1.Computed tomography of osteitis condensans ilii

The CT is a more accurate technique for detecting sclerotic bony change of osteritis condensans ilii thanplain radiograph. We analysed a comparison between CT and plain radiography of osteitis condensans ilii, acorrelation between osteitis condensans ilii and women of childbearing age. The result were as follow: 1. Theincidence of osteitis condensans ilii is 5.3% on KUB, 11.7% on CT when the width of iliac sclerosis is more than7.5mm as diagnsotic criteria. 2. We observed a osteitis condensans ilii between 19 years and 51 years of age, mostfrequently in fourth decade. 3. The width of iliac sclerosis is 10-13 mm in 3 cases of osteitis condensans ilii onboth CT &KUB, 7.5-9mm in 4 cases of osteitis condensans ilii on CT only. 4. The incidence of osteitis condensansilii is increased significantly when the width of iliac sclerosis is less than 7.5mm as diagnostic criteria. 5.Relatively high correlation between osteitis condensans ilii and delivary in our study (66.6%)

2.Value of the lumbar lordotic angle taken angle from CT scanogram as an index of back pain

Normal" spinal posture is generally accepted as moderate lordosis of the cervical and the lumbar sections ofspine and moderate kyphosis of the thoracic and sacrococcygeal sections. Among these normal range of the lumbarlordosis is less well defined. CT is very useful method to identified the bony structure and adjacent soft tissueof the spine, so it is very available method to detect accrate lumbar lordotic angle by using lateral Scanogram.Analysis and comparison of lumbar lordotic angles, crossing angle are drawn each parallel line to the superior endplate of body of 1st. lumbar vertebra and to the inferior end plate of the 5th. Lumbar vertebra, in 174 cases withbackache and 50 cases normal groups at Kangnam General Hospital Public Corporation, from Aug. 1985 to Jul 1986.Male and female were almostly same affected in backache group (1.1:1). And most lumbar lordotic angles were 10 degrees to 40degrees between all backache age group. On backache group, over all mean lumbar lordotic angleswere 24.7±8.9degrees but no significant difference at mean value of the each disease, such as HIVD, DegenerationSpondylosis or No Remarkable Finding group. On control group, over all mean ones were 29.2±8.0degrees. So,significant difference of lumbar lordotic angle between backache and control group, and most difference is at 5th.decade group(p<0.01).

4.Nutrition Label Use and Its Relation to Dietary Intake among Chronic Disease Patients in Korea: Results from the 2008-2009 Fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES-IV).

BACKGROUND: Nutrition label reading is helpful in attaining a healthy diet. Nutrition label use and its related factors have been studied in many Korean articles, but their research samples were the general population and not chronic disease patients. This study aimed to explore the use of nutrition labels and its relation to dietary intake among chronic disease patients in Korea. METHODS: A total of 3160 respondents aged> or =20 years from the 2008-2009 Fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES-IV) participated in the study. Their chronic medical conditions included hypertension, hyperlipidemia, coronary artery disease, diabetes and/or stroke and they were interviewed regarding their use of nutrition labels. Nutrition intake was also estimated by 24-hour dietary recalls. RESULTS: Overall, 10.4% of the chronic disease patients reported to using nutrition labels. The nutrients they looked at first were total calories, fat and cholesterol. Factors related to reading nutrition labels were relatively higher education, high body mass index and lower frequency of alcohol intake in males and relatively younger age and higher education in females. Nutrition label users consumed lower total calories, protein and fat in the male CAD group, lower total calories and carbohydrate in both diabetes and total groups and lower total calories and fiber in the female stroke group. CONCLUSIONS: Our study found that, in Korea, a significantly lower rate of patients with chronic disease read nutrition labels. Strategies need to be developed to improve clinical application of nutrition labels in this population.

5.A Cephalometric study on tooth movement pattern of maxillary 6 anteriors with double keyhole loops.

The present study hypothesized that the double keyhole looped archwire plays a positive role for the sake of translatory movement and/or controlled tipping of upper 6 anteriors, and secures anchorage control as well. The purposes of the study were to evaluate the changes in lateral cephalograms during orthodontic treatment with DKHLs and to compare the skeletal & dental changes before- & after-treatment. The materials of this study were lateral cephalograms of 20 adult patients with upper dentoalveolar protrusion both in class I and in class II Division 1 malocclusion. Lateral cephalograms were taken before and after orthodontic treatment with upper 1st bicuspid extraction and DKHLs. The results were obtained as follows: 1. There were no statistically significant differences in skeletal measurement except SNB and PTFH between before- & after-treatment. The major changes were in dentoalveolar region. 2. After treatment, there were statistically significant decrease in dental measurement except interincisal angle. 3. Both upper & lower lip protrusion was decreased. 4. There were statistically differences in upper anterior crown horizontal & root vertical dimension(7.08+/-2.14 mm, 2.38+/-1.15 mm, p<0.01). 5. There were statistically differences in upper posterior dental(both crown & root) horizontal dimension(2.48+/-0.99 mm, 2.05+/-0.91 mm, p<0.01).

6.Interleukin-1beta levels in human gingival crevicular fluid during orthodontic tooth movement.

Bone remodeling is a complex process regulated by various mediators. Cytokines are known to be associated with the mechanically induced response in orthodontic tooth movement. In particular, IL-1beta stimulates bone resorption and induces osteoclast proliferation. The purpose of this study was to identify and quantify IL-1beta in human gingival crevicular fluid(GCF), and to investigate the changes in its level during orthodontic tooth movement. Twelve patients(mean age of 19.2 years) were used as the subjects. An upper canine of each patient having treatment for distal movements served as the experimental tooth, whereas the contralateral was used as the control. The GCF of compression and tension side of the experimental teeth and the GCF of mesial side of control teeth was taken from the each subject immediately before activation, and at 1, 24, and 168 hr after initiation tooth movement. IL-1beta amount was. detected by ELISA. The concentration of IL-1beta was higher in experimental group than in, the control group after treatment. Its level was elevated after initiation of tooth movement and it was the highest level at 24 hr in compression side of experimental group, But there was no significant change in control group. The results indicate that the change in IL-1beta level in GCF is associated with orthodontic tooth movement.

7.The effect of washing phosphoric acid etchant on shear bond strength of an orthodontic adhesive.

The aim of present study in vitro was to evaluate and compare the effects of different washing times of enamels etched with low phosphoric acid solution which makes unsoluble salts and etched but contaminated with saliva on shear bond strength of an orthodontic adhesive to enamel, and to observe the washing effect on the etched enamel surface by scanning electron microscope. All brackets were bonded with Mono-Lok2(TM)) on the labial surface of extracted human bicuspids after etching with 20w/w% and 37w/w% phosphoric acid solution for 60 seconds and then washing for 0, 5,10 and 20 seconds respectedly, After etching with 37w/w% phosphoric acid solution and contaminating with saliva for 30 seconds and then washing for 0, 5, 20 and 30 seconds and re-etching for 10 seconds. After 24 hours passed in the 37C water bath, the shear bond strengths were measured on Universal Test Machine. The data were evaluated and tested by ANOV A and Duncan's multiple range test, and those results were as follows. 1. There was no significant differences between (P>0.05) shear bond strength of bonded bracke ts with 5, 10, 20 seconds washing etched enamel using 37%w/w% phosphoric acid solution. 2. The shear bond strength of bonded brackets with 20w/w% phosphoric acid and then washing for 5 seconds showed bonded strength durable to occlusal force but its coefficiency score was high and etched surface was not cleaned completely and therefore it was assumed that its clinical application is not applicable. 3. There was no significant differences between (P>0.05) shear bond strengths of bonded brckets with washing for 5 seconds etched enamel using 37w/w% phosphoric acid solution and 10, 20 seconds washing etched enamel using 20w/w% phosphoric acid solution. 4. The shear bond strength of washing for 5 seconds etched enamel which was contaminated with saliva showed sufficient bonded strength durable to occlusal force but its coefficiency score was high and therefore its clinical application was not applicable. 5. After etching, the sample contaminated with saliva showed the sufficient shear bond strength even washing 20 seconds without re-etching.

8.Effects of Intra-Articular Injection and Subscapularis Motor Point Block on Painful Hemiplegic Shoulder.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of intra-articular injection of shoulder and subscapularis motor point block on painful hemiplegic shoulder. METHOD: Thirty painful hemiplegic shoulder of recent onset stroke were divided randomly into three groups, i.e. group I: range of motion (ROM) exercise only, group II: intra-articular injection with ROM exercise, group III: subscapularis motor point block with ROM exercise. The intra-articular injection of shoulder was done with 20 ml of normal saline, 5 ml of 1% lidocaine, and 40 mg of triamcinolone. The subscapularis motor point block was done with 5 ml of 5% phenol under electromyographic guide. The ROM in external rotation and simple X-ray of shoulder in full abduction were checked in three groups at pre-treatment and post-treatment 3 week, and the glenohumeral abduction and scapulohumeral rhythm were obtained from the shoulder X-ray. RESULTS: There were significant (p<0.05) improvements of glenohumeral abduction, external rotation, and scapulohumeral rhythm of shoulder in group II and III, but improvement of only glenohumeral abduction was significant in group I. Angular increment of glenohumeral abduction and external rotation was most significant in group III compared with other two groups. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the intra-articular injection of shoulder and subscapularis motor point block are potentially useful techniques in the prevention and management of the painful hemiplegic shoulder.

9.Retinal Vascular Patterns Part III: Endophthalmitis following by perforating injury and corneal ulcer.

The authors studied the retinal vascular patterns of human eye suffered from complicated endophthalmitis following by perforating injury and corneal ulcer. The technique of preparing slides to study the retinal vascular patterns were same as previously noted Part I report. A lot of microorganisms, such as cocci, bacilli and fungi are found in the inflamed foci(with or without filaments) around the retinal vessels unless the vessels were completely occluded. Focal and diffuse exudative vasculitis is related to the species of microorganisms and cbserved stage but almost all retinal vessel waIls show diffuse loss of perivascular argyrophilic fibers, socalled "moth eaten" appearance. In the later stage of vasculitis microorganisms are not found in the inflamed focus("punched out" lesion) of the occluded vessels which show as "bark-stripped-dead tree" appearance in reticulin stain.

10.Genetic characteristics of the Korean isolate KI-1 of Toxoplasma gondii.

Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites were isolated from an ocular patient in the Republic of Korea and maintained in the laboratory (designated KI-1). In the present study, its genotype was determined by analyzing dense granule antigen 6 (GRA6) gene and surface antigen 2 (SAG2) gene as typing markers. Digestion of the amplification products of GRA6 and of the 5' and 3' ends of SAG2, respectively, with Mse I, Sau3A I, and Hha I, revealed that KI-1 is included in the genotype I, which includes the worldwide virulent RH strain. In addition, when the whole sequences of the coding regions of SAG1, rhoptry antigen 1 (ROP1), and GRA8 genes of KI-1 were compared with those of RH, minor nucleotide polymorphisms and amino acid substitutions were identified. These results show that KI-1 is a new geographical strain of T. gondii that can be included in the genotype I.
