1.Clinical Study and Recall Antigen Test in Seborrheic Dermatitis.

We studied the age of onset, occupation, inducing or aggravating factors, distribution of skin lesions in 153 patients and recall antigen test in 15 patients of seborrheic dermatitis. The results were as follows : l. Seborrhic dermatitis occurred most frequently at the third decade and the number of patients was 1(0.7%) in the first decade, 41(26.8%) in the second decade, 58(37.9 %) in the third decade, 29(l9.0%) in the fourth decade, 12(7.8%) in the fifth decade, 5(3.3%) in the sixth decade, 4(2.6%) in the seventh decade, and 3(1.9%) in the eighth decade 2. There was family history of seborrheic dermatitis in 40 patients(26.1%) 3. Of the occupations, 48 patients(31.4%) were clerks or office workers, 42 patients (27.5%) were housewives, 23 patients(15.0%) were laborers or factory workers, ll patients(7.2%) were students, 9 patients(5.9%) were managers, and 6 patients(3.9%) were drivers. 4. Inducing or aggravating factors were emotional stress in 75 patrents(49.0%), seasonal change in 53 patients(34.6%), sunlight in 23 patients(15.0%), foods in 15 patients(9.8%), upper respiratory tract infection in 14 patients(9.2%), menstruation in 9 patients(5.9%), and drinking of slcohol in 9 patients(5.9%). 5. I,esions occurred on the scalp in 128 patients(83.7%), on the face in 115 patients (75.2,l6), on the neck in 42 patients(27.5%), on the trunk in 29 patients(19.096), on the intertriginous areas in 12 patients(7.8%), and on the extremities in 6 patients(3.996), 6. The intensity and rate of delayed hypersensitivity reaction in 15 patients of seborrhic dermatitis(1.62+/-0.92mm, 28.67+26.4596) were not significantly decreased than those of control group(1.99+1.08mm, 39.23+/-22.34%) (p>0.05). Anergy and hypoergy were found in 10 patients(6796) with seborrheic dermatitis in contrast to 6 persons(4096) in control group.

2.A Case of Cutis Laxa.

We experienced a case of cutis laxa in a 17-year-old man. The skin showed diminished elasticity with loose folds, wrinkling, and sagging on the abdomen, lower back, and both inner thighs. There was no history of any inflammatory skit diseases prior to the appearance of the wrinkling. Family history revealed to be negative for the skin diseases showing wrinkling and laxity. The biopsy specimen from the skin of the abdomen showed shortened, fragmented elastic fibers in the dermis. The serum copper level was normal(92 ug/dl).

3.A Case of Giant Cell Tumor in Lumbosacral Spinal Canal.

True giant cell tumors are uncommon. They arise most frequently in the long bones and vertebral localization is much less common, particularly in spinal canal. The authors experienced and observed a case of giant cell tumor in lumbosacral spinal canal with a origin of the sacrum. A 25 year old female patient, suffering from severe low back pain associated with radiation pain to posterior aspect of both legs, was diagnosed as a giant cell tumor and treated with total laminectomy with radical removal of mass and radiotherapy resulting in good prognosis. And the literatures were reviewed.

4.Kinetic Analysis of Chlorpromazine on Na-K-ATPase Activity of Rabbit Brain Cortex.

The action of chlorpromazine on Na-K-ATPase activity of rabbit brain homogenate was examined. The results were summarized as the follows: 1. Chlorpromazine inhibited Na-K-ATPase activity in the a dose dependent manner with an estimated I50 of 6s 10(-5)M. 2. Hydrolysis of ATP was linear with time and enzyme concentration with or without cholorpromazine in reaction mixture. 3. Altered pH and activity curves of Na-K-ATPase demonstrated comparable inhibition by chlorpromazine in fuffered acidic, netral and alkaline pH ranges. 4. Kinetic analysis of the effect of chlorpromazine on the various parameters which influence Na-K-ATPase activity revealed that the inhibition was apparently competitive with respect to Na+, and noncompetitive with repect to ATP and K+. Based on these data it is suggested that the inhibition by chlorpromazine is not a consequence of change of affinities of ATP, Mg++ and K+ for the enzyme. Results also indicate that chlorpromazine at the Na+ binding site has an important functional role for the activation of the enzymeby Na+.

5.A Case of Childhood Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans(DFSP) is a rare, distinctive cutsneous tumor originating in the dermis that appears as a raised uninodular or multinodular lesion on the trunk or the proximal extremities. In about 10% of the cases, DFSP arises in childhood and it is rarely evident already at birth. Histopathologically, DFSP shows the chsracteristic storiform and cartwheel patterns, with the fibroblasts arranged radially about a small central hub of fibrous tissue. We report herein a case of childhood DFSP in a 7-year-old boy.

8.Quantitative Determination of Plasmodium Parasitemia by Flow Cytometry and Microscopy.

The traditional light microscopy has limitations for precise growth assays of malaria parasites in culture or for assessment of new compounds for antimalarial activity; the speed and high reproducibility of flow cytometry can overcome these limitations. A flow cytometric method using PicoGreen, a DNA-binding fluorochrome, was developed with optimal precision suitable for performing growth assays of low-parasitemia field isolates. In addition, intra- and inter-person reproducibility of the flow cytometric and the microscopic method were compared in order to quantitatively demonstrate the improved precision. RNase treatment contributed to the precision of the flow cytometric measurements by enhancing the signal-to-noise ratios. Coefficients of variation of the method were smaller than 10% for 0.1% or higher parasitemia samples. The intra- and inter-person coefficients of variation of the flow cytometric method were three to six times smaller than those of the microscopic method. The flow cytometric method developed in this study yielded substantially more precise results than the microscopic method, allowing determination of parasitemia levels of 0.1% or higher, with coefficients of variation smaller than 10%. Thus, the PicoGreen method could be a reliable high sensitivity assay for analysis of low parasitemia samples and might be applied to a high throughput system testing antimalarial drug activity.

Visible fungal colonization on peritoneal dialysis catheter is a rare complication and it was not reported yet in Korea. We here report a case of Alternaria spp. colonization on peritoneal dialysis catheter without peritonitis. A 58-year-old man on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis for 2 years, noticed 3-4 mm sized two black-brown immobile fungal colonization plaque on peritoneal catheter lumen (15 cm distal from catheter exit site). The dialysate effluent was clear and culture for fungus and bacteria was negative. Peritoneal catheter was removed and culture from the plaque revealed saprophytic fungus, Alternaria species. The catheter removal alone was sufficient for the treatment. He is on hemodialysis thereafter.
