National Journal of Andrology 2015;21(7):659-662
Epidemiological surveys show that folic acid can prevent prostate cancer, but fortified folic acid may increase the risk of the malignancy. The physician data queries from the National Cancer Institute of the USA describe folate as protective against prostate cancer, whereas its synthetic analog, folic acid, is considered to increase prostate cancer risk when taken at levels easily achievable by eating fortified food or taking over-the-counter supplements. We review the current literature to examine the effects of folate and folic acid on prostate cancer, help interpret previous epidemiologic data, and provide a clarification regarding the apparently opposing roles of folate for patients with prostate cancer. A literature search was conducted in Medline to identify studies investigating the effect of nutrition and specifically folate and folic acid on prostate carcinogenesis and progression. In addition, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database was analyzed for the trends in serum folate levels before and after mandatory fortification. Folate likely plays a dual role in prostate carcinogenesis. There remains some conflicting epidemiologic evidence regarding folate and prostate cancer risk. However, there is growing experimental evidence that higher circulating folate levels can contribute to prostate cancer progression. Further research is needed to clarify these complex relationships.

Chinese Journal of Ultrasonography 2009;18(4):302-304
Objective To evaluate the changes of the left atrial function in patients with old myocardial infarction(OMI) by strain rate imaging(SRI). Methods The velocity of the left atrial lateral wall and atrial septum was measured by SRI in 30 patients with OMI(OMI group) and 25 normal subjects (control group). Left atrium passive eject volume index(LAPEVl) and left atium active eject volume index (LAAEVI) were measured using Simpson method. Results ①Compared with the control group, the velocity of the left atrium was reduced obviously in ventricular systole and early ventricular diastole in OMI group(P<0.05) ,but was increased in late ventricular diastole(P<0.05). ②Compared with the controls, LAAEVI was increased significantly in OMI group, but LAPEVI was decreased signicantly(P <0.001). Conclusions SRI could be used to evaluate the left atrial function accurately in patiens with OMI.

Chinese Journal of Dermatology 2009;42(2):129-131
Objective To explore the role of IL-18 in the pathogenesis of chronic eczema. Methods Twenty-seven patients with chronic eczema were enrolled into this study along with 12 normal human controls. The severity of eczema was evaluated by eczema area and severity index (EASI) in patients. Skin specimens and vein blood samples were obtained from all the subjects. Reverse-transcription PCR was performed to detect the mRNA expression of IL-18 and IFN-γ in the skin tissue, and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to measure the protein expression of IL-18 and IFN-γ in the sera of these subjects. Results The mRNA expression level in patients and controls was 1.04±0.29 pg/mL and 0.52±0.15 pg/mL for IL-18, respectively, 0.96±0.34 pg/mL and 0.47±0.12 pg/mL for IFN-γ, respectively; a significant increase was observed in the mRNA expression level of both IFN-γ and IL-18 in the patients than in the controls (both P<0.01). Moreover, the mRNA expression level of both IFN-γ and IL-18 positively correlated with the severity of eczema in patients (r=0.737, 0.883, both P<0.01). The protein expression level of IL-18 and IFN-γ was 475.8±59.4 pg/mL and 10.1±7.0 pg/mL, respectively, in the patients, 123.6 ±29.5 pg/mL and 11.1±3.4 pg/mL, respectively, in the controls; a statistical difference was observed in the protein expression level of IL-18 (P<0.01), but not in that of IFN-γ(P>0.01), between the patients and controls. No significant correlation was observed betweenthe serum level of IL-18 or IFN-γ and sererity of eczema in the patients (both P>0.01). Conclusions IL-18 may be involved in the pathogenesis of chronic eczema. Also, in local lesions, IL-18 seems to correlate with the induction of production of Th1 type cytokines, such as IFN-γ which could subsequently mediate hypersensitivity response.

Objective To discuss the influence about three kinds of nasal feeding methods on ICU critical patients with gastrointestinal complications, thus providing guidance for ICU patients to choose reasonable way of nasal feeding pump injection. Methods 120 ICU patients were randomly assigned into three groups, which is the continuous 6-hour and intermittent 2-hour every three time pump group and continuous 24-hours pump group and intermittent 24-hour(continuous 2-hour and intermittent 1-hour every eight time units)pump group ,each group has 40 cases. To observe the the influence about three different way of nasogastric on ICU critical patients with gastrointestinal complications. Results The incidence of diarrhea and constipation among the three groups was not statistically significant (P>0.05) . The gastric retention rate of the continuous 24-hour pump group was significantly higher than that of the continuous 6-hour and intermittent 2-hour pump group and the intermittent 24-hour pump group, the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the continuous 6-hour and intermittent 2-hour pump group and the intermittent 24-hour pump group, (P > 0.05). Conclusions The continuous 24-hour pump group in gastric retention was slightly worse than the other two pump way. Compared with ICU class three a week and feeding times , the continuous 6-hour and intermittent 2-hour pump method is more suitable for ICU patients.

Objective To explore the value of echocardiography in percutaneous left atrial appendage (LAA)closure for stroke prevention in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation during procedure and for short-term follow-up.Methods Twenty patients were enrolled to undergo percutaneous LAA closure with the LAmbre device.Rheumatic valvular diseases were excluded by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and transesophageal echocardiography(TEE)before the closure procedure.TEE was performed during the procedure for the trans-septal puncture and the release of the closure device.Combined TEE with angiographic measurements, guidance for the optimal device size was provided. The closure effect and procedure-related complications were observed immediately by TEE and also evaluated by TTE at 1-day and 1-month follow-up.Results All patients underwent LAA occlusion successfully.TEE color Doppler evaluation have shown nine patients with complete closure immediately, one with a ≤ 1 mm residual LAA leak, and ten with a 1 -3 mm jet. There were no other complications during the procedure. One day after the closure, small pericardial effusions were observed for three patients while two of the three were free of the pericardial effusion at the 1-month follow-up.During the short-term follow-up,no damage was found at any anatomical structures near LAA due to the closure process, and there was no significant difference of cardiac function before and after the procedure. Conclusions With the guidance of TEE,the successful rate of percutaneous LAA closure procedure was preferable and the occurrence rate of compliance was acceptable. And TTE played an important role in patients'short-term follow-up.
