BACKGROUND: Recently in Korea, the rate of addictive drug abuse is rapidly increasing in men on salary, housewives, and even in adolescents, who have been considered to be free from drugs, which presents a serious problem to the society. Especially, the habituation to gateway drug, such as cigarettes and alcohol, before 15 years old, would lead to the increased possibility of other drug abuse, including illicit drugs. Thereupon in this study, we intended toreview the effect of adolescents smoking an the drug abuse and deviated behaviors. METHODS: On September, 1997, randomly selected were 12 classes, an the basis of 2 classes per grade, from the two schools which was located each in Seoul and Buchean. And survey was dane on 610 students with non non-nominl, self-reported questionnaire. RESULTS: The rate of adolescent smoking was 28.1% in male students and had increasing tendency of "the higher the grades, the higher the smoking rate"(17.0% in the 1st gade, 31.5% in the 2nd grade, 35.9% in the 3rd grade). The smoking rate of female students was 12.3%. From the 2nd grade of middle school to the 2nd grade of high school was the critical period when the smoking habit was initiated in almost 90% of the students. The experiencing rates of drug abuse in studied subjects were as follows : drinking(79.0%), stimulants(4.8%), sedatives(4.1%), hypnotics(3.1%), glue sniffing(1.5%), butane gas(0.7%), marijuana/hemp(0.2%). They were higher in the smoking group than in the nansMoking group, showing statistical significances in most items except hypnotics and marijuana/hemp. Also simihr results were shown in deviated behaviors between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: With the concerted efforts of family, school, society and natian, we as family physicians should make efforts to delay and prevent adolescent's smoking, which is a gateway to drug abuse and deviated behaviors, and to increase people's recognition of health risks caused by smoking, and to provide proper program for adolescents to stop smoking.

Iliac vein compression syndrome is a rare clinical condition in which left common iliac vein is anatomically compressed between right common iliac artery and the fifth lumbar vertebrae or pelvic brim. Patients usually have marked edema of the left leg. Although the actual incidence is unknown, this syndrome most affects women in the second to fourth decade of life. We report 4 cases of iliac compression syndrome treated by surgical intervention during the last fifteen-year period. Among them, two women have suffered from chronic intermittent swelling and pain of left leg, and two men had acute or subacute symptoms. The fibrous web in the entrance of left iliac vein into vena cava existed in one case. Including this one, two were treated by transposition of iliac artery or vein with thrombectomy. One was decompressed the arterial compression by mobilization or adhesiolysis of the surrounding vessles with thrombectomy. To the last one in which the distal common iliac vein was compressed by tortous dilated left internal iliac artery, transsection and ligation of the internal iliac artery was performed. All patients have experienced improved left leg condition after operation. except the last one in which suffered from thrombosis of left popliteal vein after the iliac decompression.

The ectopic bone formation is a condition in which mature lamellar bone is formed in tissues that do not normally ossify, which was first described by Riedel in 1883. It has been observed at sites of chronic infection, hemorrhage, fibrous scarring or contracture. The pathophysiology of ectopic bone formation is not clearly identified but has complex and multifaceted causes, which resulted to differentiate the non-circulating pluripotent mesenchymal cells to osteoblastic stem cells. The local environment conditions of trauma, disruption of soft tissues and periostium, bone debris, hematoma, damaged muscle, uncommitted fibroblasts are suspected to be one of the causes of this condition. Comparing to simple soft tissue calcification, the ectopic bone has all the morphologic and biochemical characteristics of orthotopic bone, which is subjected to turnover and even has the ability for bone marrow formation. A case of late occlusion in a femoro-post. tibial PTFE graft about 5 months after vascular reconstruction due to ectotopic bone formation, which is confirmed by pathology around the graft is presented. After excision of the ectopic bone around the inflow vascular anastomosis site with re-vascularization, the patient was free from the ischemic leg symptoms. We reported a case of occlusion of vascular anastomosis site by ectopic bone formation with review of literature.

The corpus callosum consists of white fibers connecting the cerebral hemispheres. Agenesis of the corpus callosum is an uncommon congenital anomaly which is easily diagnosed in the postnatal period by ultrasound and computed tomographic scan or MRI, but its prenatal sonographic diagnosis is difficult because of fetal head positioning and limiting trans-axial scans. We experienced a case of agenesis of the corpus callusum with chromosomal anomaly. The prenatal sonographic findings are ventricular abnormalities that demonstrated dilatation of lateral ventricles and disproportionate enlargement of the occipital horns, which were suggestive findings for the corpus callosal agenesis. We could confim the diagnosis of the corpus callosal agenesis with chromosome anomaly by postnatal MRI and chromosome analysis.
