PURPOSE: To evaluate the therapeutic effect of the combined treatment of excision of the papillae and a supratarsal injection of triamcinolone on refractory vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC). METHODS: Twenty-three eyes of 14 patients with refractory vernal keratoconjunctivitis were included. Patients were treated with the combined excision of papillae and supratarsal injection of triamcinolone. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure, symptoms of itching, tearing, discomfort, secretion and epiphora, and signs including limbal hypertrophy, hyperemia, papilla size, keratitis, corneal neovascularization and blepharitis were evaluated before and two weeks, four weeks, and eight weeks after treatment. The CCL11 level in the tears of each eye were analyzed before and two weeks after treatment. RESULTS: The mean scores of subjective symptoms and objective signs as well as BCVA were significantly improved two weeks after treatment. CCL11 levels in the tears were 389.5+/-474.9 pg/ml before treatment and were undetectable two weeks after treatment. Improvement of symptom and sign parameters was maintained up to eight weeks after treatment. However, seven eyes (30.4%) recurred within two weeks after treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Combined excision of the papillae and a supratarsal injection of triamcinolone may be effective in the treatment of refractory VKC.

Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science 2017;47(4):231-239
PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate the relationship between the vertical position of the implant-abutment interface and marginal bone loss over 3 years using radiological analysis. METHODS: In total, 286 implant surfaces of 143 implants from 61 patients were analyzed. Panoramic radiographic images were taken immediately after implant installation and at 6, 12, and 36 months after loading. The implants were classified into 3 groups based on the vertical position of the implant-abutment interface: group A (above bone level), group B (at bone level), and group C (below bone level). The radiographs were analyzed by a single examiner. RESULTS: Changes in marginal bone levels of 0.99±1.45, 1.13±0.91, and 1.76±0.78 mm were observed at 36 months after loading in groups A, B, and C, respectively, and bone loss was significantly greater in group C than in groups A and B. CONCLUSIONS: The vertical position of the implant-abutment interface may affect marginal bone level change. Marginal bone loss was significantly greater in cases where the implant-abutment interface was positioned below the marginal bone. Further long-term study is required to validate our results.

Annals of Rehabilitation Medicine 2012;36(1):33-38
OBJECTIVE: To determine reliability and clinical use of two methods of migration index (MI) in CP patients with or without hip dysplasia. METHOD: The materials included radiographs of 200 hips of children with cerebral palsy. Conventional anteroposterior radiographs of the pelvis were taken with the child in the supine position with standardized methods. Two rehabilitation doctors measured the migration index using two methods. In the classic method, the lateral margin of the acetabular roof was used as a landmark and in the modified method the lateral margin of the sourcil was used as a landmark. Each rater measured the migration index at three separate times with a time interval of at least one week. Intraclass correlation (ICC) was used to test the inter- and intra-rater reliability. RESULTS: MI shows excellent intra-rater reliability in both the classic and modified methods, but the inter-rater reliability was higher in the classic method than in the modified method. When categorized according to the sourcil classification, inter-rater reliability was higher in the normal sourcil type and lower in the dysplastic sourcil types. CONCLUSION: Generally, the classic method showed higher reliability than the modified method, even though the reliability of the MI measurement was relatively high with both methods.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 2003;41(2):255-257
Eosinophilic pustular folliculitis(EPF) is characterized by recurrent crops of pruritic follicular papules and pustules that occur mainly on the face, trunk, and extremities of young men. EPF in infancy is a rare disorder which reveals the distinctive clinical features consisting of self-limited recurrent papules, pustules, and vesicles appearing in corps, involving mainly or exclusively the scalp. We describe two patients with EPF in infancy. Both patients had self-limited recurrent crops of papules and pustules affecting the scalp only.

Congenital triangular alopecia is an uncommon nonscarring form of alopecia. It presents with isolated alopecic patch at the frontotemporal area of the scalp. Although previously considered congenital, this condition usually is discovered after 2 years of age and, more recently, is thought to be acquired. We report a case of congenital triangular alopecia in a 12 month old female who had the lesion since birth.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the multiplex-PCR and hybrid capture methods for detection of Human papillomavirus (HPV) in uterine cervical swab samples. METHODS: This study determined the HPV infection and its risk group (subtype) in uterine cervical swab samples of 91 Korean women by HPV hybrid capture I and multiplex-PCR method. RESULTS: The prevalence of HPV infection determined by muliplex-PCR was more higher than by hybrid capture method I. Of 65 women with nonspecific uterine cervical lesions, the frequence of HPV-positivity was 14/65 (12 low-risk and 2 high-risk HPV) by hybrid capture method I and was 37/65 (34 low-risk and 3 high- risk HPV) by multiplex-PCR method, respectively. The frequence of high-risk HPV was 2/6 in LSIL, 7/14 in HSIL, 4/6 in uterine cervical cancer by hybrid capture method I, and was 2/6 in LSIL, 8/14 in HSIL, 4/6 in uterine cervical cancer by multiplex-PCR method. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that multiplex-PCR is more sensitive, simple and cost-effective technique than Hybrid-capture I in the detection of HPV infection in the uterine cervix.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 2001;39(9):1022-1024
Sneddon's syndrome is an infrequent neurocutaneous disorder of unknown origin. It is characterized by the combination of livedo reticularis and cerebrovascular accident. We present a 57-year-old male patient with livedo reticularis and cerebrovascular accident. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head showed a sign of acute focal infarctions in the right cerebellar hemisphere and right vermis. He had netlike patterned, mottled bluish discoloration on both legs. Histopathologic finding revealed elongation and fusion of rete ridges and mild thickening of dermal capillaries.

Journal of the Korean Surgical Society 2005;68(5):422-429
PURPOSE: Proangiogenic and antiangiogenic growth factors are related to control of cancer progression and metastasis. The expression of Factor VIII-Related antigen in liver, that is marker of the vascular endothelial cell antigen, may be an indicator of neovascularization. This study aimed to monitor the change of plasma and tissue levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and endostatin in rat liver carcinogenesis and to determine the possibility of the future predictive indicator and antiangiogenic therapy application. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley Rats received 120 ppm concentration diethylnitrosamine (DEN) in drinking water as a carcinogen and in control and experimental groups, sequentially sacrificed by three and seven rats at 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 weeks, respectively. The liver tissue was examined with light microscopy, immunohistochemistry and enzyme immunoassay method. RESULTS: In hepatocarcinogenesis, the preneoplastic nodules appeared at 6 weeks after oral 120 ppm concentration DEN administration. The hepatocellular carcinomas and their pulmonary metastatic foci developed at 15 weeks and 18 weeks, respectively. The immunohistochemical staining of Factor VIII-Related antigen was negative in all sinusoids in normal control livers, but focal or scattered expression in preneoplastic nodules and diffuse expression were found in hepatocellular carcinomas. The tissue levels of VEGF and bFGF were found to have a direct correlation with the plasma levels, but not endostatin. The levels of VEGF and bFGF increased slightly in preneoplastic nodules and markedly elevated in hepatocellular carcinoma. However, there was no significant difference between the levels of VEGF and bFGF and the state of metastasis. There was no significant relation between the levels of endostatin and carcinogenesis and progression of the rat liver. CONCLUSION: From the above results, it could be suggested that VEGF and bFGF may play an important role in initiation and progression of hepatocellular carcinomas in rat liver, but not endostatin. Also, there was no correlation between the levels of VEGF and bFGF and the state of metastasis. Therefore, further study to determine the relationship between the angiogenic regulators and its receptors will serve as a promising research in the predictive indicator and antiangiogenic therapy.
