BACKGROUND/AIMS: Inflammatory pseudotumor rarely occurs in the liver. However, it is important to discriminate it from malignant hepatic tumor in order to avoid unnecessary surgery. We aimed to elucidate the characteristic features of this disease entity by analyzing our experiences and by reviewing the related literatures. METHODS: Fifteen patients were enrolled during a recent three-year period. The patients were pathologically diagnosed with inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver, and their clinical and imaging findings were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: Our study population was composed of ten men and five women, and their mean age was 60.3+/-9.2 years. Their initial diagnoses were inflammatory pseudotumor (n=8), malignant tumors (n=3) and abscess (n=4). Twelve of 15 patients were associated with biliary diseases such as biliary stone, gallbladder cancer, empyema or cholangiocarcinoma. The most common symptom was abdominal pain. The most common CT and MR findings could be summarized as a delayed hyperattenuating mass with an internal hypoattenuating component. The tumors were solitary in 13 patients and multiple in two patients. The lesions regressed spontaneously in seven patients. Four patients were treated by antibiotics and 3 patients by surgical resection. CONCLUSIONS: Inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver seems to have relatively common clinical and imaging features, as described above. However, these features are not disease-specific; thus, preoperative histologic confirmation is necessary to avoid unnecessary surgery.

Inflammatory pseudotumor, also known as inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor and plasma cell granuloma, is an uncommon low-grade lesion composed of spindle cells admixed with mature plasma cells and other inflammatory cells, such as histiocytes, lymphocytes, and eosinophils. Here, we describe the mammographic and ultrasonographic findings of a case of an inflammatory pseudotumor of the breast in a 60-year-old woman. With the suspicion of malignancy, core needle biopsy and surgical excision confirmed the mass as being an inflammatory pseudotumor of the breast.

The authors describe a rare case of inflammatory pseudotumor involving the clivus, where a soft tissue mass lesion, with extension into the prevertebral retropharyngeal space and the cavernous sinuses, was detected by CT and MRI. The mass resembled a malignant tumor or aggressive infectious lesion, and the final diagnosis of inflammatory pseudotumor was a diagnosis of exclusion, decided after histopathological examination.

5.Chronic Granulomatous Inflammation of the Eye lids.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2000;41(6):1279-1285
Granulomatous inflammation is characterized by granuloma formation with a cellular infiltrate of epithelioid cells, giant cells, and chronic inflam-matory cells. It could be diagnosed as a subtype of inflammatory pseudotumor when such identifiable causes of granulomatous inflammation have been ruled out. We performed excisional biopsy on 3 patients who complained of upper eyelid mass. The levator muscle was mainly affected in two patients and the lacrimal gland in one patient. Microscopic examination of the mass demonstrated chronic granulomatous inflammation including non-caseating necrosis, diffuse chronic inflammatory cell infiltrates, and granuloma com-posed of histiocytes, multinucleated giant cells, lymphocytes, and epithelioid cells in all 3 patients. There was no evidence of foreign material and infec-tion with tuberculosis, mycosis, and parasites. The diagnosis of sarcoidosis, connective tissue disease, and Wegener's granulomatosis could be ruled out through the basic hematological test, chest radiograph, and blood tests such as angiotensin converting enzyme, lysozyme, antinuclear antigen, and anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody. We experienced 3 cases of chronic granulomatous inflammation of the eyelids without identifiable causes which responds to excision and postoperative steroid therapy without recurrences.

Inflammatory pseudotumor (plasma cell granuloma) of the lung is an uncommon nonneoplastic tumor of unknown origin. This tumor typically manifests as a solitary, peripheral, and sharply circumscribed mass. Multiple lesions are seen in about 5% of cases. Resection is recommended for both diagnosis and treatment, and this tumor does not generally recur after complete resection. Here, we report a case of recurrent inflammatory pseudotumor after complete resection; the recurrence was detected as a series of bilateral consolidated lesions with an internal air bronchogram. This is an unusual finding with regard to inflammatory pseudotumors.
