OBJECTIVETo explore the influence of blood pressure lowering treatment on the International Prostate Syndrome Score (IPSS) and maximum flow rate (Qmax) in old and middle-aged male patients with essential hypertension.
METHODSWe enrolled 193 hypertensive male patients aged 50-75 years from the rural area of Anqing, Anhui, treated them with Amlodipine for 4 weeks, and then analyzed the correlation of their baseline blood pressure and reduced blood pressure with the changes of IPSS and Qmax.
RESULTSAfter 4 weeks of medication, the systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of the subjects dropped by 16.8 +/- 16.7 and 8.1 +/- 7.7 mmHg respectively (P < 0.01), IPSS decreased by 2.5 +/- 5.5 points (P < 0.01) and Qmax increased by 0.2 +/- 4.7 ml/s (P = 0.46). Changes of Qmax were not significantly correlated with either the baseline or decreased blood pressure, while changes of IPSS had a significant linear correlation with the former but not with the latter.
CONCLUSIONLowering blood pressure in old and middle-aged male patients with essential hypertension can prevent or alleviate the subjective symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, and it reduces IPSS more significantly in those with higher baseline blood pressure.

OBJECTIVE:
To evaluate the sub-acute oral effect of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles on the oxidation/antioxidation biomarkers and inflammatory cytokines in blood, liver, intestine, and colon in rats.
METHODS:
Twenty four 4-week-old clean-grade Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly devided into 4 groups by body weight (n=6, control, low, middle, and high), in which the rats were orally exposed to TiO2 nanoparticles at doses of 0, 2, 10 and 50 mg/kg body weight/day for 28 consecutive days separately. Food intake, body weight and abnormal behaviors during the experiment were recorded. The rats were euthanized on the 29th day. The blood was collected via abdominal aortic method and centrifuged to collect the serum. Tissues from liver, intestine and colon were collected and homogenated. Then enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and microwell plate methods were used to detect oxidation/antioxidation biomarkers including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), total mercapto (T-SH), glutathione disulfide (GSSG), malomdialdehvde (MDA) and inflammatory cytokines including interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in the serum, liver, intestine and colon in the rats.
RESULTS:
Compared with the control group, no significant differences in body weight, food intake and organ coefficients were observed in all the three groups after TiO2 gavage. No significant changes in GSH, GSH-Px, T-SH, and IL-6 were observed. Compared with the control group, significant increase of SOD activity in serum in high dose group, signi-ficant increase of GSSG concentration in intestine in middle and high dose group and significant increase of MDA concentration in liver in low and high dose group were observed. Compared with the control group, a significant increase of TNF-α in liver in middle and high dose group was observed.
CONCLUSION
TiO2 nanoparticle can increase antioxidant enzymes activities in blood, increase oxidative biomarkers in liver and intestine, increase inflammatory cytokines in liver in rats after a 28-day sub-acute orally administration. Among blood, liver, intestine, and colon, liver is most sensitive to the toxicity induced by TiO2 nanoparticles, followed by intestine, blood, and colon in sequence.

The objective of this study was to explore the clinical significance of measuring serum free light chains (sFLC) and to compare with serum total light chains (free and binded) in multiple myeloma (MM). sFLC in 20 newly diagnosed MM patients and 20 cases of healthy people as control were measured by immuno-nephelometric assays; the serum light chains and kappa/lambda ratio were measured in all patients, while immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) tests were carried out at the same time in 18 out of 20 patients. The results showed that the abnormality of serum free light chains and kappa/lambda ratio were found in all of the 20 newly diagnosed MM patients (p < 0.01). The measurement of sFLC showed higher sensitivity than the total serum chains (p < 0.01). It is concluded that the method testing sFLC by immuno-nephelometric assay combined with kappa/lambda ratio is valuable for MM diagnosis, and the measurement of sFLC can be used as one of indicators for MM diagnosis.

AIMTo study the antidiabetic effects of cortex Moutan polysaccharide-2b (CMP-2b) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) rats.
METHODSThe T2DM model rats were induced by a single intravenous injection of low dose streptozotocin (STZ) and intake of high sucrose-fat diet. CMP-2b was given to T2DM rats daily through gavage for 4-5 weeks. The body weight, water and food intake, fasting blood glucose (FBG), glucose tolerance, plasma lipids, serum insulin, and insulin receptor (Ins R) were determined.
RESULTSOral administration of CMP-2b significantly decreased water and food intake, FBG, total cholesterol (Tch), and triglyceride (TG), improved the impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and remarkably raised the number of low affinity InsR and insulin sensitivity index (ISI) in T2DM rats.
CONCLUSIONCMP-2b may be useful for treating T2DM and its complications.

OBJECTIVETo explore the role and mechanism of glucocorticoid (GC) in the harmful bio-effects of electromagnetic irradiation.
METHODSRats were exposed to 65 mW/cm(2) electromagnetic wave for 20 min. At 10 min, 30 min, 3 h, 12 h after irradiation, their learning and memory abilities were tested by Morris water maze. The levels of corticosterone (CORT) in serum were measured by radioimmunoprecipitation assay and the changes of total glucocorticoid receptor (GR) expression and GR nuclear translocation in rat hippocampus were measured by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blot.
RESULTSThe rats had learning and memory deficits at 10 min, 30 min and 3 h after irradiation, but at 12 h had no difference from the normal control. The levels of corticosterone in serum increased significantly at 10 min, 30 min, decreased at 3 h and increased significantly compared with 12 h after irradiation. GR mRNA and total GR protein expression in rat hippocampus had no significant changes at 10 min, 30 min after irradiation. At 3 h, 12 h GR mRNA expression significantly decreased by 69%, 76% respectively and GR total protein decreased by 58%, 67% respectively. There were significant differences between the two groups and the corresponding controls (P<0.05). And compared with the control, the GR nuclear translocation increased significantly at 3 h and 12 h (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONGC may take part in the injury to learning and memory abilities after electromagnetic irradiation, and the non-genomic and genomic effects of GC may play a major role in the early and late stage, respectively.
