BACKGROUND:Porous tantalum with high porosity, low elastic modulus, high friction coefficient has stable biological characters and good biocompatibility, which is considered as an ideal implant material in orthopedic surgery. OBJECTIVE:To review the application situation of porous tantalum used in artificial joints, spine, bone necrosis, defects of bone and so on. METHODS:A computer-based search of PubMed, Wanfang, and VIP databases was performed for relevant articles published from 1990 to 2014 using the keywords of “porous tantalum, biological character, orthopedic applications” in English and Chinese. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Porous tantalum is a kind of good orthopedic implant material, with high porosity, low elastic modulus, high friction coefficient, and good compatibility. Porous tantalum is mostly used in the preparation of integrated acetabular cup, total hip arthroplasty acetabular cup, acetabular reinforcing pad, porous tantalum metal rod, tibial plateau prosthesis, patelar prosthesis and tibial plateau prosthesis, which has achieved good clinical effects.

Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are widespread in the environment. SRB are obligate anaerobes and capable of dissimilatory reduction of sulfate. SRB have application prospects in the control of environmental pollution due to that many pollutants can be removed by SRB. The biological characteristics and metabolic mechanisms of SRB are introduced, and the application of SRB in the treatment of environmental pollution is described in this paper. The research progress of Cr(Ⅵ ) reduction and Cr(Ⅵ ) removal from wastewater by SRB is reviewed, and future direction of research on the control of Cr(Ⅵ ) pollution by SRB is also analysed.

Objective To analyze the epidemiological features and influencing factors of human brucellosis in Qinghai province,and to provide scientific basis for prevention and control of brucellosis.Methods From 2006 to 2010,select the high incidence areas of brucellosis in Qinghai province and five counties(Henan,Dari,Tianjun,Ping'an and Haiyan counties) included in the “Central Subsidies to Local Public Health Special Fund Human Brucellosis Prevention and Control Projects” for the survey point,as well as high-risk employees from Qinghai Biological Pharmaceutical Factory were investigated.Combined with epidemiological questionnaire investigation [done according to the “National Human Brucellosis Surveillance Program(Trial)”],clinical symptoms and signs,confirmed human brucellosis patient were tested by intradermal allergy test,rose bengal plate agglutination test(RBPT) and standard tube agglutination test (SAT),in accordance with “Diagnostic Criteria and Principles of Management of Brucellosis” (GB 15988-1995) and“Diagnostic Criteria for Brucellosis” (WS 269-2007).Results Of 8368 serum samples detected,347 were RBPT positive,and the positive rate was 4.15％;5346 serum samples were tested by SAT,180 were positive,and the positive rate was 3.37％.In June 2009,112 employees in Qinghai Biological Pharmaceutical Factory were investigated on a follow-up survey,83 were RBPT positive,the positive rate was 74.11％; 58 were SAT positive,the positive rate was 51.79％.Eight of them were new cases and 4 were chronic brucellosis.Twenty five new cases were reported between 2006 and 2010.The peak incidence was from March to July.Most of the cases were herdsmen.ConclusionStrengthening animal quarantine,strengthening public education,and improving protection awareness,can effectively control the disease brucellosis.

Abstract:Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is one of the most common liver diseases in the world. Long-term alcoholism causes a series of pathological changes in the liver, which eventually leads to the occurrence of liver diseases with an increasing incidence. At present, significant progress has been made in the pathogenesis and pathological development of alcoholic liver disease, but the relevant mechanism of ALD has not been thoroughly studied. It is necessary to improve the existing animal model or establish a new, more comprehensive animal ALD model to simulate human ALD. Experimental animal models of ALD, especially rodents, are often used to simulate human ALD, and the ideal rodent ALD model can effectively simulate all aspects of alcohol in human liver. But so far, the commonly used animal models all have certain defects, and there is no complete animal model that can simulate human ALD. This paper reviewed the pathogenesis of ALD, related methods and influencing factors of ALD model, and provided a theoretical basis for relevant researchers to establish the ALD rodent model. 

Objective To investigate symptom characteristics and their their prevalence in terminally ill patients with ovarian carcinoma.Methods A retrospective study was carried out based on clinical data of 98 terminally ill patients with ovarian carcinoma who died in our hospital during January 1995 to December 2004.Fifteen most common symptoms were analyzed with a focus on the followings:symptom incidence,survival time after symptom occurrence,regularity of symptom cluster,and common causes of death.Fifteen symptoms were:pain,cachexia,pleural effusion and ascites,dyspnea,fever,intestinal obstruction,renal failure,bone marrow depression,lung infection,hemorrhage,deep venous thrombosis (DVT),intestinal or pancreatic fistula,mycotic infection,jaundice and emergency conditions.Results (1)The most prevalent symptom was pleural effusion and ascites(63%),followed by pain(60%), cachexia(59%),dyspnea(52%)and intestinal obstruction(49 %).(2)The symptom which lasted longest survival time was mycotic infection(77 days),followed by intestinal or pancreatic fistula(75 days), intestinal obstruction(67 days),pain(60 days)and eachexia(60 days).Symptoms such as bone marrow depression,renal failure,dyspnea and emergency conditions were comparatively critical associated with shorter survival times(14,13,12,7 days,respectively).(3)Terminal symptoms occurred typically in clusters,with 4.9?1.5 symptoms per case.Of 98 cases,84 cases(86%)had 4 or more symptoms,with the median survival time of 63 days from the last day of anti-cancer therapy,and a slow death process.The remaining 14 cases(14%)with 3 or fewer symptoms survived only 25 days,of which 10 cases(71%)died of emergency diseases.The survival time for two groups was significantly different(P

Objective To study the clinical correlated factors of renal damage in henoch-schonlein purpura (HSP).Methods One hundred cases with HSP were retrospectively studied. Accoding to the urinary route examination, the patients were devided into 2 groups, HSP with (49 cases) and without renal damaged (51 cases). Objective To observe the status of oxidative stress and activity of alkaline phosphatase(ALP) in rats exposed to high fluoride for the different periods and to analyze the effect of fluoride on the activity of ALP and oxidative stress in fluorosis rats. Methods Twenty-four Wistar rats were divided into control and high-fluoride groups according to their body mass, 12 rats in each group. The control group drank tap water(sodium fluoride concentrations < 1 mg/L), and high-fluoride group drank tap water containing sodium fluoride(sodium fluoride concentrations 221 mg/L). On a standard diet and water available ad hbitum, each rat was measured body weight once a week in 1,4,8,12 week. The biochemical techniques were used to test the indicators of oxidative stress including malonaldehyde(MDA), superoxidedismutase(SOD), glutathione peroxidase(GPx), uric acid and activity of ALP in serum of fluorosis rats. Results There was a interaction between fluoride and time in the activity of ALP (F = 4.690,P < 0.05). The activity of ALP was obviously higher in rats exposed to fluoride for 1,12 week [ (19.29± 3.69), (15.72 ± 0.79)kU/L] compared to the control[ (14.08 ± 1.99),(12.91 ± 3.97)kU/L, all P< 0.05] ; the level of MDA was obviously higher in rats exposed to fluoride for 1,4 week [ ( 13.37 ± 4.38 ), ( 11.82 ± 2.08) μmol/L ] compared to the respective control[ (8.75 ± 3.24), (7.42 ± 2.62)μmol/L, all P < 0.05]; difference of SOD and GPx between control and high-fluoride groups was not statistically significant(all P > 0.05); the level of uric acid in serum was significantly higher in high-fluoride group for 1,4 week[ (89.53 ± 13.21 ), (88.47 ± 19.78 )μmol/L] compared to the control [ (77.79 ± 11.43 ), (65.42 ± i 3.42) μ mol/L, all P < 0.05 ], but the level of uric acid showed lower in high-fluoride group for 8,12 week [(67.21 ± 9.44), (73.95 ± 9.52)μmol/L] compared to the control [(77.79 ± 11.43), (65.42 ± 13.42)μmol/L]. Conclusions Effect of overdose fluoride on ALP is time-dependant. On the other hand,overdose fluoride stimulates the status of oxidative stress in a way unrelated to the exposure period.
