OBJECTIVETo evaluate serum Nkx2-1 (NKX homeobox-1) levels in diagnosis of primary lung cancer.
METHODSThe serum NKX2-1 and CEA (carcinoma embryonic antigen) levels were measured in 61 patients with primary lung cancer admitted from May 2009 to December 2010 and 49 healthy individuals served as controls. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) of NKX2-1 in diagnosis for primary lung cancer was analyzed. The value of serum NKX2-1 in diagnosing primary lung cancer was compared with that of CEA by X(2) test and Kappa test.
RESULTSThe serum Nkx2-1 levels in lung cancer were significantly higher than those in controls [(1.4206 ±0.1257)ng/ml compared with (0.7646 ±0.0734)ng/ml,P<0.01]. ROC analysis showed the area under the curve of serum NKX2-1 was 0.859. The Kappa value of NKX2-1 was higher than that of CEA (0.586 compared with 0.396,P<0.05). Combination of serum NKX2-1 with CEA improved the Kappa value to 0.704, and also had high sensitivity (83.6%) and specificity (87.0%) for diagnosis of primary lung cancer.
CONCLUSIONSerum NKX2-1 protein can be used as a marker for diagnosis of lung cancer, the combination of NKX2-1 with CEA may further improve the diagnostic value.

OBJECTIVE To study the audiological and etiological characteristics of infants failed to pass hearing screening. METHODS 126 infants received audiological diagnostic tests, including auditory brainstem response(ABR),40 Hz auditory event related potential(40 Hz AERP),distortion product otoacoustic emissions(DPOAE),tympanometry and acoustic reflex. The degrees and types of the hearing loss, and etiological characteristics were analyzed. RESULTS Among 126 infants (252 ears),61 were diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss(48.41%),48 were conductive hearing loss(38.09%),and 17 were found to have normal ABR thresholds(13.49%). The hearing loss was associated with various factors, including history of infection during pregnancy(21 cases),threatened abortion(9 cases),pregnancy with age at or over 35(6 cases),extension of pregnancy(7 cases),history of systematic diseases(10 cases),history of neonatal jaundice(13 cases),history of asphyxia and hypoxia(18 cases),premature and low birth weight neonates(8 cases),neonatal diseases (8 cases),family history of deafness(5 cases),craniofacial deformity(3 cases),central nervous system disorder(6 cases),and 9 cases were second child. CONCLUSION The infants who failed to pass hearing screening have various etiology characteristics in hearing loss. The infants associated with risk factors were mostly found to have sensorineural hearing loss.

Objective To explore the effect of recovery sleep on the executive function after 36 h of total sleep deprivation by event related potential technology. Methods Thirteen healthy male college students participated in two trials. At the first trial normal sleep as control was investigated. At the second trial participants experienced 36 h of sleep deprivation and then accepted 8 h recovery sleep. In each trial six Go/Nogo tests were employed to test the executive control function and the ERP data were recorded. Results There was no statistical difference in behavior and ERP results at each time point as the subjects had normal sleep. After 36 h of sleep deprivation, the behavior results were statistically significant when compared to the baseline. The amplitude and latency of Nogo-N2, Nogo-P3 on Fz electrode, the amplitude and latency of Nogo-P3 on Cz electrode showed statistical significance when compared to the baseline. After 8 h recovery sleep, the average correct reaction time and the Go correct reaction rate had statistical significance compared to 36 h value. The amplitude of Nogo-N2 and Nogo-P3 had no statistical significance compared to the baseline. However,it was of statistical significance[(-6.80 3.95)vs(-3.37 2.63)μV,(10.63±6.62)vs(5.63±5.45)μV,(9.49±7.37)vs(6.08±6.56)μV] compared to 36 h value. The latency of the recovery value of Nogo-N2 and Nogo-P3 was statistically significant[(254.14±15.55)vs(243.08±13.97)ms(382.14±41.07)vs(349.17±30.36)ms,(369.86±26.48)vs(347.48±29.24)ms]compared to the baseline. Conclusion As the time of sleep deprivation is prolonged, the executive function is impaired and the executive function is not completely recovered after 8 h recovery sleep.

We report here on a 64-year-old woman with extramedullary plasmacytoma involving the bilateral adrenal glands. Primary adrenal extramedullary plasmacytoma is extremely rare and only three cases of extramedullary plasmacytoma in the unilateral adrenal gland have currently been reported on. This case is of interest in that the bilateral adrenals were involved. In this article, we present the MRI findings and we briefly review the relevant literature.

Objective To investigate the expression and significance of major histocompatibility complex classⅡgene in multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Methods Two-hit porcine model of MODS was duplicated in 18 swine that were randomly assigned into experimental group(Group M,n=9) and control group(Group C,n=9).The Group M was given compound factors including hemorrhagic shock, reperfusion injury and endotoxemia, and the Group C only underwent anesthesia and arterious/ve- nous eannula. After seven days, the animals were killed to remove splenic tissues fro extracting total RNA by Trizol method. The primer of SLA-DQA(MHC classⅡgene of swine)was designed to construct cD- NA by reverse transcription and the quantity of SLA-DQA mRNA detected with real time fluorescent quan- titative polymerase chain reaction(real time FQ-PCR).The standard curve was described by UVP com- puter image analysis system. Results The mortality of Group M was 78%(7/9),and the incidence rate of MODS was 89%(8/9).The expressing quantity of Group M was(1.376?1.006)?10~3,signifi- cantly lower than(5.330?3.053)?10~3 of Group C(P<0.01).Conclusion Duplication of por- cine MODS model is satisfactory.Down-regulation of MHC classⅡgene may be due to control of classⅡtransactivator(CⅡTA)and release of multiple eytokine, such as TNF-?and IL-10.

Chinese Journal of Applied Physiology 2012;28(6):555-560
Neuroglobin (Ngb) is a respiratory protein that is preferentially expressed in brain of mouse and man. In this article, Tibetan antelope, living at altitude of 3 000-5 000 m for millions of years, was selected as the model of hypoxia-tolerant adaptation species. Using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blot techniques, expression of Ngb gene was amplified and analyzed in antelope brain tissue. Our results showed that Ngb homology protein in Tibetan antelope was identified with more sequence similarity with cattle (96%), sheep (95%), and human (95%). We detected that there were some mutations occurred in the Open Reading Frame of Ngb in Tibetan antelope compared with sheep. Phylogenetic analysis of Ngb chain showed that it was closer to cattle than the others. This study suggests possible roles of central nervous system enriched Ngb in adaptation of Tibetan antelope to extremely high altitude.
