OBJECTIVETo analyze the mortality attributable to smoking in different work environments among male citizens in Tianjin, China, and to provide scientific evidence for banning smoking in workplaces and public places.
METHODSThe data of 38 312 male deaths 18-69 years of age in Tianjin from 2010 to 2012 were collected. The risk of death due to lung cancer and cardiovascular diseases attributed to smoking in different work environments was analyzed.
RESULTSAmong the male deaths 18-69 years of age in Tianjin, 22.57% were caused by smoking, and the life scan of smokers was shortened by 5 years on average. The smokers who started smoking at an early age and had high dialy cigarette consumption were at high risk of death. The risk of death due to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases among workers in indoor workshop(OR=1.82,95%CI: 1.55 2.15), indoor office personnel (OR=1.59, 95%CI: 1.39-1.81) Indoor public places (OR=1 .55, 95%U: 1.19 2.01) were higher than outdoor workers (OR=1.23,95%CI: 1.12-1.35). The risk of death due to lung cancer among workers in indoor workshop (OR =3.80,95% CI: 3.03-4.76), indoor office personnel (OR =3.04,95% CI: 2.48-3.73) Indoor public places (OR =4.63,95% CI:3.08-6.96)were higher than outdoor workers (OR 2.57,95% CI:2.22-2.97). The risk of death due to lung cancer and cardiovascular diseases among indoor workers was higher than that among outdoor workers. The risk of death due to lung cancer among indoor workers in public places who started smoking when they were younger than 18 years of age was higher than those among outdoor workers and other indoor workers.
CONCLUSIONSmoking is a major risk factor for mortality among male citizens in Tianjin, and also a key factor for the loss of labor productivity. Indoor workers have a higher risk of mortality than outdoor workers. In order to reduce the mortality attributable to smoking, effective actions should be taken as soon as possible to ban smoking in indoor workplaces.

Chinese Pharmacological Bulletin 2014;(9):1271-1275
Aim To investigate the protective effects of hydrogen sulfide ( H2 S) on focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats and the possible mechanisms. Methods Male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into three groups randomly: sham-operated group, cerebral ischemia/ reperfusion ( I/R) group and sodium hydro-sulfide ( NaHS ) + I/R group. The left temporary middle cerebral artery occlusion ( MCAO ) model was established by the line-embolism method. After rats were suffered 2h/24h ischemia/reperfusion stress, the mortality rate was evaluated, and the nervous function-al defect degree was evaluated by Longe scoring, the volumes of cerebral infarction was evaluated by 2 ,3 ,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride ( TTC) staining, and the expression of P2X7 receptor protein in brain tissue was detected by the immunofluorescence method. Results The mortality rate in NaHS + I/R rats ( 29.41%) was obviously lower than those of I/R group ( 42 . 86%) . The nervous defect scores in NaHS + I/R rats were significant lower than those of I/R group ( P <0.05 ) . The volumes of cerebral infarction in NaHS +I/R group (21.88% ±3.53%) were significant lower than those of I/R group ( 36.71% ±3.73%) ( P <0.01 ) . The results of immunofluorescence showed that the positive expression cells of P2X7 receptor protein in cerebral cortex and hippocampal CA1 area of I/R group were significantly higher than those of sham-op-erated group(P<0. 01). However, compared with I/R group, the positive expression cells of P2X7 receptor protein in cerebral cortex and hippocampal CA1 area of NaHS + I/R group were significantly decreased ( P<0. 01). Conclusions H2S exerts the neuroprotective effect on focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats, and the protective mechanism might be associated with down-regulating the expression of P2X7 receptor protein in brain tissue.

Journal of Clinical Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery 2014;28(10):705-707
OBJECTIVE:
To study the results of TEOAE and AABR hearing screening and follow-up in NICU.
METHOD:
Total 574 cases in NICU were included in this study, all cases received both TEOAE and AABR hearing screening while admission and rescreening when one-month-old. The cases that were abnormal on either test in rescreening were asked to return for diagnostic tests at 3 moths old. The patients who didn't return as required in 3 months were surveyed by call and analyzed.
RESULT:
Among 574 cases, 472 cases passed both TEOAE and AABR hearing screening while admission. While 102 cases had abnormal test results in either screening test. Thirty-three cases returned for follow-up, 13 of which passed rescreening test one month after discharge, the other 20 cases had ABR diagnostic tests after 3 months. Among them, 8 cases had normal hearing, 12 cases had various degree of hearing loss. Sixty-nine cases lost follow-up. The reason of lost follow-up was as follows, parents changed phone number/contact information, parents didn't understand the screening results, parents believe that their children having no need for further testing; parents had retest in other hospitals, parents didn't pay attention to hearing loss because of other severe complicated comorbidities.
CONCLUSION
The passing rate (normal) of TEOAE and AABR hearing screening in NICU was 82.2%, non- passing rate wass 17.8%, and the prevalence of hearing loss was high in those followed cases. Hyperbilirubinemia was the main risk factors of hearing loss in our NICU patients. We reviewed the reason for high rate (67.6%) of losing follow-up.
