PURPOSE: This study was to identify the perceptions of nursing student on the clinical practice environment and related variables. METHODS: The subjects of this study were 180 nursing students from a college participated in clinical practice at four regional hospitals. Data was collected with the questionnaire tool for the perceptions of clinical practice environment. RESULTS: The students highly satisfied in the major had significantly high perception in innovation, personalization, student involvement, and clinical practice satisfaction. The students with a low level of stress and a clearly named guidance nurse were significantly high in the perceptions of task orientation, innovation, personalization, student involvement, and practice satisfaction. Clinical practice environment variables such as task orientation, innovation, individualization, personalization, student involvement, and practice satisfaction were significantly correlated with each other. In student characteristics, the main variables directly influencing the perceptions of clinical practice environment were religion, the level of stress, and the method of guidance. CONCLUSION: Understanding the students' perspective would be valuable for promoting a positive clinical practice environment. Developing a cooperative system between the college and educational hospitals is necessary for effective clinical practice education

The hemodialysis patients with chronic renal disease have experienced negative emotions, especially depression among with physical, social, and psychological changes. Based upon a stress-coping theory, group imago psychotherapy which can induce effective coping through self awareness and positive emotional responses is implemented to the hemodialysis patients. The effects of the imago psychotherapy in regards to comfort and depression are studied here. Group imago psychotherapy was performed on forty-three subjects(twenty subjects in the experimental group and twenty-three subjects in the control group). The results of the study were as follows. After being given group imago psychotherapy, the comfort scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group (F=15.33, p= .003). Moreover, after being given treatment, the depression scores of the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group (F=9.14. p=.0044). Specifically, the scores on comfort in the experimental group under emotion-focused coping style were significantly higher than those of the control group (F=18.59, p= .0002). The mean difference on comfort scores in the experimental group under problem - focused coping style was higher than that of the control group. But their scores were not significant (F=0.19, p= .6729). The scores on depression in the experimental group under emotion-focused coping style were significantly lower than those of the control group (F=14.62, p= .0006). The mean difference on depression scores in the experimental group under problem - focused coping style was much lower than that of the control group. But their scores were not significant (F=0.31, p=.5947). There was a significant positive correlation between comfort and depression variables. After group imago psychotherapy the hemodialysis patients recognized positive changes in emotional reponses, self awareness, self control, ease of mind, and felt overall more relaxed. Imago psychotherapy is a nursing intervention which as this study has shown can improve to comfort. The results of this study can be applied to general nursing practices. In the view of holistic nursing, the development of the nursing practice combined with imago psychotherapy will contribute to the enlargement of the nursing field with conventional nursing practices.

PURPOSE: Based on the results of a survey on college freshmen's smoking, this study examined the application of smoking cessation programs. METHODS: The opinions of 89 smokers who were college freshmen were investigated and analyzed using a survey questionnaire. RESULTS: Among the survey respondents, the largest percentage (47.2%) replied 'little satisfied' to the question on the with campus life. Of the participants, 57.3% considered that their health state was bad because of smoking. As to motives for smoking, 'curiosity' was most frequent. Smokers had more smoking friends than nonsmoking ones. The 82% of the smokers had experience in stopping smoking. Among smoking cessation methods, the self overcoming was most frequent(50.6%). During the survey, 28 smokers applied for the cessation program and they favored e-mails for information. E-mails were sent to them once in a week for 6 weeks and short messages were sent to their cell phone in order to encourage them to read the e-mails. CONCLUSIONS: To encourage and maintain smoking cessation, it is recommended to have a personalized or small group program. More researches are needed to execute the program and evaluate results. Colleges need to have an innovative approach on smoking prevention and cessation services.

PURPOSE: This study was to explore gender differences on presenting patients with acute myocardial infarction in the emergency department. METHODS: The survey was done with 143 emergency medical charts presented to the emergency department and diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction between January 2005 and December 2006. The collected data were analyzed with frequency, chi-square, and t-test. RESULTS: Significant gender differences were apparent in age, route to the emergency department, elapsed time from onset of symptoms to arrival, and initial heart rate. Women were significantly more likely to report hypertension, diabetes, and congestive heart failure than men, but men were significantly more likely to report smoking. Chest pain was the most common initial symptom in both men and women. Women were significantly more likely to report dyspnea and nausea/vomiting than men. CONCLUSION: Although similarities exist in the associated symptoms of acute myocardial infarction, women might experience different symptoms, compared to men. These findings have implication that patients and health care providers should consider gender difference in presenting symptoms.

PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to investigate medical records and to develop care records for management of patients with chest pain in the emergency department. METHOD: Retrospective review of the 42 medical chart of patients presented to the emergency department with chest pain were used. The collected data were analyzed with a frequency of items in the medical records. RESULTS: In a frequency analysis of recorded items for doctors' chest pain assessment during history taking, the history/risk factors was the highest rank. The following ranks were 'commenced with when/ timing, extra symptoms, place, nature, stay/ radiate, alleviate/aggravate, intensity' in sequence. In a frequency of recorded items in nurse's progress notes according to nursing actions, the 'checking/monitoring' was the highest rank. The following ranks were 'performing, administering/injecting, referring/ arranging, testing, preparing/catheterizing, teaching/informing' in sequence. Chest pain care records for the emergency department was designed, based upon data analysis and literature review. CONCLUSION: The designed records can be a rapid and effective approach tool for assessment and recording of patients with chest pain. Further research is necessary for evaluating the designed chest pain care records.

Sarcomatoid carcinoma is a rare and occurs mainly in the upper aerodigestive tract such as the oral cavity, esophagus and vocal cords. It is a unique variant of squamous cell carcinoma. We report the case of a patient with spindle cell squamous cell carcinoma involving the mandible. At initial examination, overlying mucosa of that lesion was normal appearance. One week later, that lesion showed ulcerative and bloody change and rapid growth in size. This case showed unpredictable rapid growth although rapid growth in size was suspected of undergoing malignancy.

This study was conducted to confirm the provision standards and appropriateness of functional recovery training services performed on residents in long-term care facilities. Methods: Twenty-eight service providers working in four long-term care facilities applied the functional recovery training services to 63 older residents for 15 days, integrating them with their existing daily tasks. The contents recorded by the service providers on checklists were analyzed, and the experiences of applying functional recovery training services by the service providers were examined through focus group interviews. Results: Training for activities of daily living, excluding bathing, five items such as dressing and undressing are performed 2 to 4 times per day. The duration for one session is approximately 16 minutes for meals, around 10 minutes for bathing, and about 5 to 7 minutes for the remaining activities. Movement and walking training, covering five items like standing, occurs 2 to 3 times per day, with session durations ranging from 3 to 10 minutes. Physical activity training is conducted 1 to 2 times per day, with each session lasting about 5 to 7 minutes. Cognitive activity training is performed 1 to 2 times per day, with each session lasting approximately 4 to 7 minutes. Conclusion: For functional recovery training to be established in long-term care facilities, it is crucial to share an accurate understanding of the concept of training. Prior to the provision of training services, appropriate personnel such as nurses need to comprehensively assess the individuals and plan the training accordingly.

The purposes of this study were to describe systematically 18 years of oncology nursing research in Korea and suggest it's direction in future. 149 nursing studies published from 1980 to 1998 were selected for the present study. There were examined the source and the design of study, type of subjects, measurement variables, the intervention outcome of experimental research, and theme of qualitative research. The results were as follows : 1. 121 of 149 studies were composed of master thesis and dissertation of graduate school. There were 55 correlations, 30 descriptions, 19 comparisons, 19 qualitative studies and 2 Q-methods as the type of research design. 2. Cancer patients without describing specified diagnose as subjects' characteristic were 44 of total studies. The others had various diagnoses such as gastric cancer, uterine cancer, breast cancer, leukemia, Iymphoma, colorectal cancer, and lung cancer. According to treatment type. patients receiving chemotherapy were the highest number distribution as 53 of all researches. 3. Most measurement instruments used for research were translated it into Korean that developed by foreigners, such as Zung's depression. Spielberg's anxiety, and Wallston's locus of control. 4. Quality of life was shown the most frequently among correlational researches. the next one was depression the third was hope, and so on. 5. There was the most frequent comparison between cancer and non-cancer patients in comparative researches. It was surveyed those variables as diet habits, risk factors, stressful life events, anxiety and depression and self-care capacity between two groups. 6. The subjects were mostly chemotherapy Patients as 15 of 24 experimental studies. Oral care and education were respectively the highest experimental interventions. 7. Qualitative researches about cancer were reported since 1991. Their themes were illness experience, adaptation process, dying experience, family experience, hope. caring, experience of health behavior, meaning of chemotherapy and experience of cancer survivor. Phenomenologic methodology was designed above 50% of qualitative researches. According to the above findings, cancer research had increased since 1990 and done mostly by descriptive design but a few experimental studies. As recommendations for the future, It is necessary to study the comparison of oncology nursing research internationally. the replication to establish the effect of nursing intervention and the family care of cancer patient.

Lymphoepithelial cysts of the pancreas, which are lined by squamous epithelium and surrounded by mature lymphoid tissue, represent a rare clinicopathologic entity of cystic lesions of the pancreas and true pancreatic cysts. Here, we report a case of lymphoepithelial cyst of the pancreas and a review of the related Korean literature. A 58-year-old man presented to our hospital with an asymptomatic pancreatic mass and no remarkable medical history except hypertension. Physical examination and laboratory analyses showed no abnormalities. Ultrasonography (US) revealed a cystic lesion with heterogeneous internal echo within the body of the pancreas, and computed tomography (CT) revealed a low-density lesion (2.3*.5 cm) with well-defined margins and lobulating contour. To further characterize the mass, a biopsy was collected via endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS)-guided fine-needle aspiration. Histological examination revealed fibrous tissue and epithelial cells, but was insufficient for a definitive diagnosis. Laparotomy revealed that the mass was composed of keratinizing squamous epithelial cells surrounded by lymphoid tissue, thereby confirming the diagnosis of lymphoepithelial cyst of the pancreas

PURPOSE: To assess the usefulness of the Hounsfield number, measured by a non-contrast enhanced pelvic CT, after a uterine artery embolization as an index of the successful outcome of a uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study subjects included 15 women (age range: 28-49 years, mean age: 36.4 years) diagnosed with symptomatic uterine myomas and seen from March 2003 to August 2005. A non-contrast enhanced pelvic CT scan was performed six hours after a uterine artery embolization. The global and maximal CT numbers were measured for each myoma. In addition, a pelvic MRI was performed to measure the volume of each myoma prior to and 6 months after the UFE. The relationship between fibroid volume reduction and the global CT number were prospectively analysed. RESULTS: The mean global CT number was 91.25 HU in Group I and 40.8 HU in Group II. Further, the mean fibroid volume reduction rate was 73% in Group I and 10% in Group II (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The global CT number measured by a non-contrast enhanced pelvic CT is a useful predictive factor of a successful uterine fibroid embolization.
