Background:Complete resection of locally advanced sigmoid colon cancer (LASCC) is sometimes diffcult. Patients with LASCC have a dismal prognosis and poor quality of life, which has encouraged the evaluation of alternative multimodality treatments. This prospective study aimed to assess the feasibility and effcacy of neoadjuvant chemora?diotherapy (neoCRT) followed by surgery as treatment of selected patients with unresectable LASCC.
Methods:We studied the patients with unresectable LASCC who received neoCRT followed by surgery between October 2010 and December 2012. The neoadjuvant regimen consisted of external?beam radiotherapy to 50Gy and capecitabine?based chemotherapy every 3weeks. Surgery was scheduled 6–8weeks after radiotherapy.
Results:Twenty?one patients were included in this study. The median follow?up was 42months (range, 17–57months). All patients completed neoCRT and surgery. Resection with microscopically negative margins (R0 resection) was achieved in 20 patients (95.2%). Pathologic complete response was observed in 8 patients (38.1%). Multivisceral resection was necessary in only 7 patients (33.3%). Two patients (9.5%) experienced grade 2 postopera?tive complications. No patients died within 30days after surgery. For 18 patients with pathologic M0 (ypM0) disease, the cumulative probability of 3?year local recurrence?free survival, disease?free survival and overall survival was 100.0%, 88.9% and 100.0%, respectively. For all 21 patients, the cumulative probability of 3?year overall survival was 95.2% and bladder function was well preserved.
Conclusion:For patients with unresectable LASCC, preoperative chemoradiotherapy and surgery can be performed safely and may result in an increased survival rate.

Acta Physiologica Sinica 2007;59(6):697-706
Synapses are inter-neuronal connections that are fundamental working units in neural networks. How synapses are molecularly constructed is a fascinating question, which attracted scientists' attention for many decades. Neuromuscular junction, a field pioneered by Te-Pei FENG and many others, has been an excellent model for studying synaptogenesis and paved the way for our understanding of the synapse formation in the central nervous system. Recent studies shed new light on the molecular mechanisms of central synapse formation by discovering a group of cell adhesion molecules exerting potent synaptogenic effects. This review will focus on those cell adhesion molecules which can induce central synapse formation when expressed in non-neuronal cells.

Journal of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Medical Sciences) 2003;23(4):373-379
To study the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9 in human prostate cancer, matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9 were immunohistochemically detected in tissues of prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Our results showed that matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9 levels in prostate cancer were much higher than those in tissues of BPH, with the cancer invasion being positively correlated with the expression of the metalloproteinases. It is concluded that matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9 are better molecular markers, which are of help in the diagnosis and prediction of prognosis of prostate cancer.

STOMATOLOGY 2024;44(6):448-451
Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis(TMJOA)is characterized by progressive cartilage degeneration, subchondral bone remodeling, chronic inflammation in the synovial tissue and osteophyte formation.Chondrocyte apoptosis is one of the main factors of cartilage degeneration.Prevention and treatment of TMJOA can be achieved by inhibiting premature or excessive chondrocyte apoptosis.Primary cilia protruding from the surface of chondrocytes can sense mechanical stimulation and induce chondrocyte differentiation.Stud-ying the role of primary cilia in TMJOA will help us understand the pathogenesis of TMJOA and construct a reasonable and effective treatment strategy.

The impact of maintenance therapy on progression?free survival and overall survival as well as quality of life of Chi?nese patients with metastatic colorectal cancer has long been under discussion. Recently, some phase III clinical trials have revealed that maintenance therapy can signiifcantly prolong the progression?free survival while maintain an acceptable safety proifle. Based on this evidence and common treatment practice in China, we now generated one Expert Consensus on Maintenance Treatment for Metastatic Colorectal Cancer in China to further specify the neces?sity of maintenance therapy, suitable candidates for such treatment, and appropriate regimens.

AIM: To evaluate the effect of remimazolam on early postoperative cognitive function in elderly patients with hip fracture based on a randomized controlled trial. METHODS: A total of 106 elderly patients, aged 65-90 years, ASA grade Ⅱ or III, who underwent hip fracture surgery under combined spinal-epidural anesthesia in the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University from December 2022 to June 2023 and met the inclusion criteria, were selected and randomized into remimazolam group (group R) and propofol group (group P) according to the random number table, with 53 cases in each group. Patients in group P received a slow intravenous injection of propofol at a dose of 0.3-0.5 mg / kg (injection time of 1min), followed by a pump infusion at 0.5-3 mg · kg

Activation of osteoclasts during orthodontic tooth treatment is a prerequisite for alveolar bone resorption and tooth movement. However, the key regulatory molecules involved in osteoclastogenesis during this process remain unclear. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a newly identified class of functional RNAs that regulate cellular processes, such as gene expression and translation regulation. Recently, lncRNAs have been reported to be involved in osteogenesis and bone formation. However, as the most abundant noncoding RNAs in vivo, the potential regulatory role of lncRNAs in osteoclast formation and bone resorption urgently needs to be clarified. We recently found that the lncRNA Nron (long noncoding RNA repressor of the nuclear factor of activated T cells) is highly expressed in osteoclast precursors. Nron is downregulated during osteoclastogenesis and bone ageing. To further determine whether Nron regulates osteoclast activity during orthodontic treatment, osteoclastic Nron transgenic (Nron cTG) and osteoclastic knockout (Nron CKO) mouse models were generated. When Nron was overexpressed, the orthodontic tooth movement rate was reduced. In addition, the number of osteoclasts decreased, and the activity of osteoclasts was inhibited. Mechanistically, Nron controlled the maturation of osteoclasts by regulating NFATc1 nuclear translocation. In contrast, by deleting Nron specifically in osteoclasts, tooth movement speed increased in Nron CKO mice. These results indicate that lncRNAs could be potential targets to regulate osteoclastogenesis and orthodontic tooth movement speed in the clinic in the future.
