Objective To investigate the prevalence of year-round respiratory viral infection in children with lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI), and the relationship between respiratory viral infection and allergen sensitization in exacerbating asthma. Methods A total of 231 hospitalized children with acute LRTI were investigated from May 2013 to April 2014. The 5 most common respiratory viruses were isolated from nasopharyngeal aspirate using multiplex reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), adenovirus (AV), parainfluenza virus (PIV), influenza virus (IFV) and rhinovirus (RV). Atopic sensitization was defined if more than 1 serum specific immunoglobulin E level measured using immunofluorescence experiment was over 0.35 IU/mL. Results RSV was the most common pathogen of bronchiolitis in hospitalized children through the year. RV or IFV infections were more prevalent in asthma exacerbations compared to other LRTIs. AV was more likely to cause pneumonia. RV and IFV were associated with asthma exacerbations in children with atopic sensitization, but not in nonatopic children. Conclusion RV and IFV are associated with hospitalization for asthma exacerbation in children with atopic sensitization.

BACKGROUND:There are a lot of reports about the association between estrogen receptor α polymorphism and osteoarthritis susceptibility, but the results are stil some controversial. OBJECTIVE:To investigate the relationship between the estrogen receptor α gene PvuII, XbaI site polymorphisms and genetic susceptibility of osteoarthritis. METHODS: A computer-based search of PubMed, web of science, Wanfang, CNKI, Weipu and China Biology Medicine Disc was performed for the published case-control studies addressing the association between estrogen receptor α gene PvuII, XbaI site polymorphism and osteoarthritis susceptibility. Odds radio (OR) and 95% confidence interval were used to analyze the correlation between estrogen receptor α gene PvuII, XbaI site polymorphism and osteoarthritis. Fixed or random effect models were selected for pooledOR calculation. Publication bias was assessed. Al statistical analysis was constructed with Revman5.1 software. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Nine case-control studies including 3 228 cases of osteoarthritis and 6 327 healthy controls were included. Overal, the pooledOR values of PvuII loci aleles and genotypes (Cvs. T; CTvs. TT; CCvs. TT; CT+CCvs. TT; CCvs. CT+TT) were less than 1; the pooled OR values of Asian which grouped by region were greater than 1 (except CTvs. TT); the pooledOR values of Europe and the Americas were less than 1. The pooledOR values of XbaI loci aleles and genotypes (Gvs.A; GAvs. AA; GGvs. AA; GA+GGvs. AA; GGvs. GA+AA) were less than 1; the pooledOR values of Asian which grouped by region were less than 1; the pooledOR value of Europe and the Americas were less than 1 (except GGvs.GA+AA). Estrogen receptor α gene PvuII, XbaI site polymorphism is not associated with osteoarthritis susceptibility. However, the susceptibility of PvuII loci in the Asian is a little higher compared with that of the Europeans and American population. On the contrary, the susceptibility of XbaI loci in the recessive genetic model of Europeans and American population is a little higher compared with that of the Asian, suggesting a possible role of ethnic differences in genetic backgrounds.

Objective To investigate the clinical significance of circumferential aneurysmal wall enhancement (CAWE)in high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging. Methods The imaging and clinical data of 41 patients with intracranial aneurysm underwent gadolinium-enhanced 3. 0 T HR-MRI from October 2014 to July 2015 were analyzed retrospectively. Two experienced neurovascular radiologists read the vascular neuroimagings independently and determined whether the intracranial aneurysm walls of the patents had CAWE. Twenty-five patients had unstable intracranial aneurysms and 16 had stable intracranial aneurysms. The consistency of the diagnostic results of the 2 radiologists was evaluated by the Kappa test. The CAWE,number, location, size and the imaging features of intracranial aneurysms,as well as gender, age, smoking history, drinking history, hypertension and diabetes of clinical risk factors of the patients in both groups were compared. The comparison between groups was conducted by using the chi-square test. Results A total of 47 intracranial aneurysms were detected in 41 patients, including 29 unstable intracranial aneurysms (a unstable aneurysm group)and 18 stable intracranial aneurysms (a stable aneurysm group). The consistency of CAWE results diagnosed by 2 experienced neurovascular radiologists was better (κ =0. 828;95%CI 0. 668 -0. 989). CAWE of the unstable intracranial aneurysms was significantly more than those of the stable intracranial aneurysms. There was significant difference (75. 9%[22 / 29]vs. 33. 33%[6 / 18];χ2 = 8. 341,P = 0. 004). The age of the patients with unstable intracranial aneurysm was younger than 60 years;it was more than those with stable intracranial aneurysm. There was significant difference (68%[17/ 25]vs. 31. 25%[5/ 16];χ2 = 5. 299,P = 0. 021),while there were no significant differences in the imaging features, including the number, location, size,as well as the clinical risk factors, including gender, smoking history, drinking history, hypertension, and diabetes between the 2 groups (P > 0. 05). Conclusion CAWE is significantly more common in unstable intracranial aneurysms. It can differentiate the symptomatic, morphological changes of ruptured intracranial aneurysms between the stable intracranial aneurysms.

AIM: To investigate the effects of epigallocatechin-3-gallate(EGCG) on 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion(MPP+)-induced apoptosis in rat pheochromocytoma(PC12) cells and to explore the relationships between its roles of anti-oxidation,intracellular calcium homeostasis and anti-apoptosis.METHODS: Rat PC12 cells were pretreated with vehicle control or EGCG(10,50,and 100 ?mol/L) for 30 min, then cultured with MPP+(900 ?mol/L) for 24 h.The cell viability and apoptosis were monitored by MTT assay and flow cytometry using Annexin V and PI.The activity of intracellular reactive oxygen species(ROS),contents of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and malondialdehyde(MDA),cytoplasmic Ca2+ density and apoptotic morphology of mitochondria were examined by fluorescent plate-based assays, confocal microscope, and transmission electron microscope, respectively.RESULTS: MPP+ impaired the PC12 cells in a concentration-dependent pattern and induced apoptosis of the cells(31% versus control).Compared with the control, the cells pretreated with EGCG showed markedly higher rate of viability and lower apoptosis.Meanwhile,EGCG pretreatment significantly increased the SOD activity and decreased the levels of MDA and ROS.Interestingly,EGCG also decreased the concentration of cytoplasmic Ca2+ and improved the morphology of mitochondria.CONCLUSION: EGCG exhibits inhibitory effects on MPP+-induced apoptosis in rat PC12 cells, which is possibly associated with increasing the cell ability of anti-oxidation and decreasing the concentration of cytoplasmic Ca2+.
