A 4-year-old boy have had widespread, multiple, dark brownish, verrucous ]papular plaques on the neck, left chest, right side of abdomen, back and penile skin since birth. Clinical features and light and electron microscopic findings were consistent with ichthyosis hystrix. The patient was successfully treated with systemic administration of etretinate and vitamin E.

Bowen's disease is an intraepidermal squarnous cell carcinoma referred to also as squamous cell carcimona in situ. Approximately two-thirds of Bowen's disease consist of solitary lesion while remaining show multiple lesions, We experienced a 68-year old male patient who had multiple erythematous pathes and plaques covered with scales and grayish crusts developing on the trunk and both lower extremities. At first, clinically we suspected psoriasis, seborrheic keratosis, eczema and mycosis fungoides, and finally histopathologic features revealed Bowen's disease showing transformation to invasive squamous cell carcinorna.

We studied the usefulness of prostate specific antigen (PSA) as well as prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) as marker of prostatic cancer in twelve cases of advanced prostatic cancer including 4 or stage C and 8 of stage D, 50 cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and 50 cases of nonprostatic diseases as normal control. The positive rates of PSA were 100% for prostatic cancer, 20% for BPH and O% for nonprostatic diseases, and those of PAP were 75% for prostate cancer, 8% for BPH and 2% for nonprostatic diseases. These results indicated hat PSA is more sensitive than PAP but less specific than PAP in diagnosis of prostatic cancer. Serum PSP level was correlated with the weight of prostate in BPH patients. Serum PSA level determined during the follow-up after endocrine therapy for prostatic cancer reflected the clinical course of the patients. Because of its relatively low specificity, PSA alone may not be useful for early diagnosis of prostatic cancer. If in combination with other diagnostic modalities, it may be useful in early diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of prostatic cancer within restricted limits.

This study is comprehend the reality and characteristics of C.V.A. patients and to be helpful to its prevention and cure by resarching C.V.A. outpatient or inpatients who visited some of the oriental hospitals during three months from April 1 to June 30 1996 which are located in Taegu and Kungbuk Province, and concluded as follow: 1. The general characteristics of the subjects were: (1) 52.3% of the subjects were male. (2) In terms of age, 34.7% of them were in the sixties. (3) In terms of job, 28.5% of them were housewives(the highest percentage). (4) 77.6% of them had their spouses. (5) 67.2% of them were middle class. (6) In terms of educational background, 24.6% of them were literate of korean alphabets, and 23.4% were elemantary school gradurates. (7) 51.6% of them were outpatients. 2. 73.3% of the subjects experienced C.V.A. for the first time, and 23.1% were at recurrence, and 3.6% were chronic. 3. In terms of C.V.A. types, 49.8% of the subjects had cerebral hemorrhage, and 41.9% had cerebral infarction, and 8.3% had the others. In cerebral hemorrage, the percentage in "male, forties, job of sales service, unmarried, middle class, high educational background" were higher than the others respectively. And in cerebral infarction, the percentages in female, over seventies, official job, married, upper class were higher than the others respectively. 4. In terms of reasons of C.V.A. 49.5% of them were high blood pressure, and 24.2% were high stress, and 18.8% were overwork, and 4.0% were fatness, and 2.5% were heredity. In high blood pressure, the percentages in "high age, teacher, unmarried, lower class, low educa-tional background" were higher than the others respectively. 5. In terms of family members' C.V.A. , 56.7% of the subjects answered negatively, and 43.3% positively. In terms of the diseases which they had now except for C.V.A., 33.6% of them had hypertention, and 16.2% had diabetes, and 9.4% had neuralgia, and 4.0% had heart disease, and 16.6% had the otehrs, and 20.2% had no other disease. In heart disease, the percentages in "male, teachers, middlelower class, middle school graduates, inpatients" were higher than the others respectively. In neuralgia, the percentages in "fifties and sixties, housewives, spouse alive, upper class, literate of Korean alphabet" were higher than the others respectively. In terms of the diseases which they had now except for C.V.A., 33.6% of them had hypertension, and 16.2% had diabetes, and 9.4% had neuralgia, and 4.0% had heart diseases, the percentages in "fifties and sixties, housewives, spouse alive, upper class, literate of Korean alphabets" were higher than the others respectively. 6. In terms of the diseases which they had before C.V.A., 22.4% of them had hypertension, and 18.8% had diabetes, and 8.1% had heart diseases, and 11.2% had neuralgia and arthritis, and 7.8% had cancer, and 21.7% had the others. 7. In terms of exercise behaviors before C.V.A., 41.2% of them did nothing, and 58.8% did sometimes. 8. In terms of fatness level by self judgement, 36.1% of them thought "proper", and 41.1% thought themselves "fat(the highst percentage), and housewives(45.5%) thought themselves "fat". 9. In terms of favorite food, 50.2% of them liked meat, and 33.2% liked vegetables, and 13.0% liked fish. 10. In terms of fancy things of C.V.A. patients, 57.0% of them were non-smokers, and 53.1% were non-drinkers, and 55.2% disliked coffee. In smoking level, 16.6% of them smoked less than five pieces a day. In drinking, 18.0% of them drank half a glass of soju. In coffee, 25.3% of them drank a cup of coffee a day. 11. The level of satisfaction with C.V.A. patient-healing methods ; In medical therapy, 43.3% of C.V.A. patients thought it "usual", and 44.1% thought it "satisfactory" and 7.9% thought it "unsatis-factory". In acupunture and moxibustion 39.7% of the C.V.A. patients thought it "usual", and 53.0% thought it satisfactory" and 3.3% thought it "unsatisfactory". The level of satisfaction With Physiotherapy was average 61.7% and 4.0% was "unsatisfactory". From above statement, by considering those characteristics we should develop programs and materials to be health to the prevention and cure of C.V.A. and we should help hospitals and medical personnel families concerned to make use of them.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to construct and test a structural equation model to investigate the risk factors of metabolic syndrome in rural women. METHODS: The raw data in this study was collected from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study supervised by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2005 to 2010. The data included physical examinations and surveys of 1,125 women, who resided in three rural areas of South Korea. The structural model in this study was composed of five latent variables: depression, stress, social support, health behavior, and metabolic syndrome. The structural equation model was used to assess the relationships among the variables. RESULTS: The results of the study showed that depression and stress had direct effects on metabolic syndrome. Social support had a direct effect on health behavior and metabolic syndrome. Also, health behavior had a direct effect on metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSION: This study may serve as a guideline for interventions and strategies used to reduce metabolic syndrome in rural women.

An example of lymphoblastic lymphosarcoma was found in a 7-year-old male brown bear (Ursus arctos) that died after having a 7-month history of depression, anorexia and watery diarrhea. Grossly the mesenteric lymph nodes were enlarged to approximately 4 to 6 times their normal size and histologically diagnosed as lymphoblastic lymphosarcoma. The small intestinal mucosa was corrugated and had severe mural thickening due to infiltrated neoplastic cells. Hepatic metastasis was also noted. This is the first reported case of lymphosarcoma in Ursidae in Korea. As an incidental finding, endogenous lipid pneumonia was noted in the lung.

Mechanical complications of acute myocardial infarction which may lead to heart failure or shock include ruptute of left ventricular free wall, ventricular septum and papillary muscle. The clinical characteristics of these lesions vary conservative management alone has high mortality rate, for which reason surgical repair of these defects are essential. Structural defects including rupture of the left ventricular free wall, ventricular septum, and papillary muscle, accout for 5% to 20% of all deaths from acute myocardial infarction. Among these, ventricular septal defects occur in approximately 1% of all myocardial infarction, and account for up to 2% of deaths subsequent to myocardial infarction. Rupture of the ventricular septum following acute myocardial infarction(AMI) is associated with high mortality rate, as 54% of the patients succumb within two weeks, 87% within two months and 92.5% during the first year. We experienced two cases of postinfarct ventricular septal defects(VSD) which had been repaired within 1 week after AMI due to progressive deterioration of patients` conditions, and were to be reoperated because of repeated septal ruptures in postoperation period and development of cardiogenic shock.

OBJECTIVE: To compare an isotonic lumbar extension exercise program utilizing lumbar extension exercise machines with modified combination program of isotonic lumbar extension exercises, including dynamic stabilization exercise, to improve and maintain trunk stability in the patient with microscopic lumbar discectomy. METHOD: We studied 41 male workers who underwent microscopic lumbar discectomy. Group 1 (n=24) was treated with the isotonic lumbar extension exercise program. Group 2 (n=17) was treated with the modified combination program of dynamic lumbar stabilization exercise and isotonic lumbar extension exercise. The categories that were evaluated and measured were trunk stability, isometric peak torque of lumbar extensor, weight distribution rate of both leg and trunk muscle balance, and Oswestry low back pain (LBP) disability index. RESULTS: After 3 months, group 1 revealed higher isometric peak torque, weight distribution rate of both leg and trunk muscle balance compared with that of group 2. At the end of 6 months, group 2 revealed higher isometric peak torque compared with that of group 1. CONCLUSION: We suggested that combined exercise program, that included the dynamic lumbar stabilization exercise and the isotonic lumbar extension exercise, was a valuable treatment for postoperative lumbar rehabilitation.

Exposure of cells to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation can induce production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS), which damage cellular components. In addition, these agents can stimulate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) and decrease collagen synthesis in human skin cells. In this study, we examined the anti-photoaging effects of extracts of Tetraselmis suecica (W-TS). W-TS showed the strongest scavenging activity against 2,2-difenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and peroxyl radicals, followed by superoxide anions from the xanthine/xanthine oxidase system. We observed that the levels of both intracellular ROS and lipid peroxidation significantly increased in UVB-irradiated human skin fibroblast cells. Furthermore, the activities of enzymatic antioxidants (e.g., superoxide dismutase) and the levels of non-enzymatic antioxidants (e.g., glutathione) significantly decreased in cells. However, W-TS pretreatment, at the maximum tested concentration, significantly decreased intracellular ROS and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and increased superoxide dismutase and glutathione levels in the cells. At this same concentration, W-TS did not show cytotoxicity. Type 1 procollagen and MMP-1 released were quantified using RT-PCR techniques. The results showed that W-TS protected type 1 procollagen against UVB-induced depletion in fibroblast cells in a dose-dependent manner via inhibition of UVB-induced MMP-1. Taken together, the results of the study suggest that W-TS effectively inhibits UVB-induced photoaging in skin fibroblasts by its strong anti-oxidant ability.

Ventricular arrhythmia is known as a major cause of sudden death in patients with heart disease, especially in patients with myocardial infarct. Programmed electrical stimulation (PES) is used in order to identify patients with high risk of ventricular arrhythmia, but it is invasive. So ventricular late potential is studied, which can be performed safely. Ventricular late potential was measured in the 65 normal subjects, 17 patients with in-hospital period acute myocardial infarction and 29 patients with old myocardial infarction using signal-averaged high resolution EKG, Mac-15. The positive criteria of ventricular late potential was one of the following : The duration of TQRS is more than 120 msec, or the amplitude of RMS is less than 25microV, or the duration of LP 40 is more than 40 msec. The results are as follows : 1) Among 65 normal subjects(male ; 33, female ; 32), total QRS duration(TQRS)was 103.9+/-8.3msec(mean S.D), terminal 40msec root mean square amplitude(RMS) 47.8+/-24.3uV and terminal 40msec mean amplitude was 32.5+/-15.4uV. Variables of ventricular late potential showed no significant difference by age. 10 subjects showed positive ventricular late potential. 2) Among 17 patients with in-hospital period myocardial infarction, there was no significant difference in variables of ventricular late potential between patients with ventricular arrhythmia(3 subject) and patients without ventricular arrhythmia(14 subjects). 3) Among 29 subjects with old myocardial infarction, TQRS showed significant differrence between patients with ventricular arrhythmia(3 subjects) and patients without ventricular arrhythmias(26 subjects). All of the patients with ventricular arrhythmia(100%) and 6 subjects(24%) of the patients without ventricular arrhythmia showed positive ventricular late potential, and the difference was significant statistically between groups(p value<0.05). This showed that ventricular late potential is helpful in predicting the risk of ventricular arrhythmia among patients with old myocardial infarction.
