Objective To explore the role of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection in the etiology of drug eruption. Methods PCR-Southern blot was used to detect EBV-specific DNA fragment BamH I -W in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of 32 patients with drug eruption and 30 age- and sex-matched normal controls. The mRNA expression of EBV lyric gene BZLF1 in EBV DNA-positive samples was measured by RT-PCR and Southern blot. ELISA was performed to detect EBV virus capsule antigen (VCA)-specific IgM. Results The positivity rate of EBV DNA was significantly higher in patients with drug eruption than in normal controls (78.13% (25/32) vs 10.00% (3/30), P < 0.01), while no significant difference was noted between patients with severe and mild drug eruption (P > 0.05). The expression of BZLF1 mRNA was detected in 3 out of 25 EBV DNA-positive patients; of the 3 patients, 1 suffered from mild drug eruption, and 2 from severe drug eruption. EBV VCA-specific IgM was observed in 6 of 32 patients with drug eruption, but not in any normal controls. No significant difference in the positivity rate of EBV VCA-specific lgM existed between patients with severe and mild drug eruption (P > 0.05). Conclusions There is an active infection of EBV in patients with drug eruption. EBV infection is probably an environmental factor affecting the development of drug eruption.

Objective To detect the infection rate of human papillomavirus (HPV) types in keratoacanthoma (KA) tissue, and to study the distribution of HPV DNA-positive cells. Methods In situ hybridization was performed to detect HPV subtypes 6/11, 16/18, and 31/33 in paraffin-embeded tissue samples from 46 patients with KA and 34 nomal human controls. Results Mucosal HPV DNA was positive in 31 (67.39%)of the 46 KA samples, and mixed infection rate of HPV amounted to 83.87% (26/31) in these positive samples. The DNA of tested mucosal HPV types existed mainly in episomal status. Positive reactions were observed within or at the edge of nuclei. HPV infected cells showed a stripe-, slice-like or focal distribution mainly in superficial middle lamina of spinous layer at the bottom or lateral margin of crater-shaped epidermal depression. No mucosal HPV DNA was noted in normal control samples. Conclusions Compared with normal controls, patients with KA are infected with mucosal HPV at a higher frequency, and mucosal HPV DNA mainly exists in episomal status in KA tissue, hinting that HPV infection play a certain role in the pathogenesis of KA.

Objective: To explore myocardial protection effect of artificial subhibernation therapy on rabbits with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and its possible mechanism. Methods: A total of 24 rabbits were randomly and equally divided into sham operation group, AMI control group and AMI subhibernation group. Changes of their body temperature, heart rate and respiratory frequency were observed. Serum concentration of creatine kinase isoenzyme (CK-MB) was measured by immunosuppression method, and plasma concentration of norepinephrine (NE) was measured by high performance liquid chromatography-electrochemical method. Percentage of myocardial infarct area in left ventricular area (I/LV) and apoptosis index (AI) were compared between two AMI groups. Results: Compared with control group 4 h after establishment of AMI model, there were significant decrease in body temperature [(37.333±0.427)℃ vs. (34.988±0.488)℃], I/LV [(19.281±1.687)% vs. (16.263±2.275)%] and AI [(36.636±1.671)% vs. (34.521±1.356)%], and concentration of CK-MB [(759.863±64.111)U/L vs. (560.225±65.837)U/L] and NE [(200.475±43.581) ng/ml vs. (143.813±43.383) ng/ml] in subhibernation group, P<0.05,or <0.01, but there were no significant changes in heart rate and respiratory frequency between two groups. Conclusion: Artificial subhibernation therapy possesses significant myocardial protection effect on rabbits with acute myocardial infarction through reducing stress response, inducing low temperature and inhibiting cell apoptosis etc.
