OBJECTIVETo study the relationship between serum testosterone levels and the plaque formation of the carotid artery in a population-based cohort of independently living healthy women above 60 years of age.
METHODSAnalysis of the healthy elders from a population-based cohort study in 9 communities of Beijing. Carotid intima-media thickness and atherosclerotic plaques were determined ultrasonographically. Serum testosterone levels were measured by immunoassay. The data were analyzed with ANOVA and logistic regression analysis.
RESULTSThere was an inverse correlation between testosterone and plaque formation in old females (P < 0.01), while no association was found in males. Female with testosterone levels in the lowest quartile (< 0.49 nmol/L) had more risk of plaque formation (OR = 3.805, P < 0.01) after adjusted with age and other traditional factors of atherosclerosis.
CONCLUSIONTestosterone concentrations are negatively associated with carotid artery atherosclerosis in old women in Beijing, experimental and prospective studies are needed to determine the possible therapeutic role of testosterone in atherosclerosis.

Microbiology 1992;0(06):-
The hemolysin production of 19 strains of Streptococcus spp. isolated from pigs in the Jiangsu and Shanghai regions in recent years were examined. Eight isolates of Streptococcus suis type 2 from Jiangsu showed weak hemolysis on blood agar, but a stronger reaction in Todd-Hewitt broth(THB). The hemolysin belonged to the group of thiol-activated hemolysins. Nine strains of Streptoccus equi subsp. zooepidemicus showed strong hemolysis on blood agar and in THB containing 5% new-born calf serum, but no hemolysis in THB alone. This hemolysin was similar to streptolysin S(SLS). Another two isolates were atypical members of Lancefield group C Streptococcus and showed strong hemolysis on blood agar and in THB with 5% new-born calf serum, but the hemolysin was unlike either streptolysin O or SLS.
6.The Roles of Drug-Fluting Stents in the Prevention and Treatment of Restenosis After Extracranial and Intracranial Stent Angioplasty

Now symptomatic extracranial and intracranial stenting usually uses bare metal stents, but the incidence of restenosis is higher. The studies of drug-eluting stems for the treatment of coronary atherosclerosis have suggested that the incidence of restenosis decreases significantly. Although extracranial and intracranial drug-eluting stem placement appears to be safe, further large, prospective, randomized, controlled trials are needed to demonstrate its safety and effectiveness.

Objective To determine the effect of mild hypothermia on neonatal piglet cardiac hemodynamic function after hypoxia-ischemia (HI).Method Twenty five 7-day-old piglets were used for hypoxic ischemic brain damage (HIBD) model by the method of temporary occlusion of the bilateral carotid arteries and followed by mechanical ventilation with low concentration of oxygen (FiO_2=6%) for 30 minutes. The piglets were randomly divided into three groups:group A (normothermia with body temperature to 39℃,n=9),group B (body temperature to 36℃for 72 hours,n=8),and group C (body temperature to 34℃for 72 hours,n=8).Mild hypothermia was initiated at 4 hours after HI,the systolic and diastole function were evaluated by Doppler echocardiography at pre-HI,post-Hi 4 hours and post-HI 72 hours. Results There were no significant differences in left ventrieular ejection time/left ventrieular ejection time (LPEP/LVEF),right ventricular ejection acceleration time/right ventricular ejection time (RACT/RVET) and CO at post-HI with hypothermia 72 hours in three groups, but the heart rate decreased in B and group C group.Compared with nonnothermia, mild hypothermia treatment showed no significant differences in MAP,LPEP/LVET,RACT/RVET,CO,SV at post-HI with hypothermia 72 hours. Conclusions Body temperature decreased by 3~5℃for 72 hours will not aggravate hemodynamic abnormity.

Objective To discuss the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of delayed traumatic intracerebral hematoma. Methods The clinic data of traumatic delayed intracranial hematoma patients in this hospital were retro- spectively analyzed.According to clinic observation and CT re-examination,47 cases were diagnosed as delayed trau- matic intracranial hematoma(45 cases by operative treatment, and the other 2 by conservative treatment). Results There were 21 cases of recovery,10 cases of slight disability,8 cases of severe disability,8 cases of death. The total mortality rate was 17 %.Conclusion Brain contusion, subarachnoid hemorrhage and skull base fracture were impor- tant factors of DTICH.Fine-observation and prompt CT re-examination offered excellent results for DTICH.

10.Research progress in mild hypothermia treatment of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
Chinese Journal of Contemporary Pediatrics 2013;15(10):918-922
Randomized controlled trials have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of mild hypothermia in the treatment of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), which can reduce mortality or the incidence of severe neurological sequelae. Mild hypothermia has been used in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) as a routine treatment method for neonatal HIE in many developed countries, and it is increasingly applied in some NICUs in China. However, 40%-50% of the neonates treated with mild hypothermia die or develop severe neurological disability. Thus, to achieve the best neuroprotective effect, issues such as selection of patients with indications for mild hypothermia, cooling method, optimal time for mild hypothermia, duration of mild hypothermia, optimal target temperature, and the safety and long-term effects of mild hypothermia combined with other therapies, need to be further discussed. This article reviews the latest progress in clinical research on these issues.
