OBJECTIVETo study the biomechanical characteristics of Ni-Ti shape-memory alloy-enclosed interlocking intramedular nail Ni-Ti En for clinical application.
METHODSSix transverse fractures were induced in 6 fresh humeral shafts and fixed with Ni-Ti En, plate, interlocking intramedullary nail, and Ender nail, respectively. The specimens then underwent stress analysis for comparison of the bending strength, twisting force, and flexibility.
RESULTSThe bending strength of Ni-Ti En was not significantly different from that of the plate and better than ender's nail; the twisting force of the interlocking intramedullary nail was comparable with the plate, but better than Ender nail.
CONCLUSIONNi-Ti Enpossess good biomechanical property to meet the demand of osteosynthesis, and its less stress protection, freedom of distant nail locking, flexibility and stable fixation may accelerate fracture healing.

OBJECTIVETo study the expression of leukocyte-associated Ig-like receptor-1(LAIR-1) in children with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), in order to explore the possible role of LAIR-1 in the pathogenesis of childhood ITP.
METHODSExpression levels of LAIR-1 on CD4(+) T cells, CD8(+) T cells and CD19(+)CD20(+) B cells of peripheral blood were measured in 40 children with ITP by flow cytometry. Serum level of solubility LAIR-1 (sLAIR-1) was measured using ELISA. Real-time PCR was used to measure LAIR-1 mRNA expression. Thirty-two healthy children served as the control group.
RESULTSThe percentages of CD19(+)CD20(+) B cells in the ITP group were significantly higher than in the control group (P<0.05). In contrast, the percentage of CD4(+) T cells in the ITP group was significantly lower than in the control group (P<0.05). The expression levels of LAIR-1 on CD4(+) T cells and CD8(+) T cells were significantly lower in the ITP group than in the control group (P<0.05). Serum sLAIR-1 level and LAIR-1 mRNA expression in the ITP group significantly increased compared with the control group (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONSLAIR-1 expression on CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells decreases and serum sLAIR-1 level increases in children with ITP, suggesting that LAIR-1 may play an important role in immune imbalance in these children.

BACKGROUNDTo study the relationship of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and T cell lymphoma.
METHODSSixty cases of T cell lymphomas were examined for the presence of EBV using in situ hybridization for EBV encoded RNA (EBERs).
RESULTSEBERs were detected in tumor cells in 37(69.8%) of 53 cases with peripheral T cell lymphoma, but in none of seven cases of precursor T lymphoblastic lymphoma. The total detected EBERs were 37(61.6%) in 60 cases of T cell lymphomas. By Revised European-American Lymphoma(REAL) classification, EBERs were detected in 2/2 angioimmuno-blastic T cell lymphoma,17/18 angiocentric lymphoma, 4/6 anaplastic large cell lymphoma and 14/27 peripheral T cell lymphoma, unspecified (51.9%). The frequency of EBERs among the extranodal peripheral T cell lymphoma was higher than the nodal (P less than 0.01) there was no significant correlation with the sex, age and clinical stage.
CONCLUSIONSThis study indicated that high incidence of EBV was observed in peripheral T cell lymphoma, with predilection for angiocentric lymphoma and extranodal presentation.

AIMTo explore the role of novel protein kinases C (nPKCs) in the development of cerebral hypoxic preconditioning.
METHODSBy using the mice model of hypoxic preconditioning, which was established before in our lab, the biochemistry techniques of SDS-PAGE and Western blot were applied to observe the effects of repetitive hypoxic exposure (H0-H4) on nPKCs (nPKCepsilon, delta, eta, mu and theta) membrane translocation in hippocampus and cortex.
RESULTSnPKCepsilon membrane translocation was increased in response to the hypoxic exposure times in the hippocampus (H0: 41.6% +/- 1.4% vs. H1-H4: 46.9% +/- 4.5%, 52.7% +/- 3.9%, 58.8% +/- 2.7% and 61.3% +/- 3.7%) and cortex (H0: 38.4% +/- 4.5% vs. 42.4% +/- 5.0%, 48.7% +/- 6.5%, 55.3% +/- 8.9% and 61.2% +/- 10.2%) of mice, and there were statistic significances among H2, H3 and H4 in hippocampus, and H3 and H4 in cortex respectively (P < 0.01). But for nPKCdelta, eta, mu and theta membrane translocation, there were no any significant changes in hippocampus and cortex of hypoxic preconditioned mice.
CONCLUSIONnPKCepsilon may play an important role in the development of cerebral hypoxic preconditioning, but it need more evidence to prove.

[Objective] To investigate the discrimination status among AIDS medical staff towards HIV/AIDS patients in XuHui district and analyze the factors influencing the discriminary attitude and be -havior will of medical staff . [ Methods] A total of 133 AIDS medical staff from 31 medical institutions were investigated by means of a self -designed questionnaire in Xuhui District . [ Results] In the atti-tude to PLWHA, the terms in the questionnaire with the highest and the lowest discrimination score were“people living with HIV should be sent to infection hospital” and “the privacy of people living with HIV should be respected”, whose scores were 1.59 and 0.03 points. In the behavior will to PLWHA, the terms with the highest and the lowest discrimination score were “not to shop from people living with HIV” and“willing to communicate with acquaintances infected with HIV”, whose scores were 1.05 and 0.48 points. The difference in discrimination score was female >male and clinical post >test post >healthcare post . [ Conclusion] Gender and occupation are the main factors affecting discrimination scores .The attitude and behavior will to PLWHA are inconsistent in some places .Measures should be taken to reduce PLWHA discrimination , such as effectively implementing the “AIDS prevention and control regulation”, strengthe-ning the occupation moral training of medical staff , and enhancing the occupation protection policy and training.
