Objective:To explore the effect of regular aerobic exercise on oxidative stress, inflammatory reaction and apoptosis with a rat model of colitis.Methods:Forty-five C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into a control group, a model group and a model exercise group, each of 15. Colitis was induced in the rats of the model and model exercise groups through administration of 3.5% sodium dextran sulfate. The control group and the model group were kept quiet in their cages, while the model exercise group performed voluntary wheel running for 8 weeks after the successful modelling. Any histopathological changes in the colon tissue were observed after hematoxylin and eosin staining. Oxidative stress, inflammatory reaction and apoptosis were measured from colon tissue homogenates. Results:Compared with the control group, the average expression of the tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) as well as levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and Caspase-3 activity and the protein expression of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) p65, apoptosis inducing factor (AIF), cytochrome c (Cyt C) and Bax had all increased significantly in the other two groups, while the levels of IL-10 and glutathione (GSH), the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and the protein expression of Bcl-2 protein had decreased significantly in the model group. Compared with the model group, the average content of TNF-α, IL-1 β, IL-6, PGE2, ROS, MDA and NO, the activity of iNOS and Caspase-3 and the protein expression of COX2, NF-κB p65, AIF, CytC and Bax had decreased significantly, while that of IL-10 and GSH, the activity of SOD and GPx and the protein expression of Bcl-2 protein had increased significantly in the model exercise group. Conclusion:Regular aerobic exercise has a protective effect against colitis through improving oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis, at least in rats.

8.Protective effect of ethyl pyruvate on barrier function of intestinal mucosa in dogs with septic shock.
Chinese Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery 2008;11(2):177-180
OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of ethyl pyruvate on barrier function of intestinal mucosa in dogs with septic shock.
METHODSTwenty dogs with septic shock induced by lipopolysaccharides(LPS) were randomly divided into two groups. Dogs randomly received placebo (Ringer's solution, control group, n=8) or ethyl pyruvate in lactated Ringer's solution (0.05 g/kg loading dose over 10 mins, thereafter 0.05 g.kg(-1).h(-1) for 12 hours, EP treatment group, n=12). The diamine oxidase(DAO) activity and D-lactate content were detected at the 0, 8 th, 12 th and 24 th hour of septic shock. Animals were sacrificed at the 24 th hour after septic shock and the jejunal tissue was taken for histopathological examination.
RESULTSThe levels of plasma DAO and D-lactate were significantly elevated in both groups after septic shock than those before septic shock. The changes in intestinal parameters of hemoperfusion and permeability in EP treatment group were significantly lowered than those in control group. Inflammation of small intestinal mucosa was more severe in control group than that in EP group, and the pathologic score was significantly lower in EP group(2.33+/-0.25) than that in control group(3.39+/-0.38)(P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONEthyl pyruvate can lessen intestinal permeability and protect intestinal barrier function in dogs with septic shock.

Objective To investigate the clinical results of the primary total hip replacement (THR) and the secondary THR after failed internal fixation in the elderly patients with displaced femoral neck fracture so as to find the optimal treatment for displaced femoral neck fractures in the elderly patients. Methods From April 2001 to April 2007,16 patients (Study Group) treated with a secondary THR after failed internal fixation and 20 patients (Control Group) treated with a primary THR were enrolled in the study and followed up. There were seven males and nine females, at average age of 66. 5 years (50-85 years) and with mean follow-up period of 58. 25 months (24-96 months) in the Study Group. There were six males and 14 females, at average age of 68.1 years (51-83 years) and with mean follow-up period of 49.50 months (24-70 months) in the Control Group. All patients were active and lucid before they suffered fractures. Blood loss and operation duration in THR were compared. Hip function (Harris score) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL, KPS index score) were assessed during the follow-up after THR. Results Operative duration was (115.63 ±34.35) minutes in Study Group and (91.25 ±15.80) minutes in Control Group (P<0.05). Blood loss was (546.86 ±377.04) ml in Study Group and (320.00 ±155.94) ml in Control Group (P<0.05). At follow up, Harris score and KPS index score were (87. 25 ±7. 53) points and (95. 00 ±5. 16) points respectively in Study Group, and (90.20±5.46) points and (96.00 ±0.73) points respectively in Control Group (P>0.05). There were no infections or re-operations in two groups, but with one death in each group during the follow-up. Conclusions THR is the optimal treatment for displaced femoral neck fractures in the elderly patients. The secondary THR after failed internal fixation has higher risks in operation compared with the primary THR for a displaced femoral neck fracture in the elderly patient.

Objective To develop a new method for correction of the deformity of the complete bilateral cleft lip with short pre-lip. Methods Two specimens with the complete bilateral cleft lip was chosen to investigate the arterial supply to the pre-lip. The arteries were observed by radiography when the specimen was infused with lead oxide. 16 patients with the complete bilateral cleft lip and shortage in the length of pre-lip were enrolled in this study. Taking advantage of the unique character of arterial supply of complete bilateral cleft lip, those with short pre-lip were corrected. Photos of them were taken when preand post-operation for further measurement. And more than 1 year following-up was conducted to judge if the results were good enough or not. 30 babies were chosen as a control group to confirm the results of surgury objectively. Results Post nasal septal arteries were found to supply the pre-lip of the bilateral complete cleft lip. Appearance of 16 patients was good after surgery or 1 years later. There was no statistical significant difference between the patients and control group in the measurement data but nasal-lip angle. Conclusion It is an effective way to correct deformity of the bilateral cleft lip with short pre-lip by taking advantage of post nasal septal arterie's flap.
