The search for tumor-avid agents for use in nuclear medicine imaging is an ongoing field of importance. The purpose of this study was to determine the affinity for radiolabeled vitamin B12 by a wide histologic variety of tumor types in mice. Seventeen different types of tumor were grown subcutaneously in female Balb/C or Balb nu/nu(nude) mice. When the tumors reached about 1 cm in diameter, mice were injected intraperitoneally with 57Co-vitamin B12. Twenty-foul hours later, the mice were sacrificed. Organs and tissues were removed, weighed, and activity per mg determined by gamma counter. Values represented cpm/mg tissue that was normalized to 20 grams body weight for each mouse. A wide variety of tumor types showed significant uptake and concentration of 57Co-vitamin B12, as evidenced by tumor:tissue activity ratios. For many tissues of great importance in terms of background(bone, muscle, blood), the tumor:tissue activity ratios of uptake were high. These data strongly suggest that further efforts to evaluate the utility of radiolabeled adducts of vitamin B12 for clinical use in oncologic imaging are warranted.

Plasma col1 leukemia with motility-related morphological behavior is rarely studied. The plasma cells have variable degrees of cytoplasmic morphologies as dairy Projections, long extensions and pseudopods. These morphological evidences show the papa bility of wide spread and dissemination of disease itself. We present a case of a 38 year old woman who had back pain for 4 months and was diagnosed as a solitary plasmacytoma of the third lumbar vertebra. In spite of resection of the tumor and chemotherapy, the plasmacytoma was disseminated into both breasts and ovaries within less than a year. On her blood examination, we counted 34% of plasma cells in peripheral blood and 91.6% of plasma cells in bone marrow aspiration. Most of them resealed hairy projections and pseudopods of the cytoplasm.

Bartha strain of pseudorabies virus[PRV-Ba] was utilized as a tracer to identify the neuronal axis of rat tongue muscles ; intrinsic muscles and extrinsic muscles, styloglossus, genioglossus, and hyoglossus muscle. After injection of 10 microliter of PRV-Ba into tongue muscles and 48-96 hours survivals, rats were perfused with 4% paraformaldehyde lysine periodate and brains were removed. PRV-Ba were localized in neural circuits by immunohistochemistry employing rabbit anti PRV-Ba as a primary antibody and ABC method. Injection of PRV-Ba into the tongue muscles resulted in uptake and retrograde transport of PRV-Ba in the rat brain. The result showed a circuit specific connection of many nerve cell groups along the time sequence : PRV-Ba immunoreactive cells appeared in hypoglossal nucleus and motor trigeminal nucleus ipsilaterally as seen with conventional tracers. Raphe nucleus, prepositus hypoglossal nucleus, spinal trigeminal nucleus, Al, A5 and facial nucleus of rhombencephalon showed immunoreactivity bilaterally. There were positive neurons in parabrachial nucleus, locus ceruleus, mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus, periaqueductal gray and A7 of mesencephalon and paraventricular nucleus, suprachiasmatic nucleus, organum vasculosum of lamina terminalis of diencephalon. Also positive reactions were showed in amygdala, insular cortex, frontal cortex and subfornical organ in telencephalon. Early immunoreactivity was appeared in hypoglossal nucleus and motor trigeminal nucleus, and there were positive neurons in the nuclei of the medulla oblongate, midbrain, pons, hypothalamus, cerebellum and medial preoptic area at middle stage. Subsequently the viral antigens were found in forebrain cell groups, paraventricular nuclei, suprachiasmatic nucleus, lateral hypothalamic area and primary motor cortex in frontal lobe bilaterally at 80-90hrs postinjection. These data demonstrate that the PRV-Ba can across synapses in the central nervous system with projection specific pattern, and this virus defines many elements of the neural network governing tongue. Therefore PRV-Ba are proved as a excellent neurotracer in the tract-tracing researches.

Holt-Oram Syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by the association of upper-limb abnormalities and congenital heart disease. A woman with no family history of genetic disease underwent antenatal sonography at 27 weeks' menstrual age to screen for fetal anomalies. Ultrasonography revealed abnormalities in the upper limbs. The limb abnormalities included abscence of bilateral thumbs and radius: the left humus was short. Pregnancy termination was performed. The postnatal chromosomal analysis revealed a normal 46XX karyotype and the autopsy finding confirmed the Holt-Oram syndrome. We report a case of Holt-Oram Syndrome in fetus with unaffected parents with brief of the literatures.

Interrupted aortic arch is a extreme type of coarctation of aorta and mostly associated with other cardiac anomalies. Unless there were no proper management, about 90% of babies would be dead in their neonatal period. A 28-year-old nulliparous woman was refered to our hospital for fetal echocardiography at 23 weeks' gestation with an abnormal prenatal ultrasonographic findings. We found interrupted aortic arch(type A), which was located in distal portion of the left subclavian artery, and ventricular septal defect. After 5 months follow up, the baby was vaginally delivered at 40 weeks' gestation. This baby was delivered at 40 weeks' gestation of a male infant with APGAR scores of 8 and 9 at 1 and 5 minutes, respectively. Neonatal echocardiography and electron beam tomography revealed interrupted aortic arch(type A), ventricular septal defect(subaortic type), patent ductus arteriosus, and atrial septal defect(ostium secondum defect). At the 10th day of birth, the infant was performed the operation of end to end anastomosis of desending aorta, patch repair of atrial septal defect, ligation of patent ductus arteriosus, and direct closure of patent foramen ovale.

BACKGROUND: Positron emission tomography(PEFT) using fluorine-18 deoxyglucose(FDG), showing increased FDG uptake and retention in malignant cells, has been proven to be useful in differentiating malignant from benign tissues. We indertook the prospective study to compare the accuracy of the whole-body FDG PET with that of the conventional chest computed tomography(CT) for nodal staging of non-small-cell lung cancers(NSCLC). MATERIAL AND METHOD: FDG PET and contrast enhanced CT were performed in 36 patients with potentially resectable NSCLC. Each Imaging study was evaluated independently, and nodal stations were localized according to the AJCC regional lymph nodes mapping system. Extensive lymph node dissection(1101 nodes) of ipsi- and contralateral mediastinal nodal stations was performed at thoracotomy and/or mediastinoscopy. Image findings were compared with the histopathologic staging results and were analyzed with the McNema test(p) and Kappa value(k). RESULT: The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of CT for ipsilateral mediastinal nodal staging were 38%, 68%, 25%, 79%, and 61%, and those of PET were 88%, 71%, 47%, 95%, and 75%(p>0.05, K=0.29). When analyzed by individual nodal group(superior, aortopulmonary window, and inferior), the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of CT were 27%, 82%, 22%, 85%, and 73%, and those of PET were 60%, 87%, 92%, and 82%(p<0.05, k=0.27). CONCLUSION: FDG PET in addition to CT appears to be superior to CT alone for mediastinal staging of non-small cell lung cancers.
