Objective To explore how the spared muscles in upper limbs and trunk compensated for elbow extension movements in patients with SCI at the level of C_5 and C_6.Methods Fifteen patients with SCI at the level of C_5 and C_6 and fifteen healthy subjects were divided into an SCI group and a control group respectively.The surface EMG recorded from the anterior dehoid,middle deltoid,posterior deltoid,triceps braehii muscle,biceps braehii muscle,upper peetoralis,serratus anterior and latissimus dorsi during four elbow extension activities including grasp- ing cup,reaching for light-switch,wheelchair ambulation and upper limb weight-bearing.The relative EMG intensi- ties of muscles were expressed as a percentage of maximal voluntary contraction.Results Several muscles partici- pated in the activity simultaneously when both groups of subjects performed every motor task.But the primary muscles involved in the movements were different between the two groups.Furthermore,the SCI group tended to employ more muscles than the controls to perform a activity.The compensatory strategies used in various motor tasks by the spared muscles were different.Conclusion The motorueuron recruitment patterns used by the C_(5～6)SCI patients in per- forming elbow extension activities could be different from those by the healthy subjects.The patients accomplished performing different motor tasks by changing their compensatory strategies.

Background Rare studies on the effect of statin on early stage of atherosclerosis have been repor- ted.Oxidative stress induced endothelial dysfunction may be the initiative factor for the development of atheroscle- rotic plague.Objective To investigate the mechanisms by which simvastatin,prevents atheroselerosis independ- ently of its lipid-lowering effect in Apolipoprotein E deficient mice.Methods Twenty-four 6 week old male apoE- deficient mice were randomly to receive placebo or simvastatin 5 mg/(kg?d)by gavage for 4 weeks.Total choles- terol(TC),super oxide dismutase(SOD),malondialdehyde(MDA)and serum nitric oxide(NO)were measured by biochemical analysis.Endothelium was observed by HE dyeing.The expression of caveolin-1 in aortic wall was detected by immunohistochemistry.Results There was no significant difference in serum TC between control and simvastatin treatment groups.Simvastatin caused less damaged endothelium(33.33% vs control's:75%,P

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effectiveness of surgical strategies for Shang Ring circumcision in the treatment of short frenulum praeputii in patients with redundant prepuce or phimosis.

METHODSTotally, 130 cases of short frenulum praeputii with redundant prepuce or phimosis were randomly assigned to an experimental group and a control group of equal number to receive Shang Ring circumcision, the former by transverse incision in the distal penis foreskin and pull-up of the interior board, and the latter by conventional transverse incision and longitudinal suture of the frenulum praeputii. Comparisons were made between the two groups in the surgical duration, intraoperative blood loss, 24 h postoperative pain visual analog score (VAS), postoperative complications, satisfaction with the penile appearance, and the quality of sexual life.

RESULTSThe surgical duration, intraoperative blood loss, 24 h postoperative VAS, postoperative sexual satisfaction, and satisfaction with penile appearance were (4.60 +/- 1.20) min, (2.61 +/- 1.81) ml, 1.73 +/- 0.76, 98.5%, and 98.5%, respectively, in the experimental group, as compared with (21.60 +/- 6.30) min, (11.10 +/- 3.40) ml, 5.37 +/- 1.84, 70.3% and 69.8% in the control, with statistically significant differences between the two groups (P < 0.05). The incidence rates of such major complications as wound dehiscence, infection, and moderate to severe edema were 1.5% (1/65), 3.1% (2/65), and 4.6% (3/65), respectively, in the experimental group in comparison with 12.3% (8/65), 15.3% (10/65), and 30.7% (20/65) in the control, with statistically significant differences between the two groups (P < 0.05). None of patients had any serious complications.

CONCLUSIONShang Ring circumcision by transverse incision in the distal penis foreskin and pull-up of the interior board, with its advantages of shorter operation time, less blood loss, mild pain, fewer complications, and higher satisfaction and acceptance of the patients, can be used as an safe and effective approach to the treatment of short frenulum praeputii.

Statistic-based experimental design was used to optimize the culture conditions for Pseudomonas aeruginosa ME16 strain which is capable of utilizing methane.Effects of inoculum volume,temperature,methane content,and initial pH of media on cell growth were studied with the medium of mineral salt and methane gas,and the response surface methodology(RSM) was then used to optimize culture conditions.The optimum conditions were as follows:temperature of 29.4℃,inoculum volume of 1.8% and methane content of 25%.Under the optimized culture conditions,the ME16 production was increased by 0.8 times and its cultivation time was reduced.The removal of methane gas by ME16 was preliminary investigated,and the removal rate of methane gas reached 65.7%.The results indicated that the strain was capable of removing of methane.

This article mainly summarise the results of the chemical compositions and their pharmacological activities of Arnebiae Radix since 1966. The chemistry components isolated from Arnebiae Radix are mainly naphthoquinone, monoterpene phenol and quinone, phenolic acids and their salts, alkaloids, aliphatic and esters. Pharmacological results showed that the chemical compositions and the extracts of Arnebiae Radix have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, hepatoprotection, antioxidant, anti-tumor and immune function and other activities. This article hopefully to provide a reference for further research, development and utilization of Arnebiae Radix.
