Objective To observe the effects of stereotactic implanting depth electrode into the hippocampus on monitoring mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. Methods Thirteen patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsy were included in the present study. The epilcptogenic zone might be located in the hippocampus based on the symptoms and MRI data.Eight-contact depth electrode was implanted into the patients' hippocampus by stereotactic procedures to record the electroencephalogram(EEG).The duration of monitoring lasted for 24-72 hours or more,so as to be sure if the epileptogenic zone was located in the hippocampus, and to provide evidences for surgical resection of epileptic focus. Results Thirteen patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy underwent video electroencephalogram monitoring for 72 hours.Twentynine epileptic seizures in 7 patients were detected.Ictal EEG changes manifested as paroxysmal slow wave or spike and slow waves on the background. The epileptiform discharges started from some electrode points, and then propagated to others or the contralateral electrode. After 1-2 seconds of delay, high amplitude slow waves with the frequency of 3-4 Hz were observed on the ipsilateral scalp EEG. Clinical epileptic seizures were not detected in 6 patients during monitoring, depth electrode showed paroxysmal focal high amplitude slow wave or spike and sharp waves, scalp EEG did not find abnormality.Six of thirteen patients received surgical resection of epileptic foci, the outcome during follow-up of 3-8 months was satisfactory. Conclusions To record hippocampal EEG in patients with intractable epilepsy by stereotactic implanting depth electrode into the hippocampus might be a safe and reliable method. It might provide strong evidences for the diagnosis of patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, and for the location of epilcptogenic zone.

Objective To investigate the effect of equol on ERK mediated signal transduction pathway and to clarify its mechanism of proliferation inhibition on human ovarian carcinoma cell line SKOV-3. Method SKOV-3 cells were treated with 10-8,10-7,10-6,10-5,5?10-5,10-4 mol/L equol for 24,48 and 72h. After pretreatment with 10 ?mol/L U0126 an ERK signaling pathway inhibitor or ICI182,780,estrogen receptor inhibitors for 1h,then treatment with 50 ?mol/L equol for 2h,the cell viability was examined and the expressions of ERK and p-ERK protein were determined using Western blotting. Results Equol was demonstrated to inhibit SKOV-3,proliferation time-and dose-dependently. The expression of p-ERK protein was decreased in dose-dependent manner, while the expression of total ERK was unchanged. Both the single use of U0126,or ICI182,780,and combined with equol could decrease the expression of p-ERK protein. Conclusion Equol could inhibit proliferation in ovarian carcinoma cell lines SKOV-3. Its inhibitory effect appears to be due to down-regulation of p-ERK protein.

Objective To describe an ideal technique to repair full-thickness lower lid marginal defects in a one-stage procedure. Methods The buccal rotation flap and the nasal septal chondromucosal flap were used in one-stage operation to repair full-thickness lower eyelid defect. Results Eleven patients including 6 male patients and 5 female patients underwent lower eyelid reconstruction since January 2000.The age ranged from 29 to 64 years with average 43. Seven patients with full-thickness lower eyelid defect were caused by basal cell carcinoma excision, while four patients were caused by trauma. All the fullthickness lower eyelid defects were reconstructed by using the buccal rotation flap and the nasal septal chondromucosal flap in one-stage operation. All the flaps survived completely after operation. There were no other complications excepting that two patients developed to mild lower eyelid retration after six months. Conclusion The technique consisting of the buccal rotation flap and the nasal septal chondromucosal flap is a simple and useful alternative procedure to close full-thickness defects in the lower eyelid.

Objective To determine the power-time-ablation scope correlogram of a water-cooled single needle electrode radiofrequency (RF) ablation system and to establish a theoretical basis for its practical application. Methods RF ablations were performed using a water-cooled single needle electrode radiofrequency ablation system developed by the authors using fresh ox liver as well as liver and muscles of healthy adult New Zealand white rabbits. The temperature of the ablation area was monitored using a multichannel thermometric system. The maximum ablation scope was determined by detecting the rim at which the temperature was no less than 50 °C.The specific absorption rate (SAR) of the isolated liver tissue was calculated. Results In the treatment voltage range of 100-130V,the process was smooth and steady. No impedance variation was obvious. The maximum diameter of a single ablation was 51 cm.With the treatment voltage at 140-170 V,a larger ablation area could be reached in less time, but eventually the impedance began to increase while the ablation area was no longer expanded. When the treatment voltage reached the range of 180-200 V the impedance almost always increased rapidly out of limits, and the treatment system stopped automatically. The measured SAR value was consistent with the theoretical value.Pathology confirmed that both liver tissue and muscle tissue manifested typical coagulative necrosis. Conclusions The power amplifier, cooling, thermometric and control sections of the RF ablation system worked stably, and the practical ablation effect met the design and clinical treatment requirements.

OBJECTIVE: To prepare podophyllotoxin-loaded solid lipid (PPT-SLN) gel and establish its quality control method. METHODS: With stearic acid, stearylamine, soybean lecithin as cosurfactant and PPT as principal agent, PPT-SLN suspension was prepared by the method of emulsion evaporation and solidification at a low temperature, then prepared into PPT-SLN gel with carbomer used as gel matrix. The physicochemical properties of the preparation were investigated, the content and entrapment efficiency of PPT were determinated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively. The stability of the preparation was investigated as well. RESULTS: PPT-SLN gel appeared as lacte translucent semisolid, with its property and test results all in conformity with the related specification in Chinese Pharmacopoia (2005 edition). The nanoparticles were well-distributed in round or oval shape, with an average particle size of (105.3?34.7) nm, entrapment efficiency of 72.5% and pH value of (7.2?0.3). The preparation was stable within 6 months under room temperature. CONCLUSION: The preparation technology of PPT-SLN gel is feasible and its quality is controlable.

Objective To prepare a completely biological hybrid scaffold for small-diameter vascular tissue engineering using porcine fibrin and decellularized canine carotid artery.MethodsPorcine fibrin was sprayed coating on the external surface of decellularized canine carotid artery to construct completely biological hybrid scaffold for small-diameter vascular tissue engineering. The completely biological hybrid scaffold was evaluated with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining, scanning electron microscopy and biomechanics test.ResultsHistology examination revealed that the porcine fibrin was sprayed coating uniformly on the external surface of decellularized canine carotid artery. Scanning electron microscopy examination confirmed that the external surface of completely biological hybrid scaffold was smooth and uniformly. Compared with fresh canine carotid artery and decellularized artery, the biological hybrid scaffold had similar burst and breaking strength. Furthermore, compared with decellularized artery, the biological hybrid scaffold had higher compliance.ConclusionThe porcine fibrin was sprayed coating uniformly on the external surface of decellularized canine carotid artery to prepare a completely biological hybrid scaffold for small-diameter vascular tissue engineering. The biological hybrid scaffold had appropriate biomechanical properties and had potential to serve as scaffolds for small-diameter vascular tissue engineering.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is an acute cerebrovascular disease with the highest mortality in subtype of stroke, accounting for 15%-20% of all strokes. There was no specific treatment for ICH currently. The mechanism of secondary neurological impairment after ICH remains unclear. Whether it is related to the process of ferroptosis caused by iron deposition is worth to further discuss. This paper reviews the related published articles about ferroptosis, which include mechanisms, inhibition methods and biomarker of ferroptosis.
