PURPOSE: The purposes of this study are to discribe the high-resolution computed tomographic (HRCT) findings of pulmonary histiocytosis X and to evaluate the relationship between the extent of the lesion on HRCT and pulmonary function test (PFT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the HRCT findings of 8 patients with pathologically proved pulmonary histiocytosis X. The morphological pattern and incidence of the lesions were evaluated. The extent of the lesions were correlated with the results of PFT by calculating Spearman correlation. RESULTS: The most common HRCT findings were thick-walled cysts (n=8) followed by nodules (n=7). Other associated findings were reticulation, ground-glass opacification, and conglomerate nodules. The extent of the disease on HRCT was correlated inversely with percent predicted value of functional vital capacity. CONCLUSION: Common HRCT findings of pulmonary histiocytosis X were cysts with irregular wall thickening and nodules. The extent of the disease on HRCT correlated with the severity of restrictive pattern of PFT.

We have observed that the companion shadow of the upper rib may be misinterpreted as a small pnemothorax or pleural plaque associated with asbestosis. To observe the radiographic characteristics of the normal companion shadow, we analyzed, on the posteroanterior(PA) chest radiographs, the companion shadow of 50 normal cases. Factors such as occurrence on each rib, the sharpness of the margin, the relative position to the rib, the shape and the thickness were observed. Also, we analyzed the displaced pleura of 4 pneumothorax cases to differentiate their frndings from the findings of normal companion shadows. On 50 normal chest radiographs, 192 compaion shadows were observed on the first to fourth ribs. In 173 of those shadows, the visceral margin of the companion shadow on the second rib simulated pneumothorax more closely than those on any othe rivs due to its apical location and thinness. In six of 50 normal cases, the companion shadow on the first or second rib showed an inw rdly convex lower margin, mimicking pleural plaque. The compaion shadow was suggested on the plain chest radiograph by the following characteristics imultiplicity(47/50), thicker than normal pleura(3/4), persistent on serial filma with the same shape and specific location(4/4).

The Korean Association of Medical Colleges (KAMC) has launched as a corporate aggregate in August 2008, since the inauguration meeting as "Korean Association of Medical School Deans" 24 years before. The mission of KAMC is to be the representing agency of medical education in Korea, producing policies and strategies, suggesting and influencing government agencies related to medical education. Fat containing masses, except mediastinal lipomatosis, of the thorax are uncommon. In spite of uncommonoccurences, as CT can detect not only the fat content but also the presence and character of the non-fattycomponent of the mass, accurate preoperative diagnosis can usually be made in most cases of fat containingmediastinal masses. Authors report 6 cases of fat containing mediastinal masses, that were diagnosedpreoperatively by CT scan, comprising 2 cases of limpoma(combined with plexiform neurofibroma in a case), 1liposarcoma, 1 thymolipoma, and 2 cases of omental hernia through Morgagni foramen.
