Objective To study the prevalence and relevant risk factors of low blood pressure and its influence on cardiovascular diseases in China. Methods A cross-sectional study for low blood pressure was conducted using the data of the third national survey of blood pressure in 1991. Low blood pressure was defined for systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) pressure less than the tenth percentile for the sample (SBP≤98mmHg and DBP≤60mmHg). Results The prevalence of low blood pressure for males and females were 2.7% and 7.4%, respectively. The prevalence of low blood pressure for females was higher than that of males (P<0.01). Prevalence of low blood pressure was 7.62%, 6.97%, 4.40%, 3.22%, 2.65%, 1.94% for age groups 15~, 25~, 35~, 45~, 55~, 65~, respectively. The prevalence of low blood pressure was gradually declined with aging. There was large variation in the prevalence of low blood pressure for different minorities. The prevalence of low blood pressure was higher in the southern rather than the northern part of China. Logistic regression showed that the age (OR 0.97, 95%CI 0.97~0.98, per 10 mmHg), BMI (OR 0.80, 95%CI 0.80~0.81), drinking (OR 0.89, 95%CI 0.86~0.93) and heart rate (OR 0.981, 95%CI 0.980~0.982) had reverse relationship with low blood pressure. The sex had a positive relationship with low blood pressure. The prevalence of stroke and myocardial infarction in the population with low blood pressure was lower than that of normal pressure or hypertension (P<0.01). Conclusion The prevalence and relevant risk factors of low blood pressure in China were various. We speculate that low blood pressure in Chinese population appears to be a normal state of physiology. The difinite influence in health needs cohort studies to confirm.

Background and objective To assess the predictive value of C-reactive protein(CRP) for major adverse cardiac events and the association between CRP level and the coronary lesion morphology and extent in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD).Methods CRP was measured on admission in 177 consecutive elderly (age≥60 years) patients with CHD who underwent coronary angiography. Patients were divided into high CRP group (CRP≥3mg/L) and normal CRP group (CRP <3mg/L). The association between CRP levels and the coronary lesion features, including severity of stenosis (mild, moderate, severe), extent of lesion (diffused or nondiffused), eccentricity of the plaque (eccentric or non-eccentric) were analyzed. Patients were followed up for a mean of 8 months for the occurrences of major adverse cardiac events (MACE). Results Compared with patients in normal CRP group, patients in high CRP group were more frequently to have unstable angina, multi-vessel, diffuse, eccentric lesions, positive remodeling, and non-smooth plaques (P<0.01). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed patients in high CRP group had a significantly lower MACE-free survival rate than patients in normal CRP group (Log-rank = 12.0, P<0.01); Cox regression analysis indicated CRP level as an independent predictor for the occurrence of MACE (OR=3.16, P<0.05) Conclusions High CRP level is associated with more extend, severe and eccentric coronary lesions and is an independent predictor for MACE in elderly patients with CHD.

BACKGROUND:Although several prosthetic methods, such as artificial denture and dental implants, are clinical therapies to tooth loss, they are thought to have safety and usage time issues. With the development of biological and biomaterial sciences, recently, tooth tissue engineering has attracted more and more attention.
OBJECTIVE:To reflect advances and problems of tissue engineering technologies for promotion of tooth regeneration.
METHODS:Using the keywords of“tissue engineering, tooth regeneration”in English and Chinese, PubMed and CNKI databases from 2007 to 2013 were retrieved. A total of 65 literatures addressing tooth regeneration and tissue engineering were col ected, including 25 Chinese articles and 40 English articles. Published early, repetitive, and similar researches were excluded. Final y, 48 articles were included.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The combination of stem cells and suitable scaffolds is widely used in tooth regeneration today, and growth factors or bone marrow which can produce promote tooth regeneration are added as wel , which has achieved partial or whole tooth regeneration. But there are apparent deficiencies in studies which focus on mechanisms behind tooth regeneration.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the protective effect of Apelin-13 on focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats.
METHODSFocal transient cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury was induced in male SD rats using modified suture occlusion technique. The rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: Sham group, Model group, Apelin-low dose (A) group, Apelin-middle dose (B) group and Apelin-high dose (C) group. Apelin-13 was injected into lateral cerebral ventricle, and the neurological function score, brain edema, infarct volume, apoptosis, malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and extracellular regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2) protein were measured.
RESULTSNeurological function scores, percentage of brain water content, infarct volumes and TUNEL-positive cells in B and C groups were lower than those in Model group (P<0.05). The level of MDA in the tissue bomogenate of brain tissue in the surrounding area of ischemia of B and C groups was lower than that of Model group, while the activity of SOD was higher (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in ERK1/2 protein expression among the groups (P>0.05). P-ERK1/2 increased in Model group and A, B, and C groups compared with Sham group (P<0.05), and that of A, B, and C group was higher than that of Model group (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONApelin-13 may play an important role by inhibiting oxidative stress to protect against focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury; ERK1/2 signaling pathway may be involved in the protective mechanism of Apelin-13.

We examined the biocompatibility and the safety of a-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CSH)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites for bone reconstruction application. The biocompatibility of the CSH/MWCNT composites was evaluated by the measures which taking L929 fibroblast cells cultured in the extracted liquid of the composite soaking solution and putting bone marrow stromal cells planted on the composite pellets in vitro, respectively. The cell proliferation was evaluated by MTT test and further observed using an inverted optical microscope and a scanning electric microscope. The toxicity of the composites was evaluated by acute and subacute systemic toxicity test. Long-term muscle and bone implantation in vivo tests were also conducted. L929 fibroblast cells grew well in the extracted liquid, as well as bone marrow stromal cells that could adhere on the surface of sample pellets and proliferated rapidly. MTT test showed that there were no significant differences between the experimental and control groups (P > 0.05). In vivo test manifested that the composites were no toxicity, no irritation to skin and good for bone defect reconstruction. It was proved that a-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CSH)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites exhibited excellent biocompatibility for the potential application in bone tissue engineering.
