethiodide for endotracheal intubation in patients to avoid the development of bradycardis. The authors measured the heart rate just beofre, immediately after and 5 minutes after intubation. The total number of patients in this study was 67, and the patients were divided into five groups: Group 1: consisting of 10 patients, receiving 1.5 mg/kg of gallamine triethiodide. Group 2: of 10 patients, receiving 2.0 mg/kg of gallamine. Group 3: of 22 patients, receiving 2.5 mg/kg of gallamine. Group 4: of 15 patients, receiving 3.0 mg/kg of gallamine. Group 5: of 10 patients, receiving 3.5 mg/kg of gallamine. The authors tried to choose the least difficult intubation after gallamine triethiodide, the amount administered and the patient's reaction to stimulation. The conclusions are summarized as follows: 1) The adequate dose of gallamine triethiodide for endotracheal intubation is 2.5mg/kg. 2) The duraion of action of gallamine triethiodide is dose dependent. 3) Increase of heart rate in each group is significant after gallamine triethiodide.

Korean Journal of Anesthesiology 1990;23(5):811-815
There are many predisposing factors for acute pulmonary edema, namely, left ventricular failure due to cardiac disease or fluid overloading, hypoalbuminemia, pulmonary capillary endothelial damage from bacterial toxins or irritant gases, rare central nervous system injuries pulmonary hyersensitivity reactions, etc. Acute pulmonary edema following operations is a rare complication especially in a patient whose preoperative cardiopulmonary status was within normal limits. We present a case of unilateral pulmonary edema immediately following operation in a 46 year old male patient who had a modified pull-through operation due to tongue cancer and who had no evidence of preoperative cardiopulmonary disorders. The edema was relieved after 9 hours with intensive care of pulmonary edema such as IPPB with Omorphine, diuretics, corticosteroid, asemi-sitting position and frequent tracheal suction.
