PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of job stress and health promotion behaviors with the quality of life in female riot police officers. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was adopted, and a convenience sample of 182 female riot police officers from 5 Metropolitan Police Agencies in South Korea. All participants completed a self-administered survey questionnaire that assessed job stress, health promotion behavior, and quality of life in May 2018. The collected data were analyzed using t-test, analysis of variance, and correlation and multiple linear regression analyses, all of which were executed using SPSS/WIN 23.0 and STATA 13.0. RESULTS: The level of job stress among participants was moderate, and the mean was 45.25 out of a maximum possible score of 100. The mean scores that emerged for health promotion behaviors and the quality of life were 2.62 (maximum=4) and 56.59 (maximum=100), respectively. Job stress (r=−.380, p < .001) and health promotion behaviors (r=.559, p < .001) were correlated with the quality of life. The statistically significant predictors of the quality of life were job stress (β=−.212, p=.001) and health promotion behaviors (β=.417, p < .001). CONCLUSION The variables that were associated with the quality of life of female riot police officers were job stress and health promotion behaviors. Therefore, interventions that can enhance job stress management and health promotion behaviors are needed to improve the quality of life of female riot police officers.

Purpose: This literature review aimed to evaluate Cox’s interaction model of client health behavior (IMCHB) as used in studies on women’s health. Methods: Using keyword combinations of “women” and “IMCHB” or “interaction model of client health behavior,” we searched the PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, and RISS databases for studies on the promotion of women’s health published from January 2009 to April 2019. Finally, 11 studies were selected and evaluated according to seven criteria for theory evaluation, which combined Fawcett’s theory evaluation criteria and Chinn and Kramer’s criteria. Results: We found that the IMCHB corresponds to a verifiable practical level of a middle-range theory, although it may be partially abstract. It contains all four concepts of the metaparadigm of nursing, in terms of a holistic philosophical approach. A theoretical evaluation demonstrated that the IMCHB has significance, generality, testability, empirical adequacy, and pragmatic adequacy for nursing practice and research. However, the lack of clear conceptual definitions and the presence of complex relationships among concepts resulted in a lack of internal consistency and parsimony. Conclusion According to an in-depth verification through a review of the literature, the IMCHB has been used as a health promotion intervention strategy for various populations of women and has led to useful results in nursing practice. The IMCHB was confirmed to be a suitable theory for experimental and clinical research. Future research can build on this middle-range theory for women’s health research and practice.

We investigated the frequency of sleep disturbances and the association between sleep disturbances and glucoregulation in type 2 diabetic patients. The frequency of sleep disturbances in 614 type 2 diabetic patients was investigated using validated sleep questionnaires. There were 381 male and 233 female patients. The mean age was 59.7 +/- 11.1 yr; the mean body mass index was 24.9 +/- 4.4 kg/m2; the mean HbA1c was 7.8% +/- 1.5%; and the mean duration of diabetes was 10.3 +/- 8.4 yr. The questionnaires revealed insomnia in 48.2% of the patients while 8.5% reported excessive daytime sleepiness. A total of 49% of the patients was poor sleepers, while 28.5% had depression. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that there was no significant association between HbA1c and other sleep disturbances, such as poor sleep, insomnia, and short duration of sleep. Sleep disturbances were very common in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, whereas there was no association between poor or short sleep and glucoregulation. Awareness and identifying sleep complaints in such patients are necessary to improve their quality of daily life.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the usefulness of combination of bone formation and resorption markers in predicting the bone mineral density (BMD), and to see there was a correlation with years since menopause(YSM) and BMD according to the combination of bone turnover marker and bone sites. METHOD: BMD and bone turnover marker(serum osteocalcin and urine deoxypyridinoline) was assessed in 266 healthy postmenopausal women at the time of first visiting in postmenopausal clinic and were divided into six groups based on combination of their reference range in bone turnover markers. RESULTS: We evaluated the discrimination power of the combination of bone turnover marker in assessing BMD among the six gorups, there was no statistically significant difference in BMD of Lumbar2-4 and Femur (Neck, Ward. Trochanter). In case of both higher than reference range of osteocalcin and deoxypyridinoline(D-pyr), BMD of Lumbar2-4 and Femur in postmenopausal women had a negative correlation with YSM. In case of higher than normal reference range of D-pyr and within the reference range of osteocalcin, BMD of Femur had a negative correlation with YSM. CONCLUSION: Thus each bone site had its own good combination of bone marker levels to correlate the BMD according to the YSM.

OBJECTIVES: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods are known to have validity for capturing momentary changes in variables over time. However, data quality relies on the completion rates, which are influenced by both participants' characteristics and study designs. This study applied an EMA method using a mobile application to assess momentary moods and stress levels in patients with Moyamoya disease to examine variables associated with EMA completion rates. METHODS: Adults with Moyamoya disease were recruited from a tertiary hospital in Seoul. Patients with cognitive impairment were excluded. The EMA survey was loaded as a mobile application onto the participants' personal smartphones. Notifications were sent at semi-random intervals four times a day for seven consecutive days. Daily completion rates were calculated as the percentage of completed responses per day; overall completion rates were calculated as the proportion of completed responses per total of the 28 scheduled measures in the study and assessed through a descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and regression analysis, with mixed modeling to identify the point at which the daily completion rate significantly decreased. RESULTS: A total of 98 participants responded (mean age, 41.00 ± 10.30 years; 69.4% female; 75.5% married). The overall completion rate was 70.66%, with no gender or age differences found. The daily completion rate decreased significantly after day 5 (p = 0.029). CONCLUSIONS: Obtaining a good completion rate is essential for quality data in EMA methods. Strategic approaches to a study design should be established to encourage participants throughout a study to improve completion rates.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to describe the process of utilizing a mobile application for ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to collect data on stress and mood in daily life setting. METHODS: A mobile application for the Android operating system was developed and installed with a set of questions regarding momentary mood and stress into a smartphone of a participant. The application sets alarms at semi-random intervals in 60-minute blocks, four times a day for 7 days. After obtaining all momentary affect and stress, the questions to assess the usability of the mobile EMA application were also administered. RESULTS: The data were collected from 97 police officers working in Gyeonggi Province of South Korea. The mean completion rate was 60.0% ranging from 3.5% to 100%. The means of positive and negative affect were 18.34 of 28 and 19.09 of 63. The mean stress was 17.92 of 40. Participants responded that the mobile application correctly measured their affect (4.34 ± 0.83) and stress (4.48 ± 0.62) of 5-point Likert scale. CONCLUSIONS: Our study investigated the process of utilizing a mobile application to assess momentary affect and stress at repeated times. We found challenges regarding adherence to the research protocol, such as completion and delay of answering after alarm notification. Despite this inherent issue of adherence to the research protocol, the EMA still has advantages of reducing recall bias and assessing the actual moment of interest at multiple time points that improves ecological validity.

Purpose: This study aimed to explore the existing literature on frailty experienced by patients with prostate cancer (PC) receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Materials and Methods: Database and manual searches were conducted to identify relevant studies published in English, with no limitation on the year of publication, according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines. Four databases—PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and CINAHL—were used for database searches and reference lists, related journals, and Google Scholar were used for manual searches. Results: A total of 12 studies were analyzed for this scoping review. Of these, only 2 were intervention studies, and 1 was a randomized controlled trial. Among the two intervention studies, the multidisciplinary intervention program, including psychological counseling, nutritional coaching, and supervised group physical exercise did not show significant improvement in frailty. In contrast, high-dose vitamin D supplementation significantly decreased frailty. The conceptual and operational definitions of frailty used in each study varied, and the most used one was mainly focused on physical functions. As a result of analyzing the other health-related variables associated with frailty in patients with PC receiving ADT, age, metastases, comorbidities, and incident falls were related to a high frailty level. As for the physiological index, high levels of C-reactive protein, and interleukin-6, and fibrinogen, low levels of total testosterone, lymphocyte count, and creatinine were associated with a high level of frailty. A few studies explored the relationship between psychological and cognitive variables and frailty. Conclusions Further research related to frailty in patients with PC receiving ADT should be conducted, and effective interventions to manage frailty should be developed. Additionally, research that considers not only the physical domain of frailty but also the psychological, cognitive, and social domains needs to be conducted.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Early gastric cancer (EGC) with ulcerations can be treated via endoscopic resection (ER) when it is differentiated pathologically, limited to the mucosa, and <3 cm in diameter. The presence of ulceration is a key factor in deciding treatment strategies and is usually diagnosed during endoscopic examination. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether ulcerations in EGC can be clearly defined among endoscopists and which factors are related to the differences. METHODS: A survey questionnaire, composed of demographic features and endoscopic images of seven patients with EGC, was presented to the endoscopists via e-mail. The endoscopists were asked whether such patients have ulcerations in the lesions. RESULTS: The questionnaires were e-mailed to 197 endoscopists, and 103 doctors replied. The presence of an endoscopic ulceration was defined differently among the endoscopists, depending on the duration of endoscopic practice and the experience of endoscopic submucosal dissection. The differences were especially high in the lesions without mucosal breaks and converging folds, which were expected to be viewed as non-ulcerative. CONCLUSIONS: Before ER, endoscopic ulcerations in EGC must be reviewed by experienced endoscopists to reduce overestimations, and adequate educational programs for trainees should be established.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although colonoscopy is not indicated in patients with hematochezia, many surgeons, internists, and physicians are recommending colonoscopy for these patients in Korea. The aim of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic value of colonoscopy for patients with hematochezia. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the data of colonoscopy between January 2010 and December 2010. A total of 321 patients among 3,038 colonoscopies (10.6%) underwent colonoscopy to evaluate the cause of hematochezia. The patients with previous colorectal surgery (2) or polypectomy (5) were excluded. We analyzed endoscopic diagnoses. Advanced neoplastic polyps were defined as adenomas with villous histology or high grade dysplasia, or adenomas more than 10 mm in diameter. RESULTS: Hemorrhoid was the most common diagnosis (217 cases, 67.6%). Polyps were detected in 93 patients (29.0%), but advanced neoplastic polyps were found in only 14 cases (4.4%). Colorectal cancers were diagnosed in 18 patients (5.6%) including 14 rectal cancers. There was no cancer located above sigmoid-descending junction. Diverticuli were detected in 41 patients (12.8%) but there was only one case of suspected diverticular bleeding. Colitis was diagnosed in 24 patients (7.5%). Other lesions included acute anal fissure, rectal tumor, stercoral ulcer, and radiation proctitis. CONCLUSIONS: The colonoscopy had little value in patients with hematochezia because the most pathologic lesions were located below sigmoid colon. The first choice of diagnosis in patients with hematochezia is sigmoidoscopy.
