Journal of Environment and Health 1992;0(02):-
Objective To study the methods of preparing samples, analyse free radical in smoke of cigarette and the relationship between free radical and the other harmful components in the cigarette smoke. Methods The contents of two types of free radical in smoke of 13 kinds of cigarettes were determined with electron spim resonance(ESR) and the self-made equipment. Results The analytic results showed that the main component was the free radical in gas state in all cigarette samples and it was about 10-30 times higher than the content of free radical in solid state. The content of free radical in gas state of cigarette made in China was lower than that made in foreign country. Conclusion The analysis method using ESR and the self-made equipment will be easily used in the related experiment; The level of free radical in gas and solid state is positively related to the level of tar and nicotine in the cigarette sample of same trademark but it is not the same in the samples of different trademark. Therefore, we can not to infer the content of free radial in cigarette smoke by the content of tar and nicotine in it,especially for the content of free radial in gas state. Using charcoal filter is benefit to reduce the level of free radical in cigarette smoke.

Objective To study on the efficacy and safety of treating achalasia by gastroscopic balloon dilation under anesthesia. Methods Fifteen patients with achalasia were given intravenous propofol and midazolam before dilation. Patient's feeling or distress and operative duration were recorded. The changes of blood pressure (BP) , heart rate ( HR) and blood oxygen saturation ( SpO2 ) were also recorded and analyzed. Results Patients did not complain of any discomfort or pain during gastroscopy. The time of recovery from anesthesia was 17 -27(23. 2) minutes. There were significant changes in clinical scores before and after dilation ( P

Objective To draw up the Chinese Words Reading Test and try to use it as way of premorbid intelligence. Methods 373 health middle-elderly people as study subjects, from five communities in Shanghai city, are between age 55 and 85, and their edueational background is junior high school or above, and their MMSE scores are more than 24 points. 34 of the cases have finished CWRT and Weehsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) Chinese Revised edition. The main analysis indicators of CWRT: CWRT-Ⅰ for number of right reading 50 characters and CWRT-Ⅱ for 50 words. Results Both CWRT-Ⅰ and CWRT-Ⅱ are relative to education level( r = 0.462,0.489, and P < 0.01), while the correlation with age is not signifieant. Performance of the male participants are better than that of the female. The coefficient of correlation between scores of CWRT-Ⅰ and full IQ of WAIS is 0.79. The mean and standard deviation of scores of CWRT-Ⅰ and CWRT-Ⅱ for the normal elder people with different education levels and gender are provided. Conclusion CWRT is not very diffieuh or easy, and is highly relative to score of WAIS. So it can be used as an evaluating tool for premorbid intelligence.

Objective To assess the quality of life(QOL)in patients with stroke at the acute stage, and to determine whether all the dimensions of the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey(SF-36)are applicable to the stroke patients. Methods Fifty stroke patients at the acute stage were studied. The SF-36 was employed to assess the quality of life of the patients, and a self-designed questionnaire was used to record the general information of them. The data obtained from the patients was compared with the Chinese norm reported in literature. We also calculated the percentage of subjects who achieved the lowest possible score(score of 0,floor effect)and the percentage of subjects who achieved the highest possible score(score of 100,ceiling effect). Results The QOL of the acute stroke patients,as reflected by scores with all the dimensions of the SF-36 scale, was significantly reduced when compared with the norm data(P

Objective To observe the therapeutic effects of treating shingles with venesection and cuppingplus Yunnan White Powder external application and to observe the effect of mental intervention and nursing on clinical healing time. Methods 100 cases with shingles were randomly recruited into two treatment groups(Group A and Group B)and a control group. Both treatment groups were treated with venesection and cupping plus yunnan white powder external application,in addition, group B was treated with mental intervention and nursing care. The control group was treated with Aciclovir ointment. Results As compared with the control group, both treatment groups showed significant difierences in the time of relieving pain, removing swell, forming a scab, and healing(P<0.01);Compared with group A,group B showed a shortened healing time with P<0.05.Conclusion It is effective to treat shingles with venesection and cupping plus yunnan white powder.Mental Intervention and nursing can promote the healing time and improve the degree of satisfaction.

Chinese Mental Health Journal 2002;0(11):-
Objective:To compare the cognitive functions between elderly of Shanghai, Hong Kong and San Diego.Method:104 elderly in Shanghai was evaluated by the Chinese version of Mattis Dementia Rating Scale (DRS)and mini-mental state examination (MMSE), the results were compared with that of 104 persons in Hong Kong and 150 elderly participants in San Diago.Result:Compared with Hong Kong participants, Shanghai participants performed significantly higher on one item, but there were significantly differences in five items between Shanghai participants and the San Diego participants which age and education were matched. Conclusion:Some DRS subscales or individual items may be susceptible to cultural differences.

Aim DNA vaccinating BALB/c mice with the constructed recombinant plasmid, pcDNA3, containing ROP1 gene from Toxoplasma gondii to observe the effect on the production of the cytokines, IFN- γ、 IL - 2 , and NO in the immunized mice. Methods Large-scale preparation of plasmid DNA by alkaline lysis, the DNA were injected through muscles of left leg in each mouse at the dosage of 100μg. A booster vaccine was given at the same dosage after two weeks. Control groups were injected with pcDNA3 blank plasmid and normal saline respectively. After 30,50 and 70 days of the booster injection, following tests were carried out 3 times separately :the serum IFN-γand IL-2 were detected by sandwich ELISA;the NO was detected by enzyme assay. Results The 3 times detected results of IFN-γγ、IL-2 and NO were significant higher in the vaccinated group than that of in control groups and the contents were increased with the vaccinated time prolonged. Conclusion The IFN - γγ、 IL - 2 and NO were produced by vaccinating BALB/c mice with the recombinant plasmid, pcROP1.
