OBJECTIVEThis study aims to determine the effect of fluoride concentration on the corrosion behavior of cobalt-chromium alloy fabricated by two different technology processes in a simulated oral environment.
METHODSA total of 15 specimens were employed with selective laser melting (SLM) and another 15 for traditional casting (Cast) in cobalt-chromium alloy powders and blocks with the same material composition. The corrosion behavior of the specimens was studied by potentiodynamic polarization test under different oral environments with varying solubilities of fluorine (0, 0.05%, and 0.20% for each) in acid artificial saliva (pH = 5.0). The specimens were soaked in fluorine for 24 h, and the surface microstructure was observed under a field emission scanning electron microscope after immersing the specimens in the test solution at constant temperature.
RESULTSThe corrosion potential (Ecorr) value of the cobalt-chromium alloy cast decreased with increasing fluoride concentration in acidic artificial saliva. The Ecorr, Icorr, and Rp values of the cobalt-chromium alloy fabricated by two different technology processes changed significantly when the fluoride concentration was 0.20% (P < 0.05). The Ecorr, Icorr, and Rp values of the cobalt-chromium alloy fabricated by two different technology processes exhibited a statistically significant difference. The Icorr value of the cobalt-chromium alloy cast was higher than that in the SLM group cobalt-chromium alloy when the fluoride concentration was 0.20% (P < 0.05). The Ecorr, tRp alues of the cobalt-chromium alloy cast were lower htan those of the SLM group cobalt-chromium alloy when the fluoride concentration was 0.20% (P< 0 .05).
CONCLUSIONFluoride ions adversely affected the corrosion resistance of the cobalt-chromium alloy fabricated by two different technology processes. The corrosion resistance of the cobalt-chromium alloy cast was worse than that of the SLM group cobalt-chromium alloy when the fluoride concentration was 0.20%.

Objective To study the effects of sodium bicarbonate (SB) on resuscitation in swine model of asphyxiation cardiac arrest (CA).Methods Thirty-two healthy miniature pigs were randomized (ramdom number) into two groups, the SB group (n =16) and the control group (n =16).Animals in both groups underwent endotracheal tube clamping to induce CA.Once induced,CA left untreated for a period of 8 minutes. At the beginning of initiation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR),SB (1.0 mEq/kg,diluted to 40 mL) was injected in central venous in SB group and isopyknic normal saline solution was injected in control group. Two minutes following initiation of CPR,defibrillation was attempted until return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) was achieved or animals died.To assess the SB effects on myocardial metabolism, positron emission tomography (PET) was performed at baseline and 6 after ROSC.To analyze 18F-FDG myocardial uptake identified in PET,the maximum standardized uptake value (SUV) was measured. Results ROSC was 10/16 successful in SB group and only 8/16 successful in control group. The average survival time of SB group was (3.63 ± 0.76) h and that of control group was (2.45 0.70) h.Myocardial metabolism imaging using PET demonstrated that myocardial metabolism injuries in control group were more severe than in SB group at 6 h after ROSC and SUVmax was more higher in SB group than in control group (6 hrs after ROSC:1.32 ± 0.20 vs.1.10 ± 0.14,P =0.035).Conclusions In swine model of asphyxiation CA,SB improve the myocardial metabolism and might raise the possibility of ROSC and have no hypernatronemia.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the changes of peristalsis of small intestine in guinea pigs after administration of traditional Chinese medicines activating blood to resolve stasis (Compound Danshen Decoction, CDSD) or/and medicines dredging intestines (Dachengqi Decoction, DCQD), and to explore the synergetic or intensive effect of CDSD on DCQD. METHODS: By means of BL-420 Biological Experimental System, peristalsis of small intestine was recorded and analyzed following administration of DCQD, CDSD or Huoxue Chengqi Decoction (HXCQD, compound of CDSD and DCQD) respectively in different experimental periods. RESULTS: The amplitude and frequency of intestinal peristaltic wave obviously increased following administration of the three decoctions, but HXCQD appeared to be most dominantly. CONCLUSION: The effect of DCQD can be further enhanced by combining use of CDSD, suggesting that the traditional Chinese medicines activating blood to resolve stasis have an intensive effect on medicines dredging intestines.

Objective To investigate the functional activity and connectivity of the insular cortex at rest in persons with low back pain (LBP).Methods Twelve healthy subjects (male 6,female 6 ; age 24.8 ± 3.3 years) were given fMRI 3.0T scans at rest.Back muscle pain was then induced with an intramuscular injection of 3% hypertonic saline solution and a second scan was performed. The pain-free and in-pain fMRI data were compared using paired t-tests to highlight any changes in the functional connectivity of the anterior and posterior insular cortex on both sides.Pain severity was quantified using a visual analogue scale (VAS).Results Ratings of LBP severity peaked at 6.02 ± 1.96 on the VAS.The functional connectivity of the inferior insular cortex with the frontal cortex, the thalamus and the parahippocampal gyrus was enhanced when the subjects were in pain, but connectivity with the posterior cingulate cortex, the precuneus, the temporal cortex, the paracentral lobule and the cerebellar tonsil was reduced. The inferior parietal lobule exhibited significantly enhanced connectivity with the anterior insular cortex, but reduced connectivity with the posterior insular cortex. In addition, the medial cingulate cortex displayed decreased functional connectivity with the anterior insular cortex, but increased functional connectivity with the posterior insular cortex when the subjects were in pain. Conclusion This study has revealed impeded functional connectivity of the insular cortex when experiencing LBP at rest. This may possibly be related to pain's disruption of cognition and emotion.

Objective:To investigate the expression of endoplasmic reticulum stress proteins in photoreceptor apoptosis in light-induced retinal degeneration. Methods: Exposure to excessive levels of light induced photoreceptor apoptosis and had been previously used as a model for the study of retinal degeneration. Photoreceptor apoptosis was detected by terminal dUTP transferase nick end labeling (TUNEL). The protein expression levels of ER stress sensors including glucose-regulated protein-78 (GRP78/BiP), caspase-12, phospho-eukaryotic initiation factor 2? (eIF2?) and phospho-double-stranded RNA-activated protein kinase-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK) were examined by immuno-fluorescence and Western blot analysis. Results: Following light exposure, the protein expression levels of GRP78/BiP, caspase-12, phospho-eIF2? and phospho-PERK were up-regulated in a time dependent manner. The up-regulation of these proteins coincided with or preceded the photoreceptor apoptosis. At the peak of their expression, they were mainly located in the photoreceptor inner segments and/or outer nuclear layers (ONL). Conclusion: Activation of endoplasmic reticulum stress proteins appears to play an important role in light-induced retinal degeneration. Therefore endoplasmic reticulum stress modulators could become a strong candidate for a therapeutic agent in treatment of these diseases.
